We have our protagonist who came home one day after first grade to see his parents and infant sister slaughtered on the living room floor. From that day on wards he didn't speak a word. He could not.
Now he lives with his dementia suffering grandmother, barely going by. As a silent stress relieve his entire class tells him all they want to get out of their system and he can do nothing but stare at his desk. And as classes go by and he puts all his own frustration into the eraser before him, you could swear it

She indeed is not human and is shown to lay among tens of injured, bandaged and possibly dead bodies as air raid bombs rain down. This was 50 so years ago yet here she stands and looks for a "partner".
And then she finds him. A still young boy that she immediately chooses, drags into an allay and has sex with. The act of it makes him let out the first words he said in one decay, in sync with his ejaculation. To him she is nothing but a pervert who just used him. But the thought of the woman don't leave him. So strong is his attraction to her that he lost all carefulness as his grandma comes into his room, boy penis in hand, and asks who this Maria is.
Back at school the neglectful teacher asks a question in class, directing our lead to answer. All kids start laughing "Did you forget? He is a mute." Full of fear from what people will do to him, as he knows their darkest secrets, he keeps it quite. He answers.
