Ah, high school. Is there any better place to start fresh after a horrible middle school relationship? Nope! Not unless your ex ends up at the same school as you and is now your stepsibling. What was supposed to be a sanctuary of peace where I could avoid ever seeing her again has become a living nightmare! Everywhere I look, I see her—in my house, in my school, in my class. There's no escape! She even claims that she's the older sibling. Like hell she is! But I won't lose to her. After all, I'm the older brother in this new family situation. That's right, we're family now. No matter how much we may have thought we loved each other before, we saw one another's true colors and realized we weren't meant for each other. That's why even though we may keep up a buddy-buddy sibling act for the sake of our parents, things will never go back to the way they used to be.

Easily the best LN I have ever read. Watching the anime made me curious about how the relationship between the main two characters progressed.

The author does a great job of jumping between different character's perspectives throughout the story. I think that this makes the story more enjoyable since the author can decide the best perspective for us to see certain situations through.

For example - If one character is confessing to another, the author can decide for us to be experiencing this from the perspective of the character confessing or from the one being confessed to. Maybe the first half of the situation is told ...

Probably one of the best LN's I've read but at the same time one of the absolute worst ones I've also read. Even though I put it in the overall positive score I have some very mixed feelings about and it's largely due to volumes 8 and portions of volume 9 where I just feel the series spins its wheel and doesn't go very far but thankfully for the most part volume 9 manages to course correct from 8.

Story: Pretty straight forward for the most part which is perfectly ok. Mizuto and Yume dated for a period in middle school but due to ... miscommunication and just being immature kids at the time they break it off but it's clear they still have linger regrets and attachments. Story largely focuses on these feelings but throw in their friends issues to help expand everything. There's tense moments where you think things might be patching up but also moments where it feels like it could fall apart again.

Characters: Most of them are solid characters and some of the side characters don't get as much growth in character as Yume and Mizuto the more recent volumes have taken an effort to build them up too. There are some problem characters I feel don't add to the story meaningfully but I'll put that down in the spoiler section.

Non spoiler final thoughts: 1-6 good reads, 7 starts to get pretty shaky, 8 full on wreck, 9 starts to fix things.

Volumes 1 - 6 totally fine as we have a narrow list of characters to work with in terms of their POV and makes for great reading.
Volume 7 is when problems start to arise the introduction of the student council since Yume joins it as she wants to step out of her comfort zone. We now have a larger cast of characters who aren't really all that interesting. This volume is about the sport festival and organizing it. The other real issue is in this volume Higashira is clearly being teased as a rival for Yume and it just feels flat and forced. The biggest issue is I've always felt Higashira just exists and her one thing she has going is her trying to seduce mizuto with her body that's it. Mizuto says he's comfortable around her and yeah its written that way but there's zero chemistry going on.
Volume 8 - This volume, why does it exist? It's literally student council the volume. The gang barely has any presence in this volume. It's just a volume about the student council members trying to hook up with the ones they like on a trip to Kobe. I was fully expecting some big things between Mizuto and Yume...nothing cause they barely exist in this volume. At least Kawanami and Akatsuki characters moved forward a bit.
Volume 9 - Starts off with Yume in her POV being a background character and just listening to the student council who we're supposed to care about talk but we don't care about them. It also has one of the cringiest sections too too in v3 even if it was foreshadowing for what Yume would try in that chapter. Overall went back to being a pretty good volume compared to 8.

Final Thoughts:
V8 nearly killed any desire to keep reading this and I even took a month off from doing so. The student council is the worst addition to the series by far and needs to be phased out or their involvement in the story kept to a bare minimum and no we don't need a massive section where one of them explains how she was raw dogged by her bf and how screamed it hurt so much(yes that was a not small chunk of a chapter where this happens). Hopefully moving forward with how volume 9 turns out the author goes in on Higashira being a talented artist and moves away from the reoccurring "want to touch my tits" schtick she had going and that was it.

Like many people, I was intrigued by the premise having seen an ad for the anime on Youtube, and wound up reading the manga followed by all eight (8) volumes of the Light Novel (thanks Hellping) because I grew invested in the story.

If I was to sum up the pith of the narrative, it is about two people finding their place with each other as sibilings / potential lovers, despite carrying the baggage of having broken up with each other some two weeks before the main narrative begins. The key questions are: what does it mean to be a lover, where does the line ... between former lovers / family get blurred, and the inbetween.

I will admit, while I was initially thrilled by the direction taken by the author for the first 6 - 7 volumes, I slowly came to realise what a train-wreck of a story it started to grow into by the final and most recent volume (8).

Being primarily a romance story, I will focus on that aspect in this review to see if it holds water as a "romance" story.

In terms of the romance between the titular main couple,

my humble opinion is that the author has either totally lost the plot, or has decided, rather disingenuously, to string readers along with a patently meaningless love triangle, particularly WRT Isana, whom the author has expressly said in various of his afterwords for the earlier volumes, that she wasn't even in the race to begin with.

Having read all of the author's afterwords in from Vol. 1 - 7, and then finally reading Volume 8, I cannot help but feel that the author has totally betrayed his characterisation of the Mizuto in a complete volte face by causing him to suddenly develop feelings for Isana, when at least up to to the end of Vol 7, Mizuto states in no uncertain terms that he is interested / loves Yume.

I can appreciate that "love" is a complex things. Sometimes "side-baes" or love triangles in anime / manga / LNs receive characterisation so that they are not built as flat characters. And to that end, it is true that Mizuto condoning Isana's flirtations towards him ARE the source of his own destruction / the destruction of the Mizuto / Yume ship... but what I cannot accept is that the author has simply written Mizuto as a character that repeats again and again that he has no feelings for Isana, and that he has eyes only for Yume, and yet that catastrophe that was Vol. 8 could happen.

This coupled by the fact that the author's afterwords from Vol. 6 onwards seem to imply (to me at least) that he is extending the story for the sake of it. Money? Unclear... but this feels like a sus callback to what is happening with feaking Oregairu and its money-eyed author.

Call it "realistic" writing, but I feel cheated. [/spoiler]
