Chihayafuru and Kono Oto Tomare! each involve a club for a niche Japanese competitive activity/sport. There is a similar feel to the storytelling revolving around the clubs for karuta (traditional Japanese card game) and the koto (traditional Japanese stringed instrument). The clubs in both have male and female members, with friendship and teamwork playing a big part as they strive together to improve and hope to reach the nationals. In Chihayafuru, Chihaya decides to become the Queen of karuta (top female karuta player), after witnessing her friend's passion for the game. Similarly in Kono Oto Tomare!, Chika finds out he wants  read more

at first they don't have much passion for the game, but after a while, they come to love it.

Both mangas give off the same heart-warming feeling when you read them. They also have similar characters, like Arata and Rei. They both were considered a child prodigy in a japanese competitional game, in Arata's case, karuta, in Rei's case, shogi. They both become professional players at a young age. They are also marked by the loss of a close relative. If you enjoyed Chihayafuru you will more than certainly enjoy 3 Gatsu no Lion as well.

both have a main girl with two guys around her and the way their passion for the sport is really transmitted to the reader is similar
reportRecommended by Shiharu
Both start with spunky elementary kids that don't really have their own dream for the future. That all changes when they meet another kid that excels at some subject (piano in Piano no Mori; Karuta in Chihayafuru) which inspires the main character to adopt this subject and get a dream. Both start when the kids are in elementary and skip to when they are in high school. Chihayafuru is more of a romance and its based on a girl... Piano no Mori on the other hand has an EXTREMELY unique art style (kinda in a bad way) and involves little romance.

Both have a strong willed female lead, both are pretty and really serious about their sports (cheering in again and karuta in chihayafuru). If you like again, then you probably will like chihayafuru as well.

Both series are about have a heartwarming vibe that gonna catch your heart, both animes are about the characters and growing by doing what they love and their respective motives, and how they gonna face their extern and intern battles to reach their goals.

The love triangle with this three childhood friends reminds me a bit of Chihayafuru.

The female lead of this manga reminds me a lot of Chihaya - pretty, strong in the sports she is in, a very child like and oblivious. The male lead reminds me a lot of Taichi - Smart and he's been in love with the female lead ever since they were kids. They got separated during middle school and meet up again in HS. They help the female lead into achieving her goal even though it's painful sometimes.

Futaba and Chihaya are really similar. They both want to be "the best version of themselves" and keep trying to change for better. They are strong and can stand for themselves. In both mangas we have love triangle between one gril and two boys although romance is more important in Ao Haru Ride, and in Chihayafuru it's on second plan (first is karuta).

They both have a sort of love triangle but the main character is still waiting to rise to the top and meet her childhood friend who moved away. FN is about music but they both have group members to rely on and they both have a goal which is to become the best. The main characters are both really passionate in what they do plus the characters are pretty similar.

Do you like sports series with big casts of complex, believeable characters, each with their own motivations and goals? Do you want these characters to live up to their respective potentials as well? Then you would make the perfect choice by reading Haikyuu!! or Chihayafuru. Both of these titles are easily some of the best stories with some of the best characters in the entire medium. I could also recommend either of these titles for their endings alone. Chihayafuru especially has an absolutely perfect ending, maybe even my favourite of all time.

Similar love triangle but flipped gender. Popular type vs quiet type both fall for the main character. Shy type was closer to the main character first. Popular type is also hard working. Rivalry is complex because of friendship.

The main girl's sister is also a model.

Akane and Chihaya are similar protagonists. Both manga follow their journies within a niche subculture based around a traditional craft. Fans of grounded character development and shonen-flavored competition will enjoy both.

-Themes of discovering a passion and going all-in -As you read you learn more about a concept, with Chihayafuru it was Karuta and Blue Period explores the world of art -Themes of talent vs. hard work -Both manga give very rewarding feelings when the protagonists are successful or the characters support one another

Both manga, though set in completely different settings, have some very similar elements: -dense main character -love triangle -same love triangle dynamics (you'll see when you read them) -main character aims to round up a motley crew -lots of internal conflicts -good dose of comedy -quite a bit of crying -paying tribute to Japanese culture, history and traditions -beautiful art -both are really awesome!

Starting with the differences: Sakamichi no Apollon evolves around music, Chihayafuru doesn´t. And whereas Sakamichi no Apollon tells the way in which the characters must deal with certain issues they drag from the past, Chihayafuru deals more with self-improvement. But in both stories the characters develop a deep friendship that starts because they share a common interest or passion: in the case of Sakamichi no Apollon it´s music, in the case of Chihayafuru it´s karuta. And this friendship works as a force that provides strength and support. In both stories art is a central issue: be it music or poetry. Both succeed in representing something that is very  read more

Although Chihayafuru is really a sports/competition manga and Sunadokei is purely a slice of life, both are coming of age stories that follow three childhood friends as they grow up and their simple friendship becomes more complicated. They invoke similar feelings when reading, have similar themes, and also kind of similar characters. Romance is the focus of Sunadokei from the beginning while Chihayafuru it is more of an underlying theme / subplot

A competitive game. Saki and Chihayafuru chronicles the stories of a girl that strives to become the best at what they hope to be. In their stories, there is competition, learning, and discovery that revolves around such a game. In Saki, it's mahjong. In Chihayafuru, it's karuta. They both belong a team/club and each day improves by going up against the best of the best. By doing so, they discover not only more to the game but those around them. There is a decent amount of drama and comedy in both series. They also take place in a school life environemtn. Chihayafuru has more additional  read more

somehow the charactersetting in chihayafuru really reminded me of bokura wa itsumo - with chihaya's personality being similar to nori, arata to haruna and taichi to kyosuke. the stories are totally different though, but definitely worth reading

Penguin Prince is a collection of oneshots, but the 2nd story has the same traditional japanese card game "Hyakuunin Isshu" involved, that connects both of the main characters. While Chihayafuru concentrates more on drama and slice of life, the oneshot is more of a rom-com.

It becomes much more apparent later on, but if you liked the themes of one you will probably find something enjoyable in the other. They both are founded on a dream (fashion, kind of, in K and karuta in C) and follow different characters as they face the realities that make achieving their dream difficult. But, they also focus on strong friendships that allow for characters to persevere. There's a lot of self-doubt, and resulting self-exploration. If you liked the characters in one of these manga, here is another point of similarity. The female protagonists are both total geeks who obsess over something that they  read more

Both leads are weird in their own way (they definitely are not normal heroines). These mangas follow the girl on her journey to become the best at her under-rated sport. The character development of the lead is great, along with her allies and enemies. There is romance, however, in Chihayafuru, whereas in Dance! Subaru, there is not any.

Two manga focused on traditional Japanese folk dancing (Tsukikage Baby) and poetry games (Chihayafuru) with hints of romance scattered here and there. The main characters are high school girls and boys in both manga.
reportRecommended by buunny
Both are sports related mangas where the female leads are in love with the sport, there's a love triangle in each just in Chihayafuru it's not as noticeable, the female lead makes new friends, they're both considered really beautiful, overall they're both amazing stories.

Similarities: -main character discovers a competitive sport -the sport is not usually viewed as competitive -they both meet strong opponents but perseveres and continues to pursue the sport -small school club -potential love interest

Wow, I'm shocked no one has recommended Chihayafuru yet... o: The plot itself is very similar to Stardust Wink.! ♥ Both girls have two childhood friends who are guys. ♥ Taichi and Sou both like the main girl but the girl doesn't really notice/like them back. ♥ Taichi and Sou are both very popular/good looking. ♥ Arata and Hinata are both the quieter childhood friend that the girl likes. The main difference is that in Chihayafuru, the girl's life revolves around this game called Karata. :P
