Synopsis

Accepting only the comfort of her headphones, high school student Hikaru Takabe spends her time isolated from her classmates. However, her life takes a new turn when she meets a powerful intergalactic being named Horizon. As a result of the surreal incident leading to their encounter, Horizon must stay within Hikaru's body, much to her chagrin.

Now armed with Horizon's powers of spatial manipulation, Hikaru is dragged into the mission that brought it to Earth: to destroy Maelstrom, a lifeform whose instinctive purpose is to kill every living being on whatever planet it finds itself on. For Hikaru, this not only involves partaking in an evolutionary game of cat and mouse, but also taking the first steps out of her shell.

If you've read any of my reviews, you know that I put a lot of stock into story concepts. The concept of immortality, reincarnation, lucid dreams, and basically any concepts that I, as a reader, find interesting. The concept this time is evolution, and boy did they mess this one up.

We'll start with characters, because they were almost as disappointing as the story itself. All in all we have three main characters, and a handful of side characters. Some characters develop(not all), but they do so very artificially. We don't see the development slowly happening over time, or through actions. Instead, the characters that develop ...

7 Billion Needles had a promising start, and I was genuinely interested in the story. Unfortunately, the only good thing about this manga is the artstyle, which looks really nice.
The best way to describe this nonsense of a story is, an ambitious piece of work that looks super cool when you first read the premise, but turns out to be just another trainwreck filled with plot conveniences everywhere. It’s smothered with philosophical nonsense that really makes everything feel artificial and overdone.
The characters are just as disappointing and bland. Hikaru is one of the most boring, uninteresting protagonists I’ve ever come across, and it’s ...

Overall it feels like I was seeing a highlight reel of a much larger work than this actually is. It insists upon itself with no foundation built. What it feels like is somewhere very early on part-way through making volume 3 the mangaka got a call that went something like "hey by the way you're only getting 4 volumes lol" and decided to stop and tack on the ending they actually had planned for like at least 2 or maybe 3 or 4 more volumes down the line. the sense of scale is just ballooned at a rate disproportionate for even such a fantastical story.

I ...
