Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de 2-kai Kougeki no Okaasan wa Suki desu ka? was one of the winners of the 29th Fantasia Taisho contest. As a part of the book promotion, retail store Animate awarded customers who brought their mothers to the store with a 16-page short story booklet.
Well, this is quite something.
I've only read the first volume, but this seems pretty interesting and funny so far.
Instead of having the protagonist and the main heroine get together, the protagonist and main heroine are son and mother, which leads to some pretty awkward situations that would be considered good in other stories.
For example, there is a scene where the main character is in the bath with three other girls, on of them being his mom. In normal one guy, multiple girls Light Novel, this would mean the begining of a harem, but not here. Since one of the girls is his mother, for as
much as the guy wants to look, there's no way for him to do so.
The story also explores a unsual concept, the main character relationship with his mother. Depending on how this is taken, it could lead to a pretty interesting story development.
Anyways, I plan to read more of this and hope this review got you interested enough in this Light Novel.
(BTW, for those who are wondering, no, there is no incest in this and it doesn't seem like there will be. Though the mother has a lot of scenes that makes it feel like she's a harem member on a ecchi story)
A super beautiful mom and her tsundere son plays a fantasy game together. Sounds pretty interesting, yes?
Story: The Government created a game called MMMMMORPG (yes, all those M's are correct) to strengthen the bond between mothers and sons, probably. That's it.
Art: The Mother is indeed very beautiful, but overall the quality is a bit low. But light novels have few illustrations.
Characters: Gaaaah!!! The Mother x Son combo was so appealing, but the Son is a tsundere (too shy, so he's mean instead of being honest) while the mom is a deredere. (super nice and sweet). This makes the story stagnate really fast,
passing it of as comedy. Since the mom and son both are too silly to actually be serious.
Then we have the standard loli girls, who does NOT belong in a story that fans bought because of a Mom character (mature, older woman). What fan-base were these characters made for? I do want to point out, that the Son initially picked two girls over 18 to be in his party, and they were interesting. But the mother would not accept them, so after just one page of hope, they were replaced by lolis. And that was when I lost all interest for this series...
Overall. I won't lie, I'm her for the hot mother. I thought since it's a fantasy world (it's not) and they are not blood relatives (surprisingly, they are), something interesting might happen. The Son himself thinks his Mom is too damn beautiful and cute to see her as a mother, still nothing close to interesting is between them. With a story that's really mediocre, characters that you can find literally anywhere, and comedy not quite good enough to make you laugh, I just can't help but to feel the author didn't have the skill to match the idea. I've seen brother x sister stories all the time, so I assumed this too was gonna be an guilty-pleasure story, but those expectations were crushed far too soon.
I do have to mention that the manga version is good. The art's always showing the beautiful mother, the facial expressions makes it a lot funnier than just reading, and it's simply a better fit with manga rather than novels for this story. You might like this story, and I won't blame you, but I shall move on to something else.
