Here is my take after reading all 58 chapters of Aku no Hana by Shuuzou Oshimi.
There are times when you accidentally stumble upon diamonds in this world, and I don't believe in accidents.
It is difficult to put the experience of reading Aku no Hana in words but I would try my best to do so.
The story revolves around Takao Kasuga, a middle schooler, and his beliefs, principles, dreams, and aspirations; how they were formed through his love for Les Fleurs du mal by Charles Baudelaire, crushed by the perverted Sawa Nakamura and reassembled by Nanako Saeki just to be crushed once more

"Because no matter where I go, I wont be able to disappear."
Aku no Hana was in simple words, a beautifully illustrated and well written coming of age manga that sheds a bright light on the lives of outcasts and the harsh reality of coming in terms with the world. This story was amazingly written and had me constantly biting at my nails in anxiousness. It was not only an extremely good page-turner it is a manga that I will most definitely not forget. Story: 43% / 43% The story delves deep into the lives of small towns in Japan and how they feels stuck and crushed by ... Feb 3, 2020
Story - 10
Strange, uncomfortable, realistic and bizarre. These words define the story of Aku no Hana. It's super well written. Art - 9 The art at the beginning is normal, but when the story starts to mesh it starts to get stranger and more characteristic, with beautiful and bizarre paintings. It's beautiful. Character - 10 ... Jan 24, 2022
First of all, this manga is not for everyone! the plot unfolds slowly and the characters may not seem relatable to most people.
Story 8/10 Aku no Hana is nothing original and this setting was done few times before but its unique to the point that its worth reading (at least for me). This story is split up into two parts with the first half covering Kasuga's life in middle school and his forced "love life" with his classmate, story itself develops in very slow and heavy segments which takes its time to set up the mood which may turn off some readers or make them drop ... First watched the anime and liked Nakamura even with those so called horrible drawings. Though it was not enough to watch the anime and started to the manga as well and finished it all at one sitting. I liked Nakamura with manga drawings even more. I believe I fell in love with Nakamura which didn't happen this intensely with any other manga/anime character.
Stealing clothes of a girl may not be a much righteous thing but it isn't that bad to be honest. Kasuga did really see Saeki as a goddess. He must have thought he was betraying her innocence and degrading her after he performed ... Aug 13, 2018 I confess that when I started reading Aku on Hana, I imagined that this would be one of the best manga of all time. I had it in my mind until I realized the psychomania of the female protagonist. Aku no Hana disappointed me in many moments. When I began to understand the story, soon after it began to look strange or even incomprehensible. From beginning to end I did not understand the story, even before the separation of the two protagonists. Secondaries are not even talked about. Completely erased and when they appear it is at some point sad or unhappy compared to a ... Mar 8, 2021
I read it all in the span of about 3 hours. And in those 3 hours, I felt completely absorbed in the story. I love it. It stars a protagonist that is stupid and hateable but also reminds me of my younger self. He is conceited because he counts himself as an intellectual because he reads difficult books, even if he does not understand the books he reads. A hypocrite, a contradiction, and as he said so himself, someone hollow. He does not have a personality aside from reading his books, being the stereotypical bookworm is what he has become. However, he is human,

Charles Baudelaire "Les Fleurs du mal" (The Flowers of Evil) basically explores the Spleen; A term used in the 19th century to describe melancholy, profound boredom and overall dissatisfaction, that is often originated from the tragedy of life. The book talks about how Baudelaire descends more and more into the pleasures of hell in an attempt to find something that fulfills him, with the book ending in the conclusion that death is the only unknown thing left to discover, and what the poet ends up wishing for.
Aku no Hana, directly inspired by "Les Fleurs du mal", takes the whole "Spleen" thing and tries to ... Feb 15, 2023
Shuzo Oshimi’s “The Flower of Evil” is a Manga that can be compared to watching a horrific accident taking place in front of your eyes. You want to avert your eyes from the destruction, but you just can’t stop looking at it.
Aku no Hana is about two kids who, having gotten sick from the mundanity of life, allow their perversion to consume them. (Okay, it’s a bit more complicated than that but I lack the brain cells to dissect their motivations.) The first half of this Manga is probably the most unsettling reading experience I have had. It was deeply uncomfortable and made me feel ... Dec 28, 2022
From the storytelling to its pacing, to the way it blends the theme of depression with philosophy, literature and a little bit of romance on top of wise usage of symbolism, Aku no Hana was both a tiring and a wonderful experience for me. I would like to go into more details of all of them, but I haven't been able to get over the tiredness of just finishing Aku no Hana yet, still I wanted to write this review when my memories are fresh. I'm not saying tiredness as a bad trait. I just held my breath and went with it all the way

This might initially seems like the type of dirty "horrible things happening to horrible people" story, but I assure you that it's way more than that. Flowers of Evil is a story full of unexpected twists and turns, one that packed plenty of real life insight and eventually proved to have a considerable amount of compassion toward its complex characters.
The plot started by highlighting the relationship between snobbish and spineless middle-schooler Takao Kasuga and his enigmatic classmate Sawa Nakamura. Saying Sawa is odd would be a major understatement; she's a complete alien of a teenager, showing extreme disregard toward the most basic norms ... Jul 30, 2022

This review will be written in English and Portuguese ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Aku no Hana é sobre a aceitação do inevitável, estoicismo e também das frescuras adolescentes. Your past is something that you cannot change.Trying to run away from it and it will hunt you down.
That's probably one of the many topics this series has to offer and it's really interesting to say the least . This is probably symbolised by the huge eye flower . Which is openned when something of the past appears and haunts the protagonist. Another topic that the series brings up ,is the fact that young people tend to easily be influenced by individuals that appear to them as different and special. That leads on doing terrible things that they will regret while growing. Also it shows the feeling of a ... Feb 18, 2024
Well this manga takes the cake - the epitome of making a mountain out of a molehill. The supposed coming-of-age story with depth somehow ended up being an obnoxious case of bipolar teens suffering from Stockholm syndrome.
Every character in Aku no Hana is unlikable and unrelatable. Aside from the fact that it’s difficult to wrap my head around why stealing gym clothes can turn into such a fiasco, but how does a middle school kid get bullied into succumbing to his fellow classmate and eventually developing an attachment to the said abuser is the main problem. There’s no clear/convincing explanation to Nakamura’s behavior either, ... Jul 8, 2014
This is a really great manga. And one of the scariest too. I don't know what it is so scary about it. It is just that so many events that happen in the story carry so much consequences that make it scary. I had to take a break from it sometimes it was so intense.
Characters like Nakamura are just so unexplained until the last few chapters. It is so interesting on how a Nakamura can manipulate Kasuga to do so many shameful acts. It is also interesting to see the main character breakdown as his secrets are revealed one by one to Saeki. The most ... Nov 2, 2023
Guys, guys, if you do not know what a masterpiece entails, this is it: a MASTERPIECE!
This manga is one of the best examples of character growth I've seen in a long time. From the fleshed out settings, and moral ambiguity of each major character the in Act 1, to the multi-faceted development of the main character in act 2. If you want to see a manga where the major characters change drastically throughout the entire manga: If you want to see a manga where each major character embodies major themes that is relatable in a real life setting: If you want to see a manga with one ... Senselessness and being left in limbo were two things this coming-of-age manga gave me. Definitely one of the few mangas out there that would be worth your time, don't drop after reading 4-5 chapters. I have seen some of my friends do that and it was sad because I felt they had missed out on good stuff.
So many things happened in just a few hours of reading this. I saw some people being disappointed in how this manga ended, but I think it was the most satisfying ending I had ever seen. The flower thing is very significant to the story and eerily depicts ... Jan 3, 2022
a pretty good short read, although it does feel a little stretched out towards the end.
this type of story tends to crop up a lot in teen media and this really is more or less just the same thing. can't really complain about a whole lot. it is a serviceable story and i do think it'd make for a good week-end read or even a couple of hours. and while this doesn't have much to do with anything, the final chapter is definitely the most interesting. if i were to have my gripes, they'd be centered around the lack of chaotic events. yes, there were a ... The unusual stature where the common manga gets uncommon to read is found in this story where all is centered around a book by a crazy French poet.
Story: The story was psychologically thrilling, i don't think many mangas offer the reverse situation where a boy got bullied by a girl in such a "unique"way. What's mysterious about the whole franchise is that, you get lost trying to understand the character mentality. There were some worthwhile plot twists, and you could exactly feel the aftermaths the of people who had gone through various dangerous phases in life. Art: Art is very good, it was detailed on ... Jan 29, 2021
I'll try to keep my review brief as I think other reviewers have done this manga quite some justice already.
Aku no Hana is a story of 3 children (Kasuga Takao, Nakamura Sawa and Saeki Nanako) who struggle through puberty and later their teenage years, trying to find meaning in life. Takao doesn't have any sense of self-worth and tries to fill the void in his heart with literature. Sawa is tragically afraid of boredom and loathes normalcy to the point of being violent and rude to others. Saeki craves acceptance and is unsatisfied with the grayness of her everyday life, which she spends adhering to ... |
