A/N: This is a preliminary perspective based on the first volume of the manga.
Shoutout to my friend SiriusTimeKeeper, he makes some great points in his review.

Before I delve into the five main components of this review, I just have to talk about the title for a second. Because "Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou." roughly translates to "I Shaved. Then I Brought A High School Girl Home." But this title is actually incorrect because he starts shaving after he brings home the high school girl.
My personal favorite interpretation of this is that the author is just clickbaiting readers into reading something that looks ... as if it will be another lighthearted romcom but turns out to be something much deeper, a manga targeted at very genuine problems in society and relationships.
Or maybe it's just a mistranslation. I'll probably never find out.

STORY (8/10):
A guy gets rejected by his coworker, his crush of 5 years. He gets super wasted and goes home to find a high school girl sitting on the street. He invites her inside and eventually decides to take care of her for the time being.
It's a compelling plot, and it doesn't force any unnecessary twists and turns onto you. Rather, it gradually builds into more serious topics, introduces characters smoothly, and you could easily pick up this manga after a few weeks of waiting for the next chapter and still know exactly what's going on.
It's got a slice of life vibe but there is a linear storyline so I guess that tag would be inappropriate. The drama is a little too extra at times, but not to the point of seeming artificial.

ART (9/10)
Art is good, mostly consistent. Character design is pretty vivid but not abnormally so. There's a bit of fanservice, but it's not unbearable. In other words, it looks like a typical romance manga.

CHARACTER (9/10)
The potential in each character in this manga is immense, and I'm fairly sure that this score will have gone up by the time this manga is completed. Each character has a personality aside from their motivations or goals.

MC: He's honest, down-to-earth, and very much human. He makes mistakes and bad decisions, and he's afraid to own up to them. But when it comes down to it, he's pretty reliable. It's fun to watch his interactions with others. Initially, he only acknowledges his flaws, but after he starts living with the girl, he begins to actually work on improving himself.
High School Girl: She's been through a lot, and this has clearly forced her to adopt a playful, flirty mask with which she hides her pain. It's not directly stated, but it's obvious that she and the MC are working to break down those walls and slowly open up to each other.
Best Friend: He's funny, but he's not just a gag character. He gives advice to the MC, even though it's not always right, providing a helpful insight that is separate from the perspective we're shown.
Senpai: It's strongly implied that she rejected him only because she believed him to be in love with her outwards appearance (specifically her oppai). She's smart and professional, but knows how to kick back and relax. But she's later shown to be rather manipulative, setting up potential conflicts for later.
Kouhai: Her work ethic is actually pretty interesting, and it reminds me of procrastination: Sometimes I can't even write a sentence during the first few months, but end up finishing three pages in half an hour. She's not overly pushy or obsessive about the MC, and shows that she is more complex than just her feelings, which gives her surprising character depth.

ENJOYMENT (8/10)
I enjoyed this manga very much. All of the characters have a certain level of complexity; little hidden details give the story more depth, and there's definitely a few valuable lessons packed into it that you might pick up on. Before you judge, I suggest you go try it.

OVERALL (9/10)
I would definitely recommend this manga. Fun read and I look forward to the rest of it.

Light Novel’s Adaptation/ Harem/ Love development/ Heartfelt & Immersive

If the words or sentences above are reasons or statements that you sincerely believe or holds true to the core of how you view females, girls, human beings, and judge if a manga is good or not. Let me get this straight. This manga IS NOT FOR YOU.

For those people who continue ... on reading this review, I just want to say that you are no shallow fellow judging on the elements or reasons why a great manga is a great manga since good stories, oftentimes, reflect, sadly, normal everyday life.

While those words or elements exist in this story, they DO NOT DIMINISH the value of this manga; on the other hand, this particular manga with a seemingly casual and nonchalant title, “I Shaved. Then I Brought a High School Girl Home”, is actually ONE OF THE MOST DELICATE love stories I have ever read. Period.

Just by reading this particular manga, there are so many questions while I slowly digest through the first 9 chapters.
What is love? How does one person react to it or show it? What is the middle ground among platonic, romantic, and sexual relationship? What do people actually seek while being alive? What is happiness?

Story: 9 (still young but bright future.)
Art: 9 (There are several moments when I feel that face to body portion isn’t natural. The overall art is great though~ :) )
Characters: 9 (character growth, perhaps the most important part of this manga, and personalities can been seen, really excited as to how the characters will interact with each other and grow as story goes on. -0.5 for potential error)
Enjoyment: 10 (slow updates kill me every time ;/ you know you count time when you love this manga)

This review is written by a fellow human who wishes people acknowledge the fact that homo sapien is a “forever-changing” species. Past can be a rough past. But, the current state, how a person has become oneself and change from his/her past, is the utmost quintessence. However, if one really wants to understand the past, "sympathy" is needed.

As Trivia_lover has written, which I wholeheartedly agree, “I suggest you go try it.”

When a manga with a title like this manages to become popular, you'd expect it to purposefully mislead you and deliver something wholesome, right? Well, that's sadly not the case. The female side characters serve only to build the protagonist a harem of big-breasted women while the manga can act above generic smut by not outright allowing the protagonist to stick his dick down a high school chick. With that out of the way, I should probably judge the manga as ecchi. After all, it would be unfair of me to expect more out of plain old smut.

The art is pretty good, so you might ... get a rush out of it if hentai starts to bore you, and the protagonist is a perfect blank canvas for any decent person to identify with. Despite these qualities as mindless harem trash -- something I can appreciate as someone who's into mindless moe trash -- I'm still going to give it a rather low score to warn everyone who thinks it's anything more than that.

"Hey young abuse victim who ran away from home, you should stop sheltering here with a person who cares for your health if well, should you instead create shame on your face and go back to your town and possibly come back to suffer physical, sexual or/and mental abuse, which after all for you to take such a risk should be a small thing".

-Bitch ass Boss who doesn't even know the shit she's talking but the manga treats like a sensible and smart person.

Seriously? but what the fuck, what's your problem? so the ending is predictable... who will the protagonist date? ... with your co-worker who doesn't know how to say "no", with your boss who might reject the love of her life because she feels something from her ass or with the young abuse victim trying to recover...?

First, I'm not native english speaker, sorry about any mistake.

It tells the story of a 26-year-old adult who, after being rejected by those who chased him for 5 years, drank too much, and upon returning home, he finds a high school girl lost at night on the street. The girl says that she ran away from home and he decides to give her a place for the night.

Story 6/10:
Looking only at the plot we can see some potential, but the way the characters are does not help. I talk more about this in another session. We can say that there is progression in the story ... but the characters advance and regress on things that already know the author's will. That is, a character who is already aware that girl A likes him, simply forgets at some point in the plot because it is convenient at that time for the author that the character who was once perceptive, now is dense. This happens with bad writers, who are unable to trace the direction of their work and write on the wayof what they are feeling momentarily.

Art 7/10:
Good. Not special, but enjoyable.

Character 3/10:
This is where this work sins immensely. We all know that the romance is between Sayu and Yoshida, but the lack of development of the other female characters that appear and have an impact on the work is too painful. They all exist only to give context to how much the protagonist is a white knight. This is a very old recipe that is, in my opinion, boring. In addition, the protagonist is 26 years old (but at times he looks like a child), initially during the first chapters he seems to be very perceptive, realizing practically everything about the situation of the woman character Sayu, reading the climate to get into complicated matters or not, among other things. But to the author's taste, at times he looks just like a generic harem idiot or a protagonist in action shounens like Goku. Sayu is well built (her past), but it seems a little forced some events that she tells about herself, but it is acceptable. Unfortunately, this work has moments that look more like a shoujo than exactly a shounen (although it was written to please the male audience).

Enjoyable 3/10
In my opinion, if a job does not give you satisfaction in its first volume, it is not enjoyable. It doesn't matter if it is drama, comedy, romance, action, adventure, or any other genre, at some point you need to feel that you are enjoying the work. Works that make you go through 300 chapters of anguish and frustration to deliver something to you in the end, in my opinion it is a failure. There must be peaks of climax in each volume that makes the audience feel like reading the next volume, in this work I didn't feel that. Without spoilers, now the work is moving more and more towards a shoujo drama (what was initially a romance with shounen drama), I don't like this type of drama, so I don't prioritize reading this work.

EDIT: This review is based to counter most of the short-term high-rated ones and is sort of also in my response to this getting an anime, im genuinely shocked that this of all manga / light novels did.

I'm sorry, what?

In stark contrast to the large amount of positive ratings this manga is getting as well as the anime adaptation it's receiving. I think this manga is pretty bad.

Currently, though my memory of this manga is a bit dated, I can't help but feel as if there was no impact and that the relationships between each and every character is stale, shallow, or the main ... two's relationship. Which said relationship I can't really get behind because it feels like this father-daughter type of situation that is then turning into a rebellious phase and I can only really see it going towards a romantic one. I heavily dislike it.

Along with that the side-characters seem, well, shallow and some of them seem "naturally evil?" I don't know how to describe it, it feels as if the main reason they exist is to become a force for character development less than them being actual characters. Like that girl's coworker, that guy is just an embodiment of forced negativity and honestly is my least favorite kind of antagonistic presence.

Beyond that I was so damn bored reading this. I couldn't get invested in any of the characters, the story felt slow, and the new characters were even worse than the ones we'd already introduced. The art was pretty mediocre, no full-panel sakuga scenes yet the animation was still good.

It has some pretty deep themes if you can really get behind the story and characters but I personally never got to the point where I wanted to even contemplate or think about them because I was too busy trying to stay interested in the story at hand.

It's not for me, that's not to say it's terrible, it's just not for me.

Maybe like me, you watched the first episode of the anime because you thought "Why not" and you were pleasantly surprised. So you decided to read the manga out of curiosity and want to know what this series is about. Is it worth reading or watching? I hope to help answer such questions. Naturally, this review will contain spoilers of what is likely volumes 1-2 of the manga.

Story

What the story of this series is at its core: Is a harem about a middle-aged man(Yoshida) who has fallen in love with a high school girl(Sayu) and how he deals with other girls his age, at his ... workplace that also have a romantic interest in him. Nothing about this story is particularly bad. It is the way the story is dressed up at the beginning to be about Yoshida, an intelligent character that can read the mood, taking Sayu in without taking advantage of her. This sets the stage for Sayu to mature, realizing that she can't run away forever and coming to terms with having to go back home. However, it turns into a big competition of who can get Yoshida's affection taking away any natural drama could be established with Suya deciding to come in contact with family to prepare to go home. The way the story is dressed up and what it reveals itself to be(a harem) is bad. The potential is defiantly what hooks you but it sadly takes the path of a generic harem because of how characters act.

Characters

Yoshida - He is introduced as someone who is capable, smart and kind. There is nothing wrong with taking Suya in but what would be wrong is taking advantage of the situation as countless of other men have during her 6 months on the run. His self-restraint is likeable but it doesn't change the fact that he is attracted to her which is understandable. What is sad about this character is that the author dumbs him down for situations like Mishima's confession. For someone who has been rejected himself to play off what was clearly her confession was completely out of character, especially when he picked up various details about Sayu just by talking to her for the first time when he was drunk and after waking up. He is dumbed down to a generic harem MC surrounded by big boobed girls that he lusts over but when push comes to shove, he won't touch them because the only real love interest he has is Suya.

Suya - A girl with a misconstrued values which can be blamed on the adults that took advantage of her I guess. She has normalized her life on the run and has lost her sense of self-worth. What could drive her to such an extent? I would love to know too because it will be a make or break for the series if the reason isn't good enough. A cute girl to sympathize with but what she really needs is a reality check.

Other characters- Gotou is the work colleague Yoshida basically lusted over for 5 years. He knows nothing about her but always goes on about her boobs and thinks he loves her. Asami is a foolish to even bringing up Suya to her "creepy" colleague at work after he literally described a run away girl he used to sleep with. This is after talking to Yoshida and showing enough intelligence to work out he was lying about Suya. This lead to artificial drama because the author turned off everyone's brain for some tension. Although, I guess if he didn't, the series would just be another harem with a dumb MC. Mishima is just there to advise the MC, she really has no chance and is just used as a "wtf are you doing Yoshida" button.

The series' characters are underdeveloped and offer nothing but lectures to the two main leads. Gotou is literally waiting for the MC like she has a chance, Mishima already got rejected and the 4th harem member has only been introduced. Sayu's eventual return home and development is given a back seat so Yoshida can have a harem. The story's potential is given a back making it average at best once you see past the Suya's seduction and the pretty girls after Yoshida. For me, actively wasting time on introducing a new harem member instead of developing existing members who need it or Suya who is your female lead makes this series below average.

Whore => trash?

A story about one guy having a boring life, taking a high school girl and helping her to take life back.

Sayu's past surely makes many readers fell uncomfortable, including me. But, after more 30 chapters, Sayu finally has some happy moments beside a man she loves, starts a new life and accepts to go over dark past.

That's a story many peope call trash because of not standing a whore ready to make herself better. You trash <3

Prejudgments will stop you to understand and sympathize Sayu or Yoshida.

Being the same age as Sayu, I thought it’d be interesting to write an analysis and review of this manga. At the time of writing I am 27 chapters in with many thoughts.

Story - 9
If the title “ I Shaved. Then I Brought a High School Girl Home” has caught your eye and you’re looking for a feel-good romcom with high school girls gushing over a self projectable protagonist, this is not the story for you. This is the story of the relationship between a man placed into a guardian role and a deeply troubled high school girl.

The story deals with difficult and ... touchy topics such as how exploiters can warp people with troubled lives’ view of unconditional love, in this case it is adults taking advantage of a teenage runaway.

There were a couple instances I felt the author stretched situations a bit too far.

Art - 7

The art is cute. It does its job conveying messages, actions, and emotions to the reader. The artist is certainly not untalented but there’s nothing that stands out and makes viewers say “This is Higehiro’s art.”

Character - 9

Yoshida - From the beginning he seems a man down on his luck in the world of romantic love. He is initially uninteresting and is implied to have his job as a salaryman his entire life until he meets Sayu and is put into a guardian role. His unconditional love for her is what helps Sayu develop as a character and drive the story forward.

Sayu - Many people who take this story at face value misunderstand Sayu’s character as her being “whorish” or “slutty” rather than that of a girl unprovided of basic necessities who resolved to sex work in return for food and shelter. As a result of living this way for at least six months she develops an unhealthy relationship with love. Something along the lines of “I do not deserve anything unless I give something in return.” She doesn’t see herself as a person worthy of proper care, lacking true value within herself.

Both their character growth and interactions are incredibly well written. Disturbing when a difficult situation is put in place, tear jerking when placed in heavy hearted ones, and heartwarming when the two bond as family, whether they are aware of it or not.

The main protagonist has been the subject of unrequited love which I assume will be addressed in future chapters. His character development is still in its early stages.

The rest of the cast does a great job of progressing the story. Though something feels amiss about Yuzuha or “Kouhai” girl. She comes off too dependent, her motive is a bit lackluster compared to the other characters, and I would like to see her fleshed out more in future chapters.

This also comes down to personal observation but it’s rare in manga to see women in their 20’s appear in the main cast. It’s a refreshing change from casts consisting of all teenagers.

Enjoyment - 10/10

Overall - 9

Higehiro to me is a story of the complexity of unconditional love. Whether one interprets Yoshida’s relationship as parental or brotherly is debatable, it is clear that his love and care for Sayu is genuine and unselfish, like a guardian’s.

Hopefully this review was not entirely incomprehensible. I look forward to seeing Sayu and Yoshida’s relationship progress. This is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve had the pleasure of reading.

Hige wo Soru is a great manga, that portrays realistical characters with somehow relatable difficulties. It manages to point towards social, personal and interpersonal difficulties of western and japanese society, without losing its focus on the character driven story. Most people might be introduced to it because of the anime adaption and its controversial premise. Despite this premise the manga manages to build itself an identity of its own without relying on cliche stereotypes or redundant story arcs. Its focus is simple and straigthforward: It shows the ... life's and difficulties of a young teenager and young adult as they live together and try to find a solution for their situation. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated.

Characters:
The characters are portrayed believable and realistically. As the manga continues the reasons for the characters actions get explained more and more and their background story starts to open up, bit by bit. Their story is often not simply dumped on to the reader in one character arc, but continuisly developed throughout multiple instances. This is especially obvious in respect to the main female, who's background story is kept hidden for a prolonged time and only parts of it get revealed. This leads in my view to more relatable characters and interactions, since in every day life we usually learn about the stories of persons over years with new information in irregular intervals. All of the interactions feel natural and relatable. People do not simple act based on a simplistic character trait or based on a steorotype. They act because of their own motives and values and respect those in their interactions with other persons.

Seinen not shounen:
I am once again not happy with the shounen category. This manga feels like a seinen manga in every respect. The manga doesn't try to cater to a shounen demographic through it's content or art. The attention to social and personal problems people face is well presented and explained in detail. These are questions that are more important to people in their twenties. How can I aid other's without taking away their means of agency? How can I balance work and private life? How can one go on, even if one faced difficulties in the past? I never felt like the mangaka tries to avoid a certain topic, because it would be too difficult to solve it or to controversial to talk about it. It is also a merit of the manga, that it always stays down to earth and doesn't try to build up unecessary story arcs for drammatic effects without reason. The character are by no means simplistic and don't feel like stereotypes and their interactions are always believable and realistic even if it means that they are less understandable or relatable as persons.

Lastly:
I really have not much critize about this manga apart from small details. The art is by far the weakest aspect, but even there the manga manages to deliver and convey the messages through clear and impressful images. The story is relative straightforward and simple to follow. Since it is mostly focused on character interactions, personal feelings and difficulties of the main cast, there aren't many story plots apart from that. I also think, that this manga will stay on a good track unless it decides to forgo most of it's positive points in favor for a simplistic harem romcom or introduces unecessary story plots.

This story deals with a working adult who picks up a runaway high school girl. As you might guess, being a runaway high school girl, she also has lots of issues and an awful backstory, mainly using her body as payment for being able to stay at someone else's house.

The story is a good premise and it makes for an interesting read. However, from a perspective, the problem with these kinds of stories is that no matter how realistic the author tries to tackle the issues of both protagonists, in reality things will not always go as planned. The responsible thing is always to ... turn over the runaway high school girl to the proper authorities and deal with her. Because no matter how much you see it, "survival sex" and "sex trafficking" have certain aspects that overlap with each other.

And since our male protagonist is such a saint, it gives the reader a sense that he is a very cool and admirable person, enough for the female MC to somewhat develop feelings for him. While this is also possible in real life, and as with any other manga, it leaves out a lot of aspects and plot holes.

And as with any other manga, the main and supporting casts are too kind. This does not happen in the real world. While I do like the premise, the situation created by the story setting is still at best fictional and leaves a lot of room for the reader for imagination.

Overall, if you are bad with stuff that makes your emotional safety locks break, I do not recommend this manga. However, I did enjoy this manga to a certain extent in that it tackles issues of conflict of interest and an honest to goodness heartfelt sincerity from both protagonists.

To be honest, this promised a lot at first, but after several chapters, it became one more harem manga.
the premise sounded good, it was nothing special but a bit original.
One aspect that I love about this manga is the way in which the protagonists give that feeling of being grateful with life but they know that it will not always be good, it is a very realistic and well managed aspect that I have not seen in other anime / manga.
The characters are too many cliches, there are the girls who fall in love with the protagonist when the main girl falls in love with ... him (like any romantic harem), the friend of the main girl, who is like the extra help towards this, there is also a character who It is a kind of villain or obstacle of the protagonists but in its arc not long ago, and ... nobody else, the main girls of the harem are not interesting: this is the one who wants to win first, the milf with the big breasts and the girl protagonist but who will be the one that in the end the protagonist stays.
the art is very good, I have nothing to say here.
This is basically another romantic harem cliche anime / manga of the lot, only with very sexy character designs, a slightly more adult drama, and more serious and with a message that the protagonists convey very well. the rest is not special.
It may interest you at first, but after several chapters it will not be a big deal and it will be another one in the pile.

I really like some story like this so it makes me enjoyed, although manga is update to late nevertheless i love it and I think that having this kind of manga for me to read would be a great thing. I read a lot of manga, but the story that I read back to the top of my favorite one in my heart ,Plus a story that falls in love with the story that runs until you want to know the story that will happen until you can not feel like drug addiction

I will try to keep this short as much as possible because this manga has so many things I don't like. Possibly a spoiler. Read at your risk.

Story (5/10): Just from reading the synopsis, you could somewhat understand what you will be getting into. A teenage girl ran from home for six months and don't forget the part where she ALSO uses her body for payment to live under someone's house. Now, don't get me wrong. What she did and what her decision was, I could care less. The part I'm frustrated with is we're going to see some romantic relationship between the teenage ... girl and the male MC. The thing is the male MC already likes someone (his co-worker). I believe the MC's co-worker still likes him but is probably afraid. Just imagine your future wife uses her body to just live in a house because of the complicated situation she's in. But you didn't know until you learn from her. Now, tell me. Would you still build a relationship with her? Marry her someday? Even after she fucked many guys in the past six months? Tell me how many she did for the last six months? Probably too many to count with your hands. Now, come back to this and connect it to the MC. Don't you feel sad for him? I hope he doesn't build any kind of romantic relationship with her besides the co-worker. Understand now? The romance kind you're looking at. Not a clean one but a harsh one. But why harsh and not dirty? Because she forced herself. So it would be a harsh romantic relationship.

Art (10/10): Nothing to mention about this.

Character (9/10): Nothing as well. All the characters have their own shit. I don't hate the high school girl but how she might or possibly build a relationship with the MC guy. She can do that with other guys but not with our MC. He got other goods to take of.

Enjoyment (5/10): Not feeling good about reading any further than I already had. The high school girl is just killing me. I just feel bad for our MC. He's going to have to go through hell just for her.

Overall (5/10): Pretty below average for this manga. If you're looking for a good romance, then I suggest you look elsewhere; otherwise, you're going to have to deal with the high school and the MC going through shit. Also, don't get me wrong that this manga is bad or anything. It's not like the manga itself is horrible. But the story that is happening. I don't know how this will end but my guess is the high school girl will be saved by our MC guy but because it's still ongoing and relatively new, so I could be completely wrong but from how this story is going it would probably somewhere along those lines. You know what they say right? The ending determines the manga's greatness. But I already dropped this. I might come back once the manga is finished. I'll skip everything and read the end and see how things end up.

Who said nice guys finish last?
I shaved. Then I brought a high school girl home is a touching story exploring the themes of belonging, redemption and accepting your past. This is my first review so it might be a little 'chotto yabai'.

I shaved. Then I brought a high school girl home's story is about a high school's girl coming of age and how she learns to love herself. Through the relationship's by fate she encounters she is able to persevere and face her past which I am ambitiously waiting for. I love the way the manga is able to incorporate and ... good balance between wholesome moments and the serious and taboo topics of Sayu's past

Imagine if Jesus was bored and decided to reincarnate into a human in japan. Jesus-kun? not quite, Yoshida is his name. He is just the typical Japanese office worker but he's also a lot more than that. "There isn't a single person alive who'd do something with no advantages and only disadvantages". when Yoshida is asked this he does not know why he does go to the lengths he does. But it obvious from my perspective, he does not do it for any reward, he does it simply out of the bottom of his heart. He is a nice guy.

Sayu is a runaway girl, who carries a lot of emotional baggage, emphasising a lot. Though nothing has been revealed her past, it is clear that she will have to face it at one point. I hope to see more of her origins (ambitiously waiting). It is endearing to see her finally see some self worth as her relationships grow and new ones sprout. Even with her past traumas Sayu is a normal high school girl at heart who has the same ambitions as normal girls do,

Enjoyment 10/10
I definetely enjoyed the manga because of the many wholesome moments it contains while also having enjoyed the more mature themes of the story. I would not recomeend this manga for anyone does not enjoy. Similar manga to this would be rent a girlfriend (a bit less on the more mature subjects),

First off I wanna say that this is the first manga that I have ever read so I might be biased in my though as I don't have any mangas that I can compare this one to for a reference. I only started this manga because I watched the first episode of the anime and really enjoyed it. So I wanted to read about it in more detail and learn more about the characters and their development as I know anime tend to leave some details out for the flow of the plot. Though like I have said I haven't read mangas before I really ... enjoyed the plot and the way that it was set up and how how everything flowed story wise. I feel like could relate to both of the MCs. I mainly liked the manga as I found it kinda wholesome and because it deals with some real world issue.

To be honest, I can't really pinpoint the main reasons I liked this manga it just hit a spot for me and I just enjoyed it throughly from start to end.
