I feel like I have read far enough into Sakamoto Days to say it isn't the best shounen manga out there, never has been, never will be. That being said, I would be a liar if I said this wasn't a worthy read. So let's jump into it.
Story: 6.5/10: Sakamoto days story in the begining is quite...just...okay, it's nothing special, the guy is just an ex-assassin avoiding being iced and doing it all in flashy style. But as the plot thickens a bit, the narratives purpose seems to unfold. But as of chapter 196, it doesn't seem there is a grand thing each character

Another shonen flop with a protagonist that can't die. Mega plot armored. doesn't matter what the bad guys throw at him, he will always counter them with some really stupid plot convinced device.
Cant believe people actually like this and give it an 8. It deserves a 2, and I'm being humble. Its a sad anime copying john wick but in a corny and edgy way. You cant take seriously an anime where the prota can stop a bullet with a little ball he spited from his mouth. so dumb. Another thing is that sakamoto is a carbon copy of Anzai Mitsuyoshi from slamdunk. omg..they didnt even ... Jan 10, 2025
Sakamoto Days! An absolute masterpiece on how to do the Shonen genre correctly, especially in todays market. With the recent departure of Jujutsu Kaisen, I really believe it to contain all the qualities needed to take over the mantle and become the new Big Shonen manga and not tryna jinx it but anime aswell.
Brief Summary: So Sakamoto Days follows Sakamoto, a former hitman who retired from the field to pursue a normal life with the woman of his dreams and his daughter. However, a few years into his retirement, he is pulled back into the game after a former associate of his, Shin comes to visit ... Jun 30, 2024
Sakamoto Days quickly became one of my favorite manga series. The blend of humor and action is spot-on, with Sakamoto’s hilarious attempts to balance his old skills with his new life providing plenty of laughs. The action scenes are dynamic and well-drawn, making every fight exciting to follow
One thing I really appreciate is the character development. Sakamoto’s transition from a deadly hitman to a loving family man is both heartwarming and compelling. The supporting characters are also well-fleshed out and add depth to the story However, there are moments when the storyline feels a bit predictable, and there are so many surprises that it can sometimes ... A mix of John Wick and old-school Jackie Chan. Sakamoto Days is exciting, stylish, and hardboiled.
The story starts slow, with mostly daily hijinx surrounding the titular character as a retired assassin. However, the story quickly developed into exploring the underworld and crime syndicates at war. What is interesting is, that the main character himself is not centered around this conflict, but still he involves himself in order to maintain his peaceful life and the people he loves. In that, he appears almost like a force that suddenly would appear in the heat of battle to tip the scale to the good guy's favor. The main character ... Feb 12, 2024
Sakamoto Days is breath of fresh air. You will not regret giving it a read.
For starters, the humor is genuinely funny. Something about the jokes and little facial expressions/quirks the characters make is so charming. Despite Sakamoto being an obvious standout from the rest, EVERYBODY has a history, a motive, etc. You will fall in love with these characters quickly. HOWEVER. It can get serious, FAST. This is an action-packed story about assassins. Shit is NOT sweet. The fights are incredibly choreographed, and while there are plenty, they all serve a purpose, and often bare some twists; as mysteries unravel and pieces to the story's ... Jan 25, 2024

Some series stay with you as its themes reach a place deep inside you; some connect you to a place in time you long to return to. Then there are series like Sakamoto Days that go beyond feeling and nostalgia and hit you like an assassin’s bullet in the head. Its approach may be linear, but still unexpected.
Sakamoto Days follows a premise ultimately uncomplicated; as easy to grasp as the handle of a gun, but so often abused or mishandled by authors of lesser skill. We have in the rounded and soft spoken Sakamoto a lead whose presence encapsulates the special qualities of this ... Nov 17, 2023
One of the best shounen manga in recent year.
The premise is cliche. A retired super-assassin got married, became fat and open a supermarket. His past caught up to him and he now needs to clean up his issue before they endanger his wife and daughter. The only difference is he swears to his wife that he won't take another life. Later on Sakamoto is joined by a kid who idolized him, a triad girl, and others. The main attractive points from this manga are the action scenes and how each assassins have their specialized technique/weapons. Sakamoto unique ability can use anything as weapon, including debit card and bag of flour. While ... Nov 11, 2023
In the midst of many other manga series in Shounen Jump, Sakamoto Days stands out for its simple and engaging approach, steering clear of complex power systems or fantasy worlds.
Originally planned to follow an episodic approach, with Sakamoto being targeted by different assassins, the narrative expands surprisingly. New characters and factions are introduced smoothly, enriching the plot without disrupting the pace. While not featuring complex characters, Sakamoto Days has done a commendable job in constructing them, giving each distinct personalities and designs. Notably, secondary characters, such as Shin, undergo notable development. They transition from supporting roles to key players, showcasing unique skills and determination. One of ... Sep 8, 2023
From what I've seen in manga fight scenes this manga does it the best. There is a certain prose in the way the mangaka choreographs the fights that it feels more like you're watching john wick in manga form than just another boring fight scene.
This manga does super well in Story telling - Diverse characters and their point of views are shown not just the main characters akin to how demon slayer takes one episode to answer why someone turned into a demon Pacing - It doesn't feel rushed every arc almost goes minute by minute without it feeling like a drag since its fast paced World ... Sakamoto Days is a series that knows what it is and performs that to the absolute best possible quality: and that is, it's an action comic. I feel that rating it on the same metrics I might rate a different series with would not do it justice, though I will anyway for consistency's sake. I'll add why I think that some of the pieces it lacks aren't as important as it may seem at the end of the review.
Story: 8/10 Sakamoto Days' story isn't anything crazy, it's got a fun concept and the world may not be complex but it is considerably well thought out. ... Jan 20, 2023
Sakamoto Days short review (without spoilers):
Sakamoto Days is a refreshing manga series in the shounen genre. I wouldn't call I peak fiction, but it is still damn good and overshadowed by other mangas: First of all, there is little to no magic involved, with superhuman strength and unique talents (like Spy X Family or Gintama). Fights scenes are not too long nor too short, they are creative, with different characters, situations and weapons. The character designs are made so well that you can easily recognise and distinguish pretty much every single character in the series. Comedy is present but hasn't made me laugh yet, however, conversations between certain characters ... Jan 2, 2023
THIS MANGA SHOULD HAVE MORE RECOGNITION
it is great in all of its aspects, this is for sure one of the best things shonen jump has to offer for the past two years its comedy its fight scenes its characters the way the story progresses all blended to give us this masterpiece just read it and I assure you that you won't regret it Story 8/10 it is about the greatest assassin to ever grace the planet tarou sakamoto retiring after seeing a woman at a convenience store, married her, got a kid and gained weight the story about much more than tarou just protecting his ... After 100 chapters in, I think it is safe to say that Sakamoto Days is one of the most well balanced action/comedy shonen around. The main character Sakamoto is really an interesting protagonist, and it is nice to see a main character that is an older individual in a shonen. Sakamoto has a very wholesome and genuine disposition for an assassin, which goes to show how much his family means to him.
The side characters and the ever growing staff in the store are wonderful sources of characterization as well. That is all I can really say without spoilers. Aside from the charming setup of a ... Dec 7, 2022
Sakamoto Days is an action comedy manga centering around the ex-assasin Sakamoto Taro who is now running a convenience store. He has an esper pupil, Shin, who tends the convenience store with him and later on they will have more characters hanging around with them in the convenience store.
This manga is great because the comedy, while nothing too creative and out there, is very funny and well written with some endearing side gags. Honestly, the manga has found some genius comedic areas that I feel like it should commit to it harder (such as whenever they are starting a "mission" which is usually a ... Oct 26, 2022
Hyped up by many as the next big thing in Shonen Jump. Does it truly deserve the hype it receives? The current shonen jump roster has no shortage of battle shonens, with big names like One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia as well as rising series like Undead Unluck, Mashle and Mission: Yozakura Family. With such an oversaturated lineup for the genre, how exactly does a battle shonen like Sakamoto Days stand out among the rest?
The biggest standout it has as a battle shonen is the extremely well drawn art of its fight scenes. It has such a gorgeous display of dynamic movements ... Jul 23, 2022
TLDR; Sakamoto Days is great, very similar to Gintama in my opinion, and is worth the read to anyone who likes shounen manga. 10/10, Flawless
Sakamoto Days is quite an odd manga experience for me, you see typically I like to be quite critical of the media I consume. I like to read between the lines, look for the metaphors, the hidden meanings, and I like to dig beneath the surface. Yea, yea, I know I sound like one of those fake youtube/instagram critics right now, but it's usually a large part of my enjoyment of a piece of media. However, Sakamoto Days is different. It ... Sakamoto Days is one of the best action manga out there right now. While the story isn't necessarily deep, complex, or innovative, you root for the heroes to succeed and the villains are consistently threatening without seeming incompetent. Everyone has a clear motivation. The characters are reasonably compelling, and everyone exhibits a level of emotional maturity that falls in line with the subject matter. It's campy and comedic at times, but not obnoxious or melodramatic. You also don't get huge mid-fight monologues that bring the pacing to a stand-still.
The real strength of this series is the fight choreography. I truly feel that Yuto Suzuki is ... May 15, 2022
I would swipe past the Sakamoto Days tab on the Shonen Jump app all the time and think to myself "who would read this? It looks terrible." That was one of the dumbest thoughts I ever had, because Sakamoto Days is a jam and one of the most fun Shonen Manga I've read since Spy X Family (which, ironically, has a similar premise.)
Taro Sakamoto, the titular character, is a fat old man with a wife, daughter and a grocery store. He's also formerly Japan's best assassin. He's since settled down, but when a bounty is put on his head by his former colleagues, it's up ... |
