This book delivers exactly what it advertises. When I read the synopsis, I could tell that there was no way that they could mess up. A story about a witch's journey to collect tears of joy just screams drama and sends your mind racing when you think about all the potential situations that might come up. If you read the synopsis and become even slightly interested, you surely won't be disappointed.
I believe the book is the better medium for the series so far, as it allows the author to use a pacing unique to this medium, that an anime or manga can't quite reach. When

emotionally charged scenes are being set up or playing out, reading allows the buildup to reach critical mass by taking its time, as opposed to the anime version that has to cram everything within a 20 minute episode. I've had to stop to get tissues on multiple occasions during my read because the way the events and monologues are presented, but the anime version fell flat for me multiple times. Each chapter has been its own subplot, and once the subplot presents itself, they are rather predictable, but the written work still manages to make them hit hard, so I give it a pass.
There are supposed to be comedic bits sprinkled in here and there, and while I found myself exhaling through my nose a couple of times, most of them were not memorable or "laugh out loud" level. I think they are just there to keep the overall tone of the story light hearted, which isn't a bad thing. You can't have an enjoyable, dramatic story if the entire story is only sad, 100% of the time.
Overall, definitely worth your time .
