EDIT (May 2024): Good news! The series will continue from October 2024 onwards!
Very few manga series can balance the scales between feeling classy and lewd, and 'Kannou Sensei' is definitely one of them. Which is exactly why I'm so bummed it's been on hiatus for a while.
Let me outline how the series achieves that, and why it's a definite 8/10 for me.
The art and the overall atmosphere are, without a doubt, a big contributor to why 'Kannou Sensei' stands out so much.
The retro, classy setting adds an enchanting layer to the already alluring romance (love at first sight, pretty much). There's something about a
...
no-smartphone, low-tech, taking-you-decades-back backdrop to a decent story. It's not very common.
Then you have the art, which is possibly one of the best I've seen in the romance genre. Outstanding facial expressions, beautiful and vivid. Tender and gentle art in some scenes; erotic in a very fine, yet lewd way in others. The mangaka has a wide range of artistry and is not afraid to show off.
That isn't to say only art and atmosphere drive the story, though. The characters themselves are quite interesting and well fleshed out, albeit suffering from a few drawbacks. My biggest gripe lies with the male lead, who, despite being 40, sometimes is overboard with the teenage-grade of reactions/outbursts. Thankfully, it's not TOO overdone.
I don't want to reveal additional details, but I'll mention that both the female lead and him have a spicy history in their life (not with each other, of course). It's another aspect in which the series differs from more 'vanilla' romances and I'm all for it.
Regarding the plot pace, things here tend to run slightly slower. Some progression points happen quickly, but the general flow of the story is more gradual than in many other romances. The plot progression, however, doesn't drag on too much - which I'm thankful about.
'Kannou Sensei' has its irritating moments, but they are more than balanced out by the beautiful art, unique atmosphere, and alluring main cast. If you're in the mood for an old-school romance, you're at the right place. That's if you don't mind the hiatus - and the fact that it came at a very pivotal point, unfortunately.
