Synopsis

The Phantom Thieves are a mysterious group who claim to steal the hearts of corrupt individuals in order to achieve world reformation. Allegedly, those who have their hearts stolen will confess to their crimes of their own free will. However, some people believe that the Phantom Thieves are merely an urban legend.

Ren Amamiya and Ann Takamaki are two members of the Phantom Thieves who learn that Ann's coworker, the glamorous model Mika, is being harassed. Before they can convince her to ask for help by posting on the Phantom Aficionado website, all three witness a top production company executive's medical emergency—an incident that is later theorized to be attempted murder. The rest of the Phantom Thieves agree to investigate the presumed poisoning so they can clear the suspicion aimed at Mika. Soon enough, they find themselves looking into several other matters concerning Ren's "Confidants" from different walks of life and different parts of the city. The pressing question is: could all of the Phantom Thieves' self-proclaimed "missions" possibly be related?

Background

There was some confusion at Anime Expo 2019 when Yen Press announced that it would be releasing Persona 5: Mementos Mission as well as Persona 5 a la Carte outside of Japan in 2020, and then later retracted that statement. However, the truth is that Yen Press is not the license holder for Persona 5: Mementos Mission or Persona 5 a la Carte, so they have no say in whether those manga are localized.

As opposed to the Persona 5 manga series by Hisato Murasaki adapted for English release by Viz Media, which is a faithful retelling of the Persona 5 game, Mementos Mission by Rokuro Saito focuses on original side stories. Rokuro Saito is the same artist behind the manga adaptation of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

I really enjoyed this manga. The 3 volumes tell a full and satisfying story that remains faithful to the game and its characters. Mementos Mission takes place between the 5th and 6th palaces of the game, and focuses on an original villain, along with other new and familiar faces. Honestly, this is probably the only good thing to come out of the mediocre 5th palace. The artwork is also great, and definitely nails Soejima's original style. I also appreciate how much characterization Joker is given here, along with some really funny and memorable moments. If you're looking for more Persona 5 content, or you just ...

I didn't expect this level of quality and was pleasantly surprised by this manga.
This manga is accurate to the game and opens more to the characters.


Story 8/10

Subjectively I consider it very good, as it's similar to the story from the game as well as adding an original villain.
While the story is good I wouldn't say it's 9/10 or 10/10 but rather a solid 8/10 story, very good.

A really enjoyable manga for Persona 5 fans and a great way to spend more time with the characters! I find this manga incredibly underrated among Persona fans and I feel like more people should know about it.

While the story is non-canon and isn’t some grand adventure filled with twists and turns, as a side story it’s really enjoyable! It mainly focuses on some of the less explored aspects of the original game, like Ann's modeling career or Akechi and Sae's relationship.
