Background

Death Note Tanpenshuu was published in English as Death Note Short Stories by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint on May 10, 2022. The series was also released in Portuguese by Editora Devir on June 24, 2024.

C Kira-hen, a.k.a. Death Note: Tokubetsu-hen, was drawn in commemoration of the screening of the live-action movie, L change the WorLd. The one-shot was published in English as a part of VIZ Media's Death Note All-in-One Edition, which was released on September 6, 2017.

Simply a cute collection of the extra Death Note material released over the series' initial run. It helps that the cover's illustration looks nice as well. Overall, It was an enjoyable read.

The stand out for most is going to be the a-Kira one shot. I've reread it at least 3 times at this point (once when it initially released), it's been good every time. An honorable mention to the Taro Kagami short story as well; it's the most lighthearted of the bunch (by Death Note standards), and a fun show of a Death Note user less "wise" than Light was.

The top review states that this is apparently a very good read if you're a "Death Note fan". I, respectfully, disagree. This short story is absolutely not something I'd recommend to a "Death Note fan" with excitement. Is it Death Note? Sure, yeah I suppose it is and has that similar charm to it, but it's kind of like going from L to Near in the original run. Death note is easily one of the best starter anime/manga to get into Japanese Animation/Manga. With the ending of death note it was a clear cut ending where you pretty much couldn't branch off of it and make a sequel.

Yet that's what this series tries to do and it fails to be death note in every way possible
