If I could sum up this review in a sentence, it would be "This is a harem manga with monster girls". Monster Musume neither fails to reach this statement, nor does it exceed expectations.

All of the parts needed to create a harem manga are present; a bland MC, a myriad of cute albeit generic girls, and plenty of situations that almost inevitably result in those sugary ecchi moments. Despite this supposed statement of mediocrity, Monster Musume manages to work well with what it has, to the point where I would reccomend it to those who are *really* interested in going past the ever more popular ... anime adaptation.

Story:

The series follows a mostly episodic approach for the beginning of the run at this point, yet it works nicely for what it is. It does not stand out by any mean of the imagination; there are plenty of long, blander arcs in the middle chapters, yet the ecchi is still quite strong in these regards. As such, the story feels more like a skeleton for the meat (get it) of the manga to cling to.

Art:

The artstyle is quite nice, and it serves its function as a vehicle for the ecchi scenes. The designs of each of the characters are solid, and it serves to distinguish them from one another (since it would be way more challenging to tell them apart if they weren't).

Character:

New girls are introduced at a regular rate within the earlier chapters, and they all have some sort of variation in their three sizes, especially those with inhuman bottom halves. They cover most aspects of the generic harem, the clingy one, the naive one, the airhead, and so on. Some of them are interested in somewhat heavier fetishes like BDSM and NTR, although these are often displayed in the manga's gags.

Enjoyment:

I enjoyed it for what it was: an ecchi harem manga. The jokes tend to land, and the ecchi is decent. If anything, this is yet another "comfort food" or "guilty pleasure" manga series, and I enjoyed it in this regard.

Overall:

I think a 7 is where I'll leave it at. If you haven't read this one yet and you're looking for another harem manga to add to the list, give this one a read. There's plenty of content to look into, yet if it doesn't appeal to you, no worries.

I am someone who first watched the anime and then reverted to manga. And the only thing I experienced was pure enjoyment both the times. Even the Chapters I had already watched over in the anime gave the same taste of Enjoyment as they gave off in the anime. This series is truly worth for what it's genre are "Best Harem Development", "Best (Accidental/Or Not) Ecchi stuff", "Best Romance", "Girls", "Comedy at it's Best".
Damn it the Monster Girls have been so well described and their habits too. It almost seems like the real animals. The author has really blended the animal instincts/behaviour pattern, their features, ... powers everything in the girls. My point was that the author really did a lot of research for developing this masterpiece. If you wanna read it just go for it without a second thought.

If you are just reading this to learn how much of the manga that was adapted into the anime I can tell you it was the first 6 books (26 chapters) and there are no major changes between the anime and the books. Now onto the review.

Some might see me giving Monster Musume an overall score of 5/10 as meaning that I think it is a bad manga. This is not the case. To me 5/10 means that is was a fine read but not a manga I would read again and I can't see myself recommending it to a friend.

The art is in my ... opinion the best part of Monster Musume and is responsible for it never becomming a boring read. The bacgrounds never stood out but the characters and their expressions and reactions are well drawn. The girls are espetially beautifully drawn and even though the scenes from time to time becomes very sexual it never becomes vulgar though it does come close a few times. So 8/10

The story (or lack thereof) is my main issue with this manga. For a story to be a story there has to be some form of progression otherwise it is simply a 'setting'. And that is what Monster Musume is, a setting. after the last of the girls have moved in the story ends, anything after that has more or less no lasting influence on the characters or the overall plot of the manga. I like the setting but I would also like a story to come with it. The humor also becomes very repetitive as a result of this. So 2/10

The female main characters of Monster Musume are more rounded persons and less tropes than you see in other ecchi harem mangas. They do however suffer from the lack of story progression which means that there are little to no character growth after the girls introduction arc. If anything the girls become more and more two dimensional as the manga progresses and their most dominant personality trait is the only trait that is shown due to less time dedicated to each character. So 4/10
The male protagonist is a two dimensional character with no defining features. Despite being and adult and having beautiful women throwing themselves at him his main response to the thought of sex is shock and fear. He is the worst part of this manga but I also dislike the 'weak male protagonist' trope. So 1/10

Overall is Monster Musume for you if you don't like to read much and like the setting of horny monster girls living with a man who seams to be afraid of the thought of having sex.
