Synopsis

To cover her expenses, university student Yuki Shirai works as a part-time rental girlfriend. Once a week, she has to manage the burn scar on her face and put on a fake personality—hiding her cold, calculating, and cynical self—all to suit her client's desires. Having grown up in a family lacking any warmth or love, she works believing money is the only thing that will never betray her.

Meanwhile, Tsuji Souta is unlike Yuki's past clients. Having lied to his friend about having a girlfriend, he hires Yuki for a double date, from where they develop a growing acquaintance. As Tsuji discovers the true Yuki, she sees him as a refreshing change from her other clients. But as they get closer, the two wonder how far they should take this relationship, or perhaps they should just part ways as merely a client and rental girlfriend.

I've been burnout from anime and manga for so long that I can only bear consuming very specific content. Last thing I was able to immerse into so well was Psycho-pass, this time it's this manga. I'm not going to a constructive opinion or whatnot really, I just wanted to say that after trying to find something for nearly a month and going through like 4-5 anime, of which I have dropped/hold on like 3-4, this was the manga that pulled me in and I found most characters relatable and really love them and am rooting and cheering for them. Heck I have found so ...

Basically the anti-version of Rent-a-Girlfriend. I wouldn't even be surprised if its creation was directly influenced by RaG as the first volume is a giant middlefinger to its premise. Instead of feeding into the fantasy of a rental girlfriend and a customer developing feelings for one another, it chooses a much more cynical yet realistic approach. There are no feelings, it's just a job. And instead of glorifying it or downplaying it as any other job, it is treated as what it is: You pay money so someone pretends to be your friend, your partner or your sex fetish.

The strongest aspect of this manga are ...

This was a decidedly uncomfortable read. I don't think you could pay me to read any more. That being said, If you know what you're getting into, I can recommend it.

Incredibly unflinching portrayal of the sex work industry and the psychological experiences of the women it involves. Their motivations, their relationships & their worldviews. Good, bad and ugly. It doesn't matter what circumstances drew them to this work, they experience the highs, lows and lows again all the same. Does the money really matter at the cost of self worth?

If you are a reader sensitive to narratives regarding body image, I would suggest ...
