For a decade I find many people have said that "Rave Master" is the ้hidden gem and a better story written from Mashima compared to "Fairy tail" which kinda intrigued me lately with the pandemic situation , so I decided to read it eventually.
Honestly, I wish I liked the series more than I do. Aspects of it, and a few entire arcs, are great enough that I want the whole thing to be a masterpiece. But as it stands, there's just too many things I dislike about the series for me to pursue it any further.
The story is the definition of "cliché" , except

I remembered reading the first couple of volumes of Groove Adventure Rave after the botched dub aired on Toonami back in my years as a teenager. Unfortunately, being a teenager with minimal funds I was only able to afford so many volumes and stopped reading after those few volumes. I also remember many of the series' loyal fans voicing their STRONG displeasure with the anime adaptation and so I decided to recently revisit the entire series this summer.
The first few volumes very much reminded me of why I felt this series had promise with likeable main characters, interesting settings, and only a few of the ... Jul 23, 2019
Hiro Mashima had already fully realized his ideal shonen in his debut manga, Rave Master. Although I was never fond of Mashima’s brand of shonen, I gained newfound appreciation of his style through Rave. What made this manga distinct from other generic shonen is the emphasis and love for friendship. This, first and foremost, is the defining characteristic of Mashima’s stories. And like any other Mashima work, this essential feature is both a strength and a flaw. His obsession in friendship gets in the way of meaningful character writing and consequential conflict. The characters never go beyond their archetypal models. It fails to sell big

I thought this was good in elementary school, but I'm not in elementary school now so I don't know what to think. It's a fun read if you have the power to go back in time when you were much more simple minded and far less critical. Cool shit happens and you're happy about it. But now that you have developed better taste for the media you consume, it is probably trash compared to your current favorites. I also don't really remember anything other than that weird dog, so this review probably isn't very helpful. If you're in elementary school, you should read this.

This is my first review, updated from when I read only 216 chapters of it.
The story of Rave Master, up until chapter 240 or so, is not that special. Haru Glory, the main character, has to save the world from Demon Card (DC) by collecting all the rave stones and defeating them. Without getting into story details, there are several interesting plot twists near the end, but aside from that, the story moves very straightforward in a somewhat boring way. All the villains, and I mean every single one of them, are unlikeable. They all want to destroy the world for pointless reasons, with an ... Jul 27, 2020
Rave from the author of Fairy Tail is a regular battle shonen story. It is the story of Discount Natsu becoming the Rave Master and has to find the rave stones to unlock his full potential. However the stones were scattered due to an explosion 50 years ago. Now Discount Natsu must journey the world to find these stone in hopes to find these magic stones. Along the journey he will gain many friends and allies including discount Lucy who has lost her memory and her plot point is totally not related to the rave at all, totally. There is however an anti rave organization.

This review is written by someone who, while is a big Mashima fan, has only read the first volume.
Why? Because the first volume is what sells me on the manga, its style, its world and its ideas; the first volume of Rave did none of that. Bought this on a whim because I really like the author's other works (Fairy Tail, Edens Zero, Dead Rock). It's his first serialized series and it shows: most of the themes and ideas he explored and uses in other of his series are present, but in a very crude state; the art doesn't help, being quite similar to One Piece and ... |
