Synopsis

During the Meiji period, this story centers around an unsuccessful science fiction author who masquerades as the dead son of an industrial magnate. With his new family's riches, he creates a fantastical island to satisfy his desires.

In his manga adaptation of The Strange Tale of Panorama Island (panorama-tou kidan), Maruo strays from his usual style of explicit gore while maintaining his trademark: elaborate, elegant art.
Sprawling, overwhelming landscapes, a diverse range of uniquely designed characters, and even scenes distorted grotesquely for effect are captured with ease by the talented and experienced mangaka.

Background

Panorama Toukitan is an adaptation of the Edogawa Ranpo novella of the same name. The manga won the New Artist Prize at the 13th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2009.

The series was published in English as The Strange Tale of Panorama Island by Last Gasp on July 1, 2013. The English version was nominated for Best Adaptation from Another Medium at the 2014 Eisner Awards.

The Strange Tale of Panorama Island was originally written by Edogawa Rampo, the godfather of Japanese detective stories, and is here adapted into a comic by autuer of jigoku manga, Suehiro Maruo. The story, set in 1920’s Japan, is about a man who steals the fortune and identity from a recently deceased, incredibly wealthy industrialist and the events that unfold afterwards.

It's hard to make me impressed to the point of leaving me speechless. This jaw-dropping manga, however, is one of works of art that managed to do it. I will try to explain why in this short review.
