Synopsis

Acting and crossdressing as a boy, Yuki "Yoshiki" Ichihara is viewed as a male by her peers. Despite their expectations, she secretly wants nothing more than to be more feminine. On the other hand, all of Mikako Nagao's classmates believe she is sweet and pure; but in contrast to her innocent veneer, she enjoys selling her body to older men while pretending to be 15 years old. Though it may just be a front, her appearance has enchanted the dashing lady-killer Kaito Aiba, who lusts not for Mikako but to be her. To help fulfill this fantasy, he crossdresses as his idol and takes pleasure in impersonating her in his spare time.

Each of these three college students hides behind an identity that is not their own, masking a self that they cannot reveal. Burdened by their hidden lives, they search for who they are and what defines them as their fates begin to intertwine.

I truly love this manga, so forgive me for any bias. At its core Himegoto is a story about youth, and the methods in which characters aim to achieve and preserve what remains of it which in this story, primarily manifest in the form of their sexual expression and identities. It's extremely dramatic and it does involve a love triangle, though unlike many other stories, the circumstances and dynamic in it is extremely unique and interplays off each other wonderfully.

This manga was honestly the most insane I've read to date, the character motivations are so fucked up, I kept reading because I was so invested and needed to know wtf was going on but I was honestly so frustrated, disgusted and annoyed reading this. So much drama and coercion so if you're not into that I definitely would not recommend, if you like that type of thing this will be right up your alley.

Overall very engaging story with a lot of drama.
Art was good.
Each character was very multifaceted with well built personalities.

I picked this up as I thought it was going to provide a very insightful aspect on gender issues. What I ended up getting was a manga version of Young and the Restless. Convoluted plots, contradicting circumstances, drawn out plots, etc. For instance, one of the biggest points of contention was when Sho (side character) sexually assaulted Yuki (main character). But didn't the main love interests (Mikako and Kaito) also sexually assault Yuki??? So um why is it bad in one case and not the others??? This point alone made it very difficult for me to get into the story but I kept on reading... ...
