(TW for attempted assault)
Cute art, but unfortunately that's about it.
By the end of the book i wasn't rooting for their relationship, I was mentally screaming at Santa to find a new boyfriend.
Rintarou, the lazy guy in this scenario, is unfortunately a very bad partner, but not because of his laziness.
Here are a few non-exhaustive things he did in the manga, i'll let you judge by yourself:
- Get extremely jealous of anyone who spends time with Santa, especially Rintarou's own family.
- Tries to force himself on Santa when they're both visiting Rintarou's family. The only reason why he stops is because Santa treatens to
...
break up with him if he assaults him.
- When Santa is overwhelmed by work, instead of helping him relax and cooking him food, he gives him beer and says "if you die (from not eating), i'll die too"
- Santa starts buying lots of "ugly" things he love and cares less about how much money they spend because he's excited and happy to get married, which make Rintarou say "let me experience some of our happiness too", implying that Santa needs to starts managing their money more seriously again (keep in mind Rintarou loves fashion and often buys clothes).
This, adding to the fact that Rintarou's family very clearly tells Santa to "please never break up with Rintarou", really makes the reader feel like Santa is trapped in the relationship, even though I'm not sure this is what the author intended since they end up getting happily married in the end.
Cute art, some funny moments, but overall the relationship feels toxic and unbalanced.
