So after finishing up the first issue, I'd figure I would give my two cents in on what I think, is a pretty nice twist on the mahou shoujo genre. "Machigatta Ko wo Mahou Shoujo ni Shiteshimatta" or "Machimaho: I Messed Up and Turned the Wrong Person Into a Magical Girl!" (I swear these long titles are really starting to wear on me) is something that is trying to break the mold of the traditional magical girl tropes...kinda.

While it does contain a lot of the things we are used to seeing when it comes to contemporary magical girl motifs Machimaho tries to take these elements ... and have fun with them. One of the major changes in this series is the fact that the MC who we are used to seeing as the perfect, well-rounded Mary Sue is now a foul-mouthed, cigarette smokin, delinquent. Majiba is the type of shoot first don't ask questions later anti-hero type who doesn't care who she has to hurt to get what she wants. Even with all that she still makes good grades in school and even protects her friends showing that she does have somewhat of a good heart and not just your typical stone-cold sociopath. I'm hoping that the author continues to flesh out her personality as the series continues.

The plot itself is really simple to follow. If you've read or seen any type of mahou shoujo series ever Machimaho's story pretty much follows the same formula for the most part which is fine for me because most of the focus seems to be more on the humor then any actual plot and man does it show. A lot of the jokes in just the first issue had my gut bustin. There was never really a dull moment and I'm hoping this streak continues for the rest of the series.

Overall from what I see right now, Machimaho is a type of WYSIWYG series. With a name like "I Messed Up and Turned the Wrong Person Into a Magical Girl!" you pretty much know what you're getting into. It knows what it's trying to do and I respect it for that. If you're looking for a satirical take on the magical girl formula then this is the manga for you. Even if you're not into the whole mahou shoujo thing I still recommend it just for the humor alone.

You're gonna have to buy the manga in stores, because there's only one chapter online. I expected a joke manga and what I got was that and a lil more. It starts as a simple gag about a magical girl that is the farthest thing from a magical girl. With fights that are one punch man style, in that she's so strong she clobbers demons with her bare fists, doesn't even need to transform. Add in a couple extra characters for some humorous interaction and you get a gag manga with low lying shounen themes.

My final word is I'm interested in reading more and ... I am saddened there aren't any other chapters online. Because the first volume ended in the middle of an actually engaging fight.

Edit years later: The biggest issue with this series is the wait times between volume releases. The mangaka is a prolific scanlation hater so the only way to read this series is to by the physical volume. But the publishing company is taking their dear sweet time. Some releases are almost a year apart. It's especially sad as there have been some great developments that really make me want to keep reading, but I can't.

This is my first review, so please bear with me. May contain a few spoilers. Here we go!

Machimaho is an... interesting manga to say the least. It takes the standard tropes and stereotypes from magical girl manga and throws it into... another manga, except the main character, Kayo, is the worst magical girl imaginable.

The story of this manga isn't the best in the beginning, but towards the third volume, larger plot points are introduced that make the story more enjoyable.

The art in this manga is very much so a hidden gem. With many of my other favorites, I have found myself attracted to manga that has unique art. Machimaho is no exception. The art never fails to impress me. It even looks remarkable in the short, three panel fights, which make the longer fights even more visually appealing.

Characters: 6

The characters in this manga are, for the most types, stereotypical tropes, with the exception of Kayo. The sort of "bad-girl" stereotype has been used a lot in manga, but Kayo fits the role perfectly. On the outside, her character is the very definition of a villain, or at the very least a bad person. Throughout the progression of the story though, Kayo starts to show protective feelings towards those around her, and considers them friend's. At one point, she even cracks and admits her faults. Her development is by far the best out of all the character's.

Enjoyment: 10

Enjoyment is a though category to nail in manga. Use too much humor, and it seems unnatural, use too little and you bore the reader. However, this is the category that Machimaho excels in. It's humor is well put together, and the character's all play a factor in that humor. Each of their stereotypes, surprisingly, fit together perfectly to create a very humorous setting. I found myself laughing and giggling throughout the manga, despite some of the humor being corny for the simple reason that it fits so very well with the characters.

Overall: 8

While Machimaho has some faults, it makes up for it with the amazing art and humor. If you're a fan of humor and good art- and also don't mind some ecchi scenes, then Machimaho is perfect for you.

It is a rare thing for me to laugh reading a manga. This manga actually kept me entertained and laughing. It's amazing and funny. This manga is graphic and has a bit of sexual content but if you're ok with that I recommend this. Alright so is it for you?

The story is about a magical being who wanted to give the magical girl's power to someone and quickly. As he ... saw a cute girl walking by, he gave her the powers thinking she was a perfect candidate and as soon as he did that, he regretted it. The girl was a delinquent, strong, not well-mannered smoker who didn't fit the magical girl stereotype at all. This story introduces along the way a Yankee guy, another magical girl and a bunch of other fun characters.
(Also, on the second volume, I loved the Dragonball reference!)

Most of the other reviews are short, were made based on only the first chapter, or didn't provide much information on what the series is actually like. It's still publishing (volume 7 is out, I've read up to volume 6) so I'll do my best to talk about it up to that point.

The humor in this series is something you're either going to love or hate. There's a ton of jokes about smoking, physical violence, and absurd (almost childish) types of jokes. Our main character is an asshole who very, very rarely shows signs of being a good person (and even when they do, ... it's kind of suspicious). She bullies everyone around her but also shows signs of actually liking her only friend. She is a heavy smoker, and a ton of jokes are centered around her being addicted to it. Moreover, there's a ton of fan service and skimpy outfits, along with panty shots galore. What I'm trying to say is that it's extremely edgy, but for me at least, most of the jokes land.

The art deserves its own section. If I'm being completely honest, it's some of the best I've seen. Backgrounds are beautifully rendered, and the action scenes are utterly fantastic. In the first couple of volumes, it was mainly about the fight scenes and gags, but now there's an actual story and some mysteries (why does she have an underground bunker? What's the deal with her dad? What happened to her to make her so pessimistic?) are actually presented and I feel that at least a couple of them will be discussed in later volumes.

If you want to see if this manga is for you then read volume one. If you like the art, the general premise, or the humor, you will probably enjoy this series. If you're scoffing at it as you read in utter disgust, you will get nothing out of this series. My take, however, is that it's a fantastic satire on magical girls and a stupid, yet somewhat charming story about interesting characters. I would recommend it to someone who's feeling adventurous.

this manga is trying to break mahou shoujo stereotypes by making the Main Character the opposite in personality compared to the averge prissy "kawaii" type. There is only one chapter as I write this but I fear this archetype may be a bit exaggerated. I personally found little about it to be memorable nor did I find myself checking for the next chapter. The mahou shoujo lane isn't necessarily competitive but there's just many.... familiar concepts being used, making it a pool almost too large to find anything worth while. I'm sure the ratings will speak to the mangaka and he will definitely change his ... approach.

I bought the first volume on a whim, it seemed like it could be pretty funny. After finishing the first volume I was actually disappointed in myself for not grabbing a few more. It is as funny as a manga like Konosuba and the action is very well drawn. Easy to follow story and the characters are great. I could honestly see this getting an anime one day. I can't wait to buy the other volumes and catch up on this amazingly hilarious story. At the time of review, there are 7 volumes out I believe. The deconstruction of the magical girl genre has never ... been this funny. What Madoka Magica did to make magical girls dark this manga turns up to 11, and the dark humor is the best I have seen in a manga like this. In fact, the only manga I have ever seen do dark humor better is Chainsaw Man.
