The perfect 10/10 age gap comedic romance that was going on for the first ~25 chapters is a mask. The genre randomly turns into a whole different one and the story as a whole changes from a deep and probably one of the best to ever do it age gap shoujo into "watch your lover fall for another person, in front of you in real-time and actually emotionally cheat for no reason and change into a completely different character randomly". Psychological tag, btw. NTR fans and alternative-love fans, this could be just for you peeps. Unironically. Chapter 38 made me puke, lol.
Sensei is done so
...
incredibly well and never does it feel like a weird fetish or wish fulfillment manga. The Sensei character is deep and human, making the age gap work in a realistic way that also still plays into the Shoujo demo without being overbearing, cringe, uncomfortable or cliche. Watching him think, rethink, grow and change in regards to many different things is the only saving grace at this point (ch49).
She WAS a solid and consistent but still fresh and fun character. Her actions and interactions MADE sense, her way of thinking and what we knew about her feelings MADE sense. Her character is 80% different from ch35 onwards. It MADE sense, not anymore. There was nothing that happened that could've swayed her this much this quickly. She at some points after ch38 is becoming self-aware and even calls herself a two-timer- to no avail. She just keeps acting weirdly disgustingly.
She suddenly loves the attention. Suddenly completely forgets about Sensei. Suddenly swoons for another guy in front of Sensei. Flaunts matching accessories and gift in front of Sensei *puke*. People might say it is an opinion but it just feels like full fledge pseudo emotional cheating.
I legit feel sorry for Sensei even if he still is considered only her guardian. I thought this is a true age gap with one party showing true unconditional love. That is not the case anymore. This was IMO her most interesting trait but it simply is not there anymore. Poof. Polyarmory fans could rejoice, if only the other guy wasn't such a disgusting wimp manipulator hypocrite.
It sucks. That's it. It is not enjoyable what happened to her and how her group of friends is handled. The idea was okayish (even if questionable); add to the age gap by having her get close to people her own age and fully realize what she wants from and with Sensei. But this is where gold turns into shit, literally.
We start with her already fully committed to him. Her character is established in a way that allows huge amounts of growth, true. But that is the one point that was consistent and gave so much depth to her psyche, feelings and actions. The author was in too deep at this point. There is no way anything could've happened to make her behave like she did in ch38-40/45 but author said "wait, wtf am I doing, how do I progress/drama?" It is all random forced asspull, completely ruining her and her most enjoyable aspects.
She acts as if she was dating that cringe brat, fully enabling him even if brainwashed. I wish I was joking but the author is making her look EASY. WTF is chapter 38 or 45? Fuck off. (No spoiler, just exaggerated explanation of her as of that point)
As for the antagonist, the brat has no real impact and there is no suspense. Everything he does is selfish and only enabled by her (after author force changed her). 90% of what he does would never be allowed by her but author wanted her to be a cheater all the way so just have her let him have his way with her! *puke*
The character is annoying. But not in the "Whew, the author really did well here, I hate this char! Well done, author! Great char!" Nope. He is poorly written. He could never exist without the aforementioned asspull changes to her. He gets away with so much stuff that would be unthinkable before. At times we see him acting like some super villain but nobody reacts to it? All friends seem to tolerate him but they all kinda know that what he is doing is completely selfish and wrong but it just plays out so poorly in a way that makes you question all characters but Sensei.
Why should you care about the conflict when it feels 100% forced, enabled only by god's grace and too far almost every time without any repercussion, ever. They all let him manipulate her to the highest degree. He says stuff that should make her hate him instantly but author just brushes over it with another half empty panel of some funny closeup X( :3 or whatever face. Lame.
I wholeheartedly can say: do not read this manga. Yeah, I could go for the usual "read until x and just move on" but what was done to her character is absolutely vile and a kick in the readers, MINE, face. Can't mention it enough, but fuck how Hiiragi changed the whole cast's dynamic and how he freely can manipulate her and exercise power over every character. A heartfelt L author for ruining what could've been THE single best age gap Shoujo.
