The idea behind this manga is REALLY solid. A guy obsessed with the idea of magic gets reincarnated into a world where it's thought to be absent, and slowly over the course of years learns to create and wield it. That's a very strong premise, and one that you don't really see done much.
And the scenes of experimentation and working out how magic works is really strong, you are completely sold on the fantasy of his experiments and him combining new and old knowledge to create the basic theories. There's exceptionally well done scenes of his relatives reactions to it, and especially well done is
...
his sisters reactions as she works through all her various emotions.
However what ultimately let's things down is three things.
Firstly the fact they're kids, I get this is critical for the story being told but at the same time they emote like children as well and that can get grating.
Secondly, the final timejump to him being much more competent sorta ruins the flow, and again I understand why they did this, but I would have prefered to see his first few steps into becoming competent and THEN the timejump.
Lastly the reveal of what he is. It sorta cheapens all his hard work to reveal that, his progress was more impactful when he was just a normal person being reincarnated into a normal kid, and the fact that the signifier of the heritage is colour, but it's a black and white manga so you never really see it beyond the covers, is also just annoying since it comes out of nowhere.
Ultimately though none of this really matters. The manga has been discontinued and has not shown any indication of being continued. An anime series came out in early 2025, and the light novel continues the story, but for those manga lovers out there this is a short, sweet, and ultimately satisfying story.
