Synopsis

In Hazama, the world between Heaven and Earth, conceited human souls exist in a state of purgatory. Selfish individuals who cannot see past their own delusions materialize unique "phantoms," which can look like anything from a single school to an entire city. Other unfortunate souls are drawn to lone phantoms and become trapped inside, doomed to be subsumed by the vain soul's ego.

Rock is a soldier in the Black Shooter army and her partner is the serpentine, sentient, and transforming weapon Ron. Their mission is to infiltrate phantoms and reclaim the souls at their sources, bringing them to a place where they can be purified and ultimately ascend to Heaven. However, the duo's efforts are hindered by the enigmatic Dead, another Black Shooter, who disdains helping sinners achieve salvation—instead, she consumes souls, destroying them.

Background

Black★Rock Shooter: Innocent Soul was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace magazine between July 2011 and June 2012. Concurrently, it was collected into three volumes and published between November 2011 and June 2012.

Black★Rock Shooter started out as an original character posted online by illustrator Ryohei Fuke, depicted as a black-haired girl with one burning blue eye and a powerful cannon on her arm. Inspired, Ryo of the Japanese pop band Supercell created a song based on the character using the popular Vocaloid software. The two collaborated on a music video to accompany the song, which was subsequently posted online, garnering many views.

The overall setting can feel a bit trite, as there are plenty of stories out there about afterlife stuff and between-heaven-and-hell environments. But, that doesn't diminish this hat in the ring in any way.
At first, the chapters feel like they're pretty one-off bits, with new chapters having new villains and new mental prisons to explore. These get tied together into a single narrative as the nature of the world is revealed, as well ...
