Although I wasn't expecting much and was even a bit wary due to the combination high school girls+erotica, I'm happy to have found a hidden gem with actual depth in characters, story and message, as well as both restraint and taste in the depiction of the erotic scenes. Even if the beginning can feel a bit weird, the development of the story is well worth the read.

In order to better understand this story, it helps to know a bit about some social issues in Japan. The relevant one here is the problem with JK (high school girls) and the way some of them get involved ... in the "entertainment industry". It doesn't necessarily mean sexual services, but it's rarely something nice nonetheless (think escort, compensated dating…)

The story starts with a popular girl called Marika that clearly craves the attention. She is looking for ways to make a quick buck to buy a new fashionable accessory. She hears that working as a teenage escort could net her 10,000 yens a day (the amount is important here), and she's ready to put up with sexual harassment for it, even though she just went through that in a previous part-time job.

During a conversation with her friends, Marika loudly claims that love between girls is impossible and that only desperate girls would go for something like that.

But, the same day, she's approached by another girl from her class, Aya. Aya produces an envelope containing a thick stack of bills: enough to pay 10,000 yens a day (remember that amount?) for 100 days. She's ready to give it to Marika under one condition: that she would give Aya 100 days to convince her that love between girls is possible and even acceptable. This effectively discourages Marika from looking for work as an escort.

Aya explains that she's lesbian (a fact that she doesn't advertize at school), hence her reaction to Marika's loud earlier claim. What follows is Aya's grand plan to show Marika what love between girls is about.

At first, and many times afterwards, the interactions between Aya and Marika do not involve sex at all, so don't expect fan service in every chapter. Aya first of all wants to open Marika's mind about girls' love. They have discussions where they confront ideas and opinions, both girls are shown to be intelligent, if stubborn, and Aya doesn't have the last word every time. Marika goes to places she didn't know about, meets people and hears their stories. The social commentary is sane and well-thought, without being overbearing or patronizing. And yes, gradually over several weeks, Aya shows Marika the physical aspects of such a relationship, hence the Erotica tag for this manga.

Without spoiling anything, remember that everything is told from Marika's point of view. Clues are here and there to be found, that Marika is an *unreliable narrator*: what she sees, how she describes it, is biaised by her preconceptions (and she has quite a lot of those at first, and not only about homosexuality). So there'll be a point in the story where you might want to re-read the first book and scrutinize Aya's behavior with new eyes.

Honestly, I found the start of those "100 days" a bit disturbing, but I urge anyone feeling that way with the first volume to push through. Already in the second volume, a lot more is shown about the protagonists' personalities and backgrounds, and everything starts to make sense in retrospect — why Aya behaves like she does, why Marika puts up with it. Also it helps to accept the fact that teenagers can be awkward when it comes to sentimental relationships and sex. Both girls were on a slippery slope, for different reasons, and the story shows both of them trying to change for the better.

Also, I found the graphic style gorgeous (with a few exceptions here and there, probably a rushed deadline). Both Marika and Aya are beautifully drawn, with a lot of care given to postures and expressions. In normal everyday interactions the artist had fun dressing them in a variety of clothes, while giving each girl her own style. Intimate moments are almost always tastefully depicted (except at the very beginning, but it's part of the story), showing both passion and tenderness with a good eye for framing the scene.

Arioto is a poorly written, fetishistic story about a lesbian trying to turn a "straight" girl gay under the pretense of a ¥1,000,000 challenge.

This initial pretense of their relationship serves primarily as an excuse for one high school girl, the issuer of the challenge, to push the other's boundaries far beyond any reasonable level. Screams of "no" and "please stop" serve as little more than fluff to be disregarded in service of the author's clear rape fantasies. It's impossible to overstate the harm perpetuated by the 16 year old protagonist's boundaries being consistently disregarded under the guise of "she actually wants it though."
