I stumbled across a screenshot of this manga on social media, and so I did what usually do at 3 am when I find a promising manga - I binged the entire thing in one sitting.

And holy shit was that an incredible read. Where do I begin?

Enter Kusunoki, a man with nothing to lose, nor anything to gain in his life - and in a couple hasty decisions that no sane person would usually make, he puts a ticking time bomb on his life for a small wad of cash - but again, he's got nothing to lose, nor anything to gain, so fuck ... it, right?

Accompanied by Miagi, a observer of sorts, the unlikely duo, struggle to find what makes them happiest in their newly shortened lives. The growth both subject and observer experience makes you cheer them on in every page of this 16 chapter saga.

No complaints art-wise. It's certainly not the best, but it still drives the story in very well.

It's just a really heart-filling manga, a perfect depiction of "don't cry because it's over - smile because it happened."

To the point - this manga is very different from what the story looks like at the first glance.
Money, time, sold lifespan all of these are symbols used by the author to tell the story.

The actual story is nothing but the imagination of MC. The first 2 chapters where the author introduce us with MC and leads him to Miyagi are the introduction - a love story between the two starts there when he meets Miyagi and she gives him 300k. The money should be ... interpreted as value. Basically what it means that he met the girl and she evaluated him. His world changed suddenly, and his worth too, remember that before that his life felt worthless - the apartment of his is pretty much shows his selfworth, its empty, depressing, he is alone, without much of point living, but once he meets Miyagi, she comes to his apartment, as if she comes inside his head and never leaves him alone.

Later she moves in to his apartment to watch him and evaluate him, based on her evaluation his worth might change.
At this point the Miyagi that enters his apartment and values his daily life is nothing more than a fantasy of his. He likes her, and he is constantly imagining her by his side whenever he does something. She also writes stuff about him on the notebook. It means that he is constantly thinking about how she would react to his actions if she were with him. This is pretty much the though process of what we all have when we find a person that we like.

So all these chapters in between chapter 2 and chapter 16 are happening inside MC`s head. Remember, no one can see her but MC, she is not real, its his imagination of what she would look like next besides him, what would they do together, where would they go, what would they talk about, what would they show each other etc...

The story evolves further and further covering his childhood promise to his first friend about how they would become couple when they hit 20 years mark. I believe this scene was real life, they met so he could tell her that he found the right person and she wouldn`t wait for him. Further on we see him act in public as if she is there beside him, but this is pretty much MC overcoming his fear of embarrassment of holding hand with girl in public, at first we see people treating him badly because of it, but later on they accept him, and I think this is only the thoughts of his, at first he thinks it would be embarrassing and people would judge them in many ways, but later on those thoughts disappear. We see this completely at chapter 16, when finally they meet in real life again to actually go on their date.

I think this story show us the moment they meet, then it proceeds to show us what the MC is thinking when he is falling in love with her. And at the last chapter the story show us that they become the couple and go on the date.
3 months I believe is the period between him meeting her and finally mustering courage of inviting her on a date. So this manga is about that 3 month period and the though process behind it. How he changes and how his idea of life changes. The 300k that she gave him was basically the purpose and love, which led him to his change, the 30 years of his future, was only the comparison of what would his life have been if he didint take that money - basically didin`t met her.

The last chapter also mentions that she also sold her lifespan to go out with him for those 3 days. But this only shows that both of them sacrificed one of their possible future outcomes to stay with each other instead.

I've never written a single review ever. I've watched and read loads of stuff but i mostly refrain from doing stuff like this. I'm just not good with words i guess. So i'm gonna say this beforehand, this isn't gonna be comprehensive review about this manga, rather it's gonna be about how i came to read this and how the me who just finished this manga minutes ago is feeling. I woke up this morning from a really bad dream. Ever since waking up i just felt like dropping everything and going off somewhere without a destination. I just felt empty. Just logged into MAL ... for a routine check. Then i by some miracle stumbled upon this absolute gem of a manga. I thought why not give it a try cause it's just 18 chapters. My decision was a well taken one. I haven't cried buckets like this from a manga in quite a while. I finished it within an hour. In my entire life i've never not felt empty from finishing a manga, especially a short one like this. And given that i was already feeling empty prior to reading this, i wasn't expecting anything new. But i came out from this crying but somehow feeling very refreshed. I really value my life more now. This wasn't just a good read, this was a profound experience .

When I started reading this manga, I just thought it would be about a self deprecating man cursing his life for turning out the way it did and then miraculously learn from his mistakes and one thing afyer the other he would be getting a second chance at life
Gladly it didnt turn out that way.....Sure kusunoki was a useless bum at the start but after coming to terms with everything that happened after he sold his life I truly liked the fact that he just didnt care what others thought of him after a while and did what he wanted
The chemistry between the two characters ... was something that for kept me going through this otherwise depressing story.....they both became irreplaceable existences for each other.....Reading this manga really made me think that just knowing that you are gonna die changes your outlook on life so much and it gave me this renewed feeling that "Yes I am alive, nothing's gonna change if I don't will it to change"
Anyways I've blabbered on for too long but I'll say that I totally recommend this manga to y'all reading this. It will for sure change your outlook on life

Greatly recommended, this made me realize life's worth, you can have a long lifespan with useless things to do, or a short but a meaningful one. Remember to make a good decision on your life when you can, you never will know when you will die, or useless.

This story "Three days of Happiness" / Jumyou wo Kaitotte Moratta. Ichinen ni Tsuki, Ichimanen de. ( I sold my life for ten thousand yen per year. ) is a depression type of manga, for ... some people will made you realize how your decisions can affect your life path. In my opinion from long time ago, life is complicated, people won't know the "true" meaning of life, is it to do good things, to have fun, to accomplish something or to make some sort of history in this world. You might be here reading manga, watching movies, and having fun, thinking that life is all fun and games ( for some n actually few people ), thinking that you can change your life with just a few years, completely reversing the current state of your life path, but can you ?

This manga will make you realize the hardships / fun things of life, whether even a slight of things can increase your dopamine ( fun chemical stuffs released to make you feel good / well ), or even a slight of things can change your life altogether. It might be only 16 chapters ( not including the extra chapters / only the main chapters ), however this can greatly tells a lot of story about someone's life.
Whether Kusunoki or Miyagi life, how similar they are in some cases, and how they respond to each of their problems

The ending could be a little bit problematic, not really telling the future events, and just stopping by. However, me here, not trying to accept this kind of ending since I started watching anime / manga, it has some sort of mystery and how you can imagine the rest yourself, how this kind of mystery will greatly make you immersed to the story more and more.
P.S. Ending is kinda like Death Note, if you watch it / read the manga already.

Its depressing, it's still a good one!

The question "how much is life really worth" is and will be a ubiquitous question that is uttered in many institutions, media, and circles. Even in it's most primitive state in the form of several "would you rather" or dilemma questions, the question seems to be so widely used that it's hard to really understand the weight of of the question itself.

With it being as short as 16 chapters, this manga materializes this popular question into an actual concept that follows our main character. Dealing with themes of retrospection and a person's potential, this story illustrates a wonderful depiction of how everyday people overestimate how ... happy they can be in a year, and underestimate how happy they can be in just a few days.

One of the most beautiful stories I have read so far, I will refrain from running my mouth (fingers) and instead insist you use an hour or two of your time to read it!

First i read this manga i think what's the point of making this manga have Psychological genre. Sometimes i think about writing story too and this manga has what i think about story that i wrote. This is kind of like same thought. Then i was really impressed how that this story done through. But still, i feels bad for Himeno seriously.

Story :

I'm just tell that the storymaking is almost same as i thought, So that was certain that make me impressed.

Art :

Just like some of good drawing in my opinion.

... Character :

This is the point that i feel the same thought as mine. It's the childhood friend. Little bit weird? but that it is. The childhood friend is like lonely after they separated from each other and then she send the letter about asking for a help. But the main character was thought she was just making sense of him. And then she thought he was dismissed her then she desperate till her end her life. This is really the same as I thought. But still, i feels bad for her.

Enjoyment :

I really do enjoy the story so much because i always thinking about what the way that the writer thinks and that's always make me surprised.

Overall :

This is the one of the best manga i ever read and i hope anyone feels the same way i feel impressed about this manga.

Found this when going down the MAL top manga that isn't too long but shorter ones to read. Been trying to read ones that never got anime adaptation as I don't have a lot of manga on my list. And boy was I glad I found this one.

What would you do with the time you have remaining? Knowing not how much time we have left, I was glad I could've read this beautiful story that deals with such. If you love romance and just want a good sweet story with a lot of feels, I would say this is one to pick up. I ... don't like reading manga that much until just this year, I started picking them up and this has become one of my favorite. I've been buying a lot of manga too but sadly there's no hard copy for this one.

As a person who's 35 as I was reading this, I wonder what have I've done with my life in these 35 years? Is it worth much at all? We all sure sometimes ponder such a thought and question of what is my value? And this portray it in the most beautiful way possible with two stranger on a journey to finding meaning to their existence.

What is the one thing that can give our life meaning? It is to be able to love and be loved. I believe by knowing that, we have a reason to wake up in the morning and make the other person happy. Even if others think we're crazy for loving someone, love is pretty crazy.

So I would say, this has become one of my favorite manga and I do hope you pick it up. I was skeptical at first but by the end, I was in loved with it. Since the title didn't really catch my attention but since it wasn't long I could do it in one go. TOTALLY WORTH!

Manga is literature ~Natsuki

The superiority of quality over quantity is described not only by the story, but even at the meta level, being only 18 chapters, or 16 if not counting the extras. Clear and concise chapters, not necessarily brimming with story or art, but having a perfect balance between positive and negative space; Masterpiece would not be the best term for it, rather a flower blooming just before it wilts, throughout its short life producing an immense amount of beauty. Similarly, through its storytelling, the manga portrays the beauty of simplicity, but beyond that, human connection. In psychology, the Self Determination Theory states that ... humans have the three basic needs of Autonomy, Competence and Relatedness. Without these, humans struggle to stabilise and to the best of their abilities try to rectify the lack thereof, but on the other hand, wouldn't achieving these goals would be the epitome of a human life?

Please read 寿命を買い取ってもらった。一年につき、一万円で。It won't take long, but is worth the while.

Kusunoki x miyagi OTP

Ranked 35th highest rated manga on MAL, I decided to give this a shot at only 18 chapters. Here is my review:

Story: The story is very good, I scored it an 8. Since this is such a highly rated manga, I'll focus on why I only scored it an 8 and not a 10 like most other reviewers. First, at 18 chapters, it could have been a little bit longer, and developed the relationship between the two characters a bit more, or delve into each others emotions about the people in their past. I thoroughly enjoyed how the author brought the two together, and the ... plot made it a page turner. When I read the ending, I knew some people probably felt short changed, but I actually really liked it. It left me wanting more, but as the observer isn't with the subject for its last 3 days, neither was the reader. But it's a great ending.

Art: The art is very subtle, and very nicely drawn. The facial expressions of Miyagi were spot on for how she is written, and I could almost hear what she would sounds like. The backgrounds of the scenes are drawn well, and there are a lot of scenes with a great amount of detail. It almost feels like the scenes were pulled from a larger production like a movie or show.

Character: Great, I scored this a 9. To be totally honest, it would have been a 10 if there was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster regarding the plot of the story... Coming to the realization of death should have been slightly more emotional, but there were moments where the characters sort of show them having this dark, manic episode before pulling themselves together and continuing with their week. But I love how subtle, how non-over-the-top they were with each other, and that is exactly how the character is written. It kept the characters believable.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this quite a bit. It's a lovely story, and I recommend it. It's only 18 chapters, which includes 2 half chapters. I hope this develops into a movie one day. Still not sure how it isn't yet.

Short but sweet manga on what value your life holds.
Advice to readers that aren't gna read the whole thing: savour the read, don't speed through it.

Story: Interesting hook that lead to a story with quite the melancholic feels. Pretty solid story that had its ups and downs.

Art: It wasn't anything special but I felt like the style fit the narrative quite well. Looking back, many of the frames were blank backgrounds but maybe that actually fits the story more contextually, as it is a character driven story with where they are located less important.

Character: MC is probably relatable to some degree. Hard ... to be completely relatable but you might find at least one aspect of either the MC or the female MC you can relate to. Makes them all the more real.

Enjoyment: 16 chapters is easy to binge and that is what I did. I recommend that you take it slow though, as this isn't some 300 chapter shonen that you can skip half of the fight scenes. Play some nice piano BGM while relaxing. Savour the story. It'll be worth it.

Overall: Masterpiece.

Jumyou wo Kaitotte Marotta certainly isn't an easy read. At least not for me.

And not because of it's many flaws, which if you'd want to be cynical, you will find it easy to criticise Jumyou wo Kaitotte Marotta with. The art for the most part isn't too great, though there are some beautiful pages, the writing at times rather clumsy, though that might be in part due to translation. But in the end, in my opinion, these arguments kinda miss the mark. What sets this manga apart is it's story.

And the story most certainly is unique. And not just the premise, which, honestly, in ... the book is just as contrived and unexplainable as it sounds in the title. How the story unfolds from that point onwards though is where this manga shines. And while the core thread is surprisingly traditional, it is the unusual context and the rather nihilistic and philosophical musings that elevate it beyond what you usually would find in manga.

I can not promise that you will enjoy this manga, since I'm sure it requires a certain kind of mindset to really engage with. But if you happen to be this kind of person, I promise, while it might not make you directly happy, it certainly will have an emotional impact. Though if you are looking for some light entertainment or something with a clear bottom line message, I don't think you will find it in Jumyou wo Kaitotte Marotta.

*A tale of simplicity pursing the meaning of life in a dull and mundane way. 'I sold my life for 10,000 yen per year' explains the life of the main protagonist, Kusunoki, in the aim of trying to send a message to ther reader about the meaning of life? But, as the title says, is life really worth 10,000 yen per year?
* The protagonist is lost in the complicated youth age. Trying to make decisions, but ultimately failing at every aspect of his life (money, relationships, and career-success). He is someone who has already surrendered and is broken from the inside and outside with ... no purpose in life. So, selling his upcoming 30 years and living aimlessly in 3 months seems like the best decision for him.
* The story follows a decent narrative until he meets his childhood crush where she confesses her despise for him and that leaves him no one to love or worth meeting anymore, or perhaps he did not even try to contact anyone else. Then, barely anything worth mentions as the story progressive from this point onward. The main character is more self-isolated in nihilism and tries to find the last rays of hope and meaning by loving someone who he just meet in 3 months.
* The main issued here is that is our life really worth living a few days of happiness at the expense of upcoming 30 years? Or is not he supposed to direct himself to a better way and try to change things for the better?

Life can be really hard with you but there's always something or someone that will give you a reason to smile at the end

Story: 2020 and this masterpiece still doesn't have a movie/anime, this manga is just beautiful and heartbreaking. When you start to read it you might think "uh yes, he just wants to die okay" but the more you read it, it gets more wholesome. This is not a only a love story, is also a heart warming.

Characters: The relationship between the two characters it's well written, they just met like nothing but the development comes through when they answer just ... simple questions about each other life and it just feels so natural to see them how they fall in love.

Art: The art is good enough for the story, it can be simple in some moments but when it comes to those moments it's really beautiful

Enjoyment: I loved it and i cried a whole ocean while reading it, when i finished i just keep staring just asking myself "Now what?". This manga gave me the same feeling when i read Solanin and Aku no Hana, it's just great

Overall: Just read it, don't hesitate

Spoiler free! A somewhat light-hearted tragedy. I originally found this because it was under recommendations for Oyasumi Pun Pun and while I do agree they are both tragedies, this is way less bleak (which is good imo). While you know MC’s days are dwindling down, it isn’t an oppressive feeling because he’s actually pretty happy all things considered. Bittersweet ending, bordering more on sweet than bitter. Made my stomach flip once or twice but got through with dry eyes.

The art is pretty simple, but I think it was effective enough to tell the story it wanted to tell. This was also a super fast read, ... I got through it in effectively an afternoon. I think manga was the perfect format for this — it isn’t super visually stimulating to warrant an anime, and the amount of dialogue vs everything else would make a pretty tiresome light novel.

There isn't much to say here. I'll keep it short and sweet just like the manga. The manga gets you thinking a little bit, and the story is not so much as important as the message. This may be a slight spoiler but there is romance involved so the only criteria for my recommendation really is if you are looking for a slice-of-life/drama/romance/philosophical manga. It's more so philosophy (what is the meaning of life/what does it mean to be alive/what makes life worth living) rather than psychology. If any of that sounds interesting to you, you gotta give this a go. It is only 18 ... chapters and it was a fairly quick read. The characters are beautiful and I am sure that you will be able to relate to them on some level even if you are totally different. For me personally, I really found the story touching and fell in love with the characters and related to them on an emotional level. But don't just take my word for it, the light novel is ranked 18th on MAL for highest rated manga the manga adaptation (what i'm currently reviewing) is ranked 33rd while being 62nd most popular. The hype is real, as you will find in other reviews, not just mine. Unless you are some sort of edgelord elitist who hates romance/SOL/drama, this is a must read and a touching story for anybody, of all ages, ethnicities, genders, and backgrounds. Masterpiece. 10/10

I personally go around living life having constructed elaborate defenses around my psyche, allowing me to brush away any emotional attacks on my identity. I am pretty sure most of you do that as well, unconsciously atleast. Rarely I come across this kind of a book that suddenly hits home. It felt I had been surprised, I did not know that gap in my defenses existed.

I won't lie, this book felt like a personal attack on me sometimes. I do spend a lot of my time consuming art, rarely producing anything of worth. I don't set many goals so that I won't be dissapointed when ... I fail to even try to achieve them. For a person like me, this book made me wonder what my life is worth.

In that sense, this book is dark. It makes you ask these important questions that might for atleast a few of you, be the trigger that pushes you to try dreaming and acting on your passions.

I think some parts of this manga went over my head (vending machines, simply meaninglessness). But I think it was trying to make us question some of the most fundamental axioms we all hold dear. What is meaningful to us? what makes something meaningful?

This work is short and its hard to justify these kinds of passionate deep emotions in such a short time, really flesh out characters. Within the constraints the author did a fine job.

The ending is poetic and kinda clearly makes the point that value is truly subjective. I am still holding onto the idea that being sort of eternal through your Art is valuable. But this book forced me acknowledge that my wish is as arbitary as wishing for wealth, fame etc. I would recommend this book since its a short read and its not too dark overall.

This is one of those kinds of manga where it'll hit the person reading it in different spots depending on where they are in life. If you're doing great, then this will manga will make you want to strive for more and live a fuller life. If you're doing miserable, this will make you think about all the 'what ifs' of tomorrow and would likely go on to base of inspiration, and can even cause mass introspection on the reader.
I strongly recommend this to anyone who's struggling in particular, as the depiction of this manga of what it's like to give up on life, and ... it's discussing on the change of hearth that occurs if you *knew* how long you had to live and what happens in your final days is done beautifully, albeit with the constant tinge of melancholy.
Ultimately, it's a relatively short read so there's not much excuse not to give it a go, and I'd say it has a lot of potential for re-readability when times get tough.

Do your best for yourself but look around too.

I didn’t think these 18 chapters would hit me so hard, the relation between Kusunoki and Miyagi is so gentle but also so tender, they’re both in some kind of pain, lost in their own lives, without no one to rely. The rules about selling your life span isn’t really clear so you kind of feel tense about it, who buys it?

At first, I thought that this story was a tragedy, but that was just an idea of what happiness is, after thinking about it, doesn’t matter how much it hurts, having someone to feel that ... pain with you, is what I think truly happiness is.

This manga will make you think a lot about your life and your future, people that are around you and what you are to them. Value your moments of happiness!

I am going to be rather short for this one.

There comes a time where a work of art just brings this ever-swirling vortex of emotion or thoughts into being. When the last page transpired before my eyes I was simply astounded inside, not the kind of awe you get from something exhilarating or inspiring, but rather, it leaves a truth that we should all etch into our minds : Life is shorter than we think. Every second can be endowed with endless possibilities. In a span of time so short, one can achieve more than he/she can even think of, even if it would ... be a day, a week, or a mere month.

If you can come to appreciate the value of time, maybe you can reach a point of enlightenment and change your life completely. After all, we should live our days like our last.

No money can buy a single second of time. Be happy guys. Create your happiness. Spend time with your friends or family. If you don't have friends, try to make some, even if it's just one. Get someone you can be close and open with. Seek opportunity in every difficulty, because simply casing those mistakes away does not equate to success.
