Synopsis

Kyoya Ida is a hard-nosed detective from the Shinjuku Police precient. He is known in the force as an unreasonable type who would use lethal force to solve cases, making him unpopular with the enlisted and high-ranking officers in the National Police Agency. Despite this fact, there are some in the force that admire Ida for his bravery and cleverness in using lethal force to solve criminal cases whenever legal means are met in a dead end.

Jiraishin fascinates me. Despite my better judgement I found myself hooked to this often cliched, cheesy, overly-angsty cop thriller. A lot of the mysteries introduced are conveniently wrapped up, and the plot-lines often segue into the laughable, but God dammit, I kept on reading.

For all of it's flaws, Jiraishin never lets up the bleak tone that it establishes from the get-go. Unlike a lot of manga and anime, there are no gags, no tonal shifts--it's always relentlessly dark and woefully depressing. Jiraishin is a journey... to the depths of humanity's depravity. This manga showcases a brutal murder case in each volume.

For each case, Jiraishin dives into the psyche of the killer as Kyoya Iida, the protagonist, inches closer to solving the case. Every killer depicts a different side of humanity, but the author does a pretty good job at showing how they got there. He shows you how they got in the situation they are in and how far they are willing to go.

As for the protagonist, Kyoya is awesome. He's the Batman that everyone really wants. He doesn't bow to policy and isn't ...

Mixed Feelings
Visible, apparent improvement from an artist always leads to a fulfilling experience. People often forget how much one has to truly grow as a creator to create a masterpiece. Experiencing the first works of my favourite storytellers has motivated me to keep writing. While Takahashi Tsutomo isn’t one of my favourites, he has a distinct style and skills. He may not be consistent, but he wrote “Bakuon Rettou”, which shows that he knows what he’s doing.

At one point though, he didn’t. Before “Bakuon Rettou”, “Blue Heaven”, “NeuN”, or anything else, Tsutomo created “Jiraishin”. Honestly, what’s here doesn’t differ from mainstream episodic cop shows like ...
