The manga adaptation of Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Big Bang Mission!!! is the definitive experience of the Big Bang Mission arc.
Unlike the anime it doesn't rush to the next big thing and has more reasonable dialogue and the fights are better paced.
Art is becoming more and more like original Dragon Ball especially in action scenes. The author rarely relies on homages regarding to move execution and lot's of unique panels get drawn you wouldn't see in Dragon Ball manga nor Dragon Ball Super.
Story is a sequel to Super Dragon Ball Heroes Universe Mission and continues with Fu's next experiment. This time he wants to make
...
his own universe using the energy of the other 12 Universes. It's up to Goku and Vegeta to team up with the Time Patrollers to stop Fuu.
As you would expect in Heroes and timelines being messed up, you will see a lot of old enemies getting involved who got massive power ups through the time rift, Evil Saiyan Aura, Dark Dragon Ball etc. Like it is insane how powerful some of these enemies are. As this is a video game adaption, power scaling can go out the window sometimes (kinda like in Dragon Ball Super) but it is at least excused somewhat. Stupid things like random old antagonist or villain appears out of nowhere to attack.
Compared to the anime, there is actual good dialogue between characters. For example in the anime version Frieza and Cooler didn't speak with each other, but in this manga we see them actually interact mid fight.
Some characters get interesting character development and while not necessary changing sides, they learn from their loses.
The Crimson Masked Saiyan is also an old enemy who moved through time to reach the panicle of his power.
Some characters get new forms exclusive to Heroes and one of them being Vegeta who gets a better treatment in this video game promotional manga and gets treated with far more respect than Dragon Ball Super would ever do.
Hearts is still the best character. We see him how he works as an ally. His abilities not only allow him to predict movement, but also roast the shit out of his enemies or know how to motivate allies.
Power ups in Heroes are so-so. But when it comes to impact or leaving an impression they do a good job.
Regarding fan service, this time we have:
- Frieza and Cooler team up
- New transformation
- Vegeta getting a W against someone worthwhile
- Super Saiyan Blue Goku vs Bills God of Destruction
- another father-son kamehameha?
- More Gogeta and Vegetto
amounts other things
Criticism, some of the fights will fall short because of limited promotion. But the most important ones are done well. There was one fight that didn't really need to exist because it involved characters nobody really cares about.
Overall the manga of Heroes is good. The action is good and the importance of where to place fan service is usually really good done. The characters have more interactions and feel like real people unlike in the anime usually.
It also sets up well for the next manga Ultra God Mission. It's definitively worth a read.
