It is quite different from the first manga and anime adaptation. The adaptation was almost whimsical, and nearly calm.
This, though? This is DARK. I've seen 18 chapters so far, it looks like the author is weaving the plot, mixing menacing, deranged or villainous characters with very stereotypical anime/manga behaviors. So you can have a total lunatic from protagonist side doing something cruel offscreen, or people getting stabbed onscreen, and then someone goes into chibi mode and starts impersonation of a pouting hamster.
All I can say that the resulting work is very odd, but at the same time it is quite different from anything else.
...
For some reason it reminds me of "Somali to Mori" in places, with the dark part that wasn't present in Somali.
There's an overarching plot, but so far it is unclear where it is going. The art is delightful (especially compared to low detail anime adaptation which had very cheap backgrounds), characters are drawn well, and it is pleasant to read. The mix of serious tone with stereotypes is also interesting, but the result is not for everybody.
I'd say this is largely worth reading if you enjoyed Black Joke, Murcielago, although this title does not have that level of gore, and I don't really recall "onscreen" sexual content. This also does not really feel like shounen title either. So, basically a darker fantasy world where stereotypical behavior is mixed with serious tropes.
I'd recommend to check it out.
6/10 story, 7/10 art, 6/10 character, 6/10 enjoyment, 6/10 overall.
