Synopsis

The sole thing that gets the middle-aged Sasaki through his soul-sucking job is a cheerful smile from Yamada—the young woman who works at a nearby 24-hour supermarket he frequents. After every tiring day of getting berated by his boss, Sasaki stops by the store to have his spirit healed by his favorite cashier.

After a particularly grueling day, Sasaki shows up at the supermarket, only to find that Yamada's shift has already ended. Disappointed, he searches for a place to smoke when a woman from behind the store calls him over to join her. The bold and dangerously playful Tayama is quick to call out Sasaki's peculiar habit of always seeking out her coworker—even going as far as telling Yamada about Sasaki's vested interest in her.

Now, in addition to seeing his adored cashier Yamada, Sasaki also visits the store to see if his new smoking partner Tayama is around. But there is more to Tayama's mischievousness than she initially lets on. With every cigarette, an unlikely friendship begins to blossom.

Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari began as a web manga released on the author's Twitter account on March 9, 2022, and published in print by Square Enix since August 25, 2022. It won first place in the 2022 Next Manga Awards in the web manga category.

The series has been published digitally in English as Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You by Square Enix through Manga UP! and through Comikey since May 23, 2023. The volumes have been published by Square Enix since February 20, 2024.

This manga is a feeling. One of the best romance manga I've ever read in my life, I've read several, I've seen several too, but the chemistry between these two is indescribable. I literally have an emotional attachment to the characters, they are all VERY well written and developed. The author is extremely talented and delicate, the monologues are incredible.
One of the things that captivates me most about the story is that everyone is "real" and lives normal lives. And that's perfect!!! This story makes the ordinary incredible!!! A natural love story, everything happens slowly and in the time it should be.

A very pleasant and fun slice of life manga. This manga is about an 45yr man Sasaki who works in a company and after his day's work, he goes to a supermarket to buy things where the cashier, Yamada, whose cute and bright smile makes his day worth it.

Basically its not lust nor something romantic, but Sasaki admires Yamada just like anyone admire his favourite actor or artist. Later Sasaki encounters a person named Tayama, who also works in the same supermarket. He shares a smoke with her everytime after coming from work, unaware of the fact that she herself is Yamada.

The best slow burn slice of life and romance series excel with engaging characters, relatable moments, and interesting dialogue, often accompanied with solid comedy. But in Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, none of that exists. The personalities in here are incredibly flat, the conversations are dull, and the chemistry between the characters is one-note.

A big reason why is because Sasaki doesn’t realize that Yamada and Tayama are the same person (does he have working eyes?), which leads to repetitive jokes centered around Yamada teasing Sasaki and him getting embarrassed.
