Synopsis

Youko Furi definitely looks like a delinquent: she's got a tough-girl image that wouldn't be out of place in a gang. When Taira Namito finds himself sitting next to her in his high school class, he's immediately afraid of her. But as it turns out, Furi's rough-and-tumble exterior hides a wholesome, totally cute person underneath–and she's got the hots for Taira. (Not that he has any idea, of course.) One misunderstanding leads to another in this romantic comedy about a clueless dude and the adorable, slightly terrifying affections of the tough girl by his side!

It's not exactly a 'fresh take', but it almost feels like one.

The whole misunderstood-delinquent relationship shtick might be getting close to being overused, if not already, but Tonari no Furi-san ga Tonikaku Kowai's execution of the cliché is nonetheless one that deserves at least some praise.

As far as the storyline and the characters that populate it go, there's not really any need for an introduction beyond the brief synopsis. But unlike many others that revolve around a similar premise, this manga crafts these aspects in a way that avoids becoming annoying and even intolerable, and if anything, that's a great plus.

The easy-on-the-eye art only adds read more

A cute, well executed, lighthearted misunderstood-delinquent love story in a sea of bland stories with the same premise.

The young adventure of trying to figure out each others feelings and all the anxiety that comes with it. I like that the characters arent amebas when it comes to relationships. The misunderstandings aren't there just to keep us in the limbo of not being sure about each others feelings and are being worked on, so that's always welcome

I wish that Furi would be a real delinquent, but that's not what the manga is about so Im not deducting anything because of it, but it would be more read more

After reading the just released chapter 31 I decided to write a more recent review. I will mainly focus on Furi, the romance and mental bullying subplot.

Furi is indeed scary - for the first few chapters that is. The shtick is not necessarily overused but in this mangas case it has no deeper meaning at all and functions as a shallow way to get the story going. But that's okay, I guess.

The mentioned story is pretty much mainly Taira being scared of Furi. All other characters are too, but after interacting with Furi once they are over it and she is just another classmate. Apart read more

This is a great light-hearted high-school romcom manga. It's an episodic format but has good continuity and progress. Art and style is clean and so far the story is developing well although as of Chapter 22 it hasn't really introduced anything unique or surprising - but that is totally fine if you enjoy this kind of classically cliched romcom.

Furi as the delinquent is laughably cute at times whereas Taira whilst classically dense isn't ever annoying so. The dynamic between the two feels natural and is portrayed well. Overall, so far this is a nice relaxing read without any major drama. If you're a fan of read more
