Synopsis

Imperial Academy is an elite private school whose student body is divided into the ranks of Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Depending on your family's wealth and your individual merit, you can be classified as a Silver or Bronze student. However, there is only one Gold student, and this year that person is Shizumasa Touguu—nicknamed "the Emperor" because he is the Student Council President.

When she was very young, Haine Otomiya fell in love with Shizumasa, after reading the children's picture book that he authored. She had met him twice before attending Imperial Academy, but as a Bronze student, her rank is far below his, so she has been unable to approach him at school.

Haine jumps at an opportunity to get close to Shizumasa, and she unexpectedly becomes his bodyguard as well as a member of the Student Council. It seems like a dream come true for her, but soon she will learn that everyone in the Student Council is hiding secrets, and her own shameful history cannot be forgotten either.

arina tanemura never fails to create a crazy plot! in a sea of samey shoujo romances, shinshi doumei cross is a breath of fresh air. well... not really, it's kind of stressful and a constant roller-coaster of emotions but it's definitely got a unique plot. shoujo romance lovers, please read shinshi doumei cross! you will not be disappointed.

the characters are fun, and there are a lot of them! all of them have a satisfying ending, even the ones with barely any screen time. all of the main characters get conclusive arcs too. my favourite character was Maora-chan <3

I'd put this one at a 7.5/10. My favorite thing about SDC is the somewhat fantastical but still not magical academy setting. Something about Arina Tanemura's detailed art really lended itself to creating that surreal, immersive atmosphere. Very few other shoujo mangaka would be able to achieve this.

The heroine Haine is very standard for Arina, but she is at least a little flawed so I felt she was still somewhat likable. The plot is very heavy on the melodrama and while there were interesting parts, other parts made me roll my eyes. Overall, I guess SDC is more of a guilty pleasure of mine ...

Mixed Feelings
Oh man, this manga. If you like over-dramatized, high school, slide-of-life manga, go right ahead.

-Story-

The plot is so over-dramatic I found it impossible to connect with any of the characters or the story at all. Even the overall plot of nice girl slowly melts the icy heart of popular boy so dull.

So much goes on with this story at such an inflated, ridiculous scale.
