Kusuo Saiki is not your typical high schooler—behind his glasses, pink hair, and antenna-like appendages exists a being of unfathomable psychic power. Telekinesis, teleportation, and astral projection might sound exciting to the average person, but from Saiki's viewpoint, they are nothing but an annoyance. Psychic powers are unnecessary—this is all that Saiki has believed since he was a kid.
As a secret esper with the sole dream of living an ordinary life, Saiki tries to use his psychic abilities to stay out of the public's gaze. However, having to clean up after his odd classmates and their antics, all the while keeping his psychic powers a secret, makes it rather difficult to achieve the peaceful life he desires.
Ah, Saiki Kusuo... The eternal underrated of Shonen Jump of recent years... So much so it hasn't any review at the time I'm writing this first one, four years after it began serialization in Japan's most known shonen manga magazine. Also keep in mind that since four long years, it has no anime series (the shitty flash ONA doesn't count) while other series like Assassination Classroom or My Hero Academia already have their anime, and there are only 33 translated chapters while there are like 200 chapters currently.
This is a manga focused around a boy named Saiki Kusuo (obviously pun on “saikiku(suo)” (psychic) that has
overwhelming supernatural powers of all kinds. In fact, he claims that he could conquer the world in a jiffy if he pleased.
But Saiki only wants to live a quiet and normal life, as he does everything possible to not stand out.
At first look it won't call your attention since the drawing style and the volume covers are simple to the utmost. So what are its strengths? Well, it's really funny, simply. In every chapter (almost all are autoconclusive) Saiki gets involved in some absurd situations that absurdly bother him, so that he have to get out of them. Despite repeating the same formula the whole time, well, it works. You could even say that becomes even funnier with time. Breaking of the fourth wall and other mangas references are something habitual in this manga. In fact there is a chapter which is a constant breaking of the fourth wall, in which all manga's topics and clichés are mercilessly satirized. Actually the author satirizes lots of stuff, which is one of this manga's strong points. But in my opinion the best thing about this manga is its main character itself. Saiki's rough replies and comments are just so fucking hilarious, seriously.
Also the supporting characters are hilarious, and they are who cause those rough replies almost always. Among them we have, for example:
Nendou Riki, some kind of foolish thug, who is always with Saiki just because he is so stupid so Saiki can't read his mind
Shun Kaidou, a guy who thinks he is the main character of some anime (he has chuunibyou) and imho the funniest one of the supporting cast
Kineshi Hairo, the typical spokon protagonist, you know, like he is always enthusiastic and shit
Saiki's parents, ones of the most stupid characters and also ones of the most hilarious ones.
As I mentioned, the author's drawing style is rather fair. I mean, it's not bad, it's just functional, and it works for a gag manga.
To end with, I recommend you this manga if you like Gintama or One Punch-Man's type of humor. In fact, Saiki Kusuo has many similarities with Gintama. Both have very similar drawing style and humor style. And also both have the same autoconclusive chapters formula. Saiki Kusuo has no serious arcs nor fights, though (at least to date)
Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan, this is the most underrated Manga i ever read in my life. The fact this manga is underrated the English translation isn't finished yet even after whole manga is already end. The series began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on May 14, 2012. The first collected tankōbon volume was published on September 4, 2012, with 25 volumes released as of April 2018. The series ended serialization on February 26, 2018.
I believe this manga has so much potential if you give a chance to read it. Even after Anime come out manga still is underrated, this
is quite the bad thing if you ask me. This manga is simply a art of masterpiece that cannot bore you no matter what. Even after reading all 279 chapters i still want more and i was really happy when i heard this manga getting 4-panel squeal.
This Manga has so much to offer that you’ll wonder why you didn’t read it any earlier. Those of you who haven’t read Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan yet, check out review so you can decide whether or not to read it, although i already know you’ll like it.
Well we guys are not psychic so it's not like you can tell without reading.
Review: (If you want short review only read TL;DR)
Kusuo Saiki is a high school student who was born with all manner of psychic abilities, including telepathy, psychokinesis, teleportation, and more. life with that kind of psychic powers is not as glamorous as anyone would believe. Due to his abilities to read minds for example, he cannot be surprised at a surprise party. It’s also very easy for Saiki to get whatever he wants using his abilities, which makes it impossible for him to be excited about anything at all. His X-ray vision is also make hard for him to tell girls beauty and cuteness in animals.
For this reasons, Saiki attempts to live an ordinary life hiding his powers and trying not to draw too much attention on himself. Obviously, poor Saiki won’t be able to keep a low profile so easily. An endless set of bizarre and unbelievably funny characters join forces to make Saiki’s life the funniest living hell. The story is good and Saiki’s powers are awesome, but what takes the prize are the performances of all those hilarious characters that surround Saiki and the ridiculous situations they put him into. Having psychic powers was never so funny.
Story has really great potential;
Funny supporting characters;
Saiki trying to live normal life;
Also good female heroine(Not really have much of role but she's great);
Really minor flaws in story(Only for some peoples);
The art is not great like Tokyo ghoul and One Punch man. But still good enough to read without any problem. The character and background drawn really well in manga you can't really find much issue in art expect some people who just want to everyone have 'One Punch man' like art.
But let me tell what really is great about every Manga writer art.
In this large format, colorfully illustrated book, a talented artist breaks down process over and over again for the benefit of there readers. While Japanese Manga provides the primary inspiration for all the drawings featured, they also have a flavor unique to the artist and a very western feeling.
The materials they uses for each piece is really piece of art even though every writer don't have art like Murata, Yusuke(One Punch Man artist), still they have the best way of explain there art.
Art is great. I don't have any problem in the art.
Artist simply put good design for manga and the art simply good for this manga.
Little introduction about characters:
Kusuo Saiki: He viewpoint character and narrator of the series, Kusuo Saiki is a high school student who was born with all manner of psychic abilities despite being having very ordinary biological parents. Because of the misery that comes from the attention he receives as a psychic, Kusuo desires a normal, plain life, keeping average grades and performance in sports activities. He uses telepathy to read people's minds, but he can also share telepathy with others.
Now what make him great protagonist, his way of avoiding troubling he still involve with his friend even though he think it just idiocy thing to do. You may think he stone hatred and really don't care about his friends but deep down he think them as friend.
I mean he's not the best shounen protagonist but he's not bad either but not hating type of protagonist.
Kuniharu Saiki: He Kusuo father and also one of the funny character in Manga. Who has to suck up to his employers so much that he has gained a taste for licking shoes. But he really cares about his family and son to much and also deeply in love with her wife.
Kurumi Saik: Kusuo's mother whom he states is "the one who keep him from turning into dark side" because of her kindness, but can be scary when needed that Kusuo won't be able to defy her.
Shun Kaido: A classmate who calls himself "The Jet-Black Wings", thinking he is secretly living as a rebel in a fantasy world ruled by an evil conspiracy organization called Dark Reunion. Although, while still so much attached to his delusional mind, he slowly builds a normal human relationship with his schoolmates despite his chūnibyō antics popping up.
He see Kusuo as his best friend and hangout with him almost every time.
Riki Nendo: Nendo is the only student at PK Academy whose mind Saiki cannot read, simply because he is too much of an idiot. As such, Saiki often fears his overly friendly and carefree nature as he cannot predict his actions. However, Nendo is fond of Saiki and considers him his best buddy.
But Saiki don't really love to hangout with him because he can't read his mind and that's still bothered him.
Kokomi Teruhash: (Spoiler) A self-proclaimed beautiful girl who's really beautiful as angel. She adored by everyone except Saiki. As such, she becomes obsessed with making Saiki react or show admiration, like saying "Oh wow" at her. However, her charisma does not affect guys who strongly love someone else (Saiki's father).
And she start to grow ups really strong feeling for Saiki.
The main character is unique and the one who running the story;
Main heroine is great and lovable;
Side characters like Saiki friends are great and main reason for making the story great;
You can't find any annoying characters;
After taking everything in account i can pretty much tell this manga is absoultely made for shounen lovers and also non Shounen lovers . Story has great way of running characters are funny.
Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan makes fun of absolutely everything and we just love that.
