Synopsis

Year 25 of the Showa era (1950). In the late summer, a young man, Raichi Shiozawa, visits the village of Mishirushi, where old superstitions and folklore still remain. The purpose of his visit is to tutor Matsurika Mishirushi, the daughter of a prominent village family. However, Matsurika is not an ordinary human; she is a monster that eats human flesh. Why this beautiful and graceful girl has turned into a monster? Because of an illness? A curse? Afterward, eight girls disappears all of a sudden. What's the truth behind the disappearance?

This is definitely one of R07's stranger novels. He really leant into the gore aspect pretty hard in this one, so if you don't like that, I would probably steer clear. Other than that though, I found that this novel explored some really interesting topics in R07's typical kind, but down-to-earth way. Overall, the writing is much less clear than in some of his previous novels, so I would say this is generally a weaker work of his, but it's clear it was somewhat experimental and overall still very enjoyable and thought-provoking.
