As of now, the public rating of this manga is an average 6.77 but don't let this sway you from reading it. Perhaps you come here looking for gold but instead you find diamond in this work of art.
The story in short is a demon king coming back for revenge as he was slain by the hero of his evil doings. The concept is generic but as the story progresses, it slowly branches out as it's own tree. Rather than vengeance, it slowly turns into a redemption for our main character. Instead of coming out as "overpowered" and wrecking everything, his reincarnated form is less
...
than a fraction of his former glory. He declares himself as the brutal emperor but quite no one buys it so he struggles to prove even himself that he is strong. The story is very direct in his development, as the more he struggles, the more he understands about the destruction he had laid waste upon the world. The areas he travels to and the interactions of other monsters soon makes him realize that he was the cause of everything and guilt builds up in him. However rather than running away, he repents and takes the role as a leader to guide monsters away from the extinction that humanity wishes upon them.
STORY: RATING (7)
The story is quite straightforward, the demon king wanting to become strong, but he later on his true strength comes from the people that he proved his worth and leadership to. Not only that, the author adds little teasers and hints about some greater story beyond this one. It makes you yearn for conclusion and context. Don't worry, it will slowly unravel.
ART: RATING (10)
As an artist myself, I found this art unfathomable, in the sense of ASTONISHING.
Before I tell you the parts that amaze me, I must concern you about the parts that somewhat bothered me. There is no doubt that the artist has a passion for drawing monsters but for the "human-like" characters. Well, they are certainly off-putting. Proportions, face, they're crudely drawn but yeah, it's a manga. Can't go expecting much. Another thing that might be off putting is that at some parts of the story, the panels are way too detailed and it becomes very "muddled." I've spent a great time staring at every single detail and hell, even I can't figure what is going on most of the time. Though, that's the charm.
Once you give this a read, you will know for sure that this manga is the epitome of love. By love, I mean the effort they put into every single detail. If you see the double page spreads, make sure to spend time on it because it for sure is a masterpiece. Many panels look finished and unrushed. They've taken their time on it. Occasionally, one panel will stand out and it's an outstanding mosaic work of art. Before reading it, skip and take a look at the panels in chapter 56. You will understand what I mean.
I can't even describe you how much I appreciate this manga for it's art. Art is the foundation of stories. Sure, novels and books exist with their "words" but it's all up to the reader's imagination. Art guides the reader, it shows the reader of the world that the ARTIST lives in. This story is perfect evidence.
Though, there are many other works that could be considered better in art than this. But, as advice, don't even think about comparing one's art to another. Art is representation and distinction. Two artists will not be the same.
Basically, the manga has a great story with character building and amazing art. Go give it a read. You won't be disappointed
