I am not Japanese, I just read manga and that has given me some insight into Japanese history. I like history and so i read lots of historical manga. War, action, history what’s not to like?
This is a historical manga
One of the most famous man in Japan was Oda Nobunaga. Starting in 1560, he had a small clan, which he grew to become powerful enough to take over about half of Japan.
He is known as the first unifier of Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu are the second and third respectively.
It is said that as he became more powerful Nobunaga became more
...
cruel, and mistreated his vassal Akechi Mitsuhide. Akechi betrayed him killing him in a famous incident— Honnouji burning incident (1582).
Then his son Nobutada also died. Hideyoshi claimed he was the most loyal vassal of Nobunaga, and claimed the seat of Nobunaga.
That’s how the story goes.
BUT....... a modern historical researcher, who claims to be a descendant of Akechi Mitsuhide claims this story of betrayal is a fictional tale by Hideyoshi.
This man, Akechi Kenzaburou is the author of this manga! He is assisted by the artist Todou Yutaka.
Story. 7/10
I wanted to give this story an 8 or 9 because it is so interesting. As fiction it is amaaaazing! But the author seems to have a conflict of interest here. He is a descendant of Mitsuhide and so he is portrayed as a great hero in this story. He does everything gracefully, quotes wisdom of Wuzi and Sun Tzu. He is loved by Nobunaga.
And Hideyoshi is shown as a jealous scheming lord. I don’t like this aspect of the manga. It feels a little bit like propaganda. I wish it was more impartial.
Nevertheless, it is very enjoyable.
Art. 8/10
I really like the art. The characters are drawn well. This style is very suitable for fight scenes.
Characters. 7/10
I don’t know which character is show correctly as per history, but they seem to be shown well. Nobunaga can be cruel, but he is in general a kind and ambitious man.
Mitsuhide is shown as an old wise guy, who is also able to win at sumo. Truly well rounded. The Ashikaga shogun is shown as a puppet, which makes sense, as he was the last of the Ashikaga lineage.
Overall. 7/10
The man who killed Nobunaga! This is a very interesting read. I have only read 7 chapters that I could find, I’m waiting for more. Very enjoyable.
Not recommended for romance, comedy, shonen.
Highly recommended for seinen, war, action, history.
Go and check it out.
Thank you for reading!
