Synopsis

Cécile Gagnier is a tour guide at the Louvre Museum in Paris. While presenting the famous Mona Lisa painting, Cécile spots a little white cat in the crowd.

Snowbébé is the white cat Cécile saw, living at the Louvre with a small feline colony. Despite the other cats being harsh and cold toward him, Snowbébé believes it is better than being out on the street. Curiously, he has not grown beyond being a kitten, but he possesses a mysterious power—he can hide inside the Louvre's paintings.

Marcel is a man who has been a nighttime security guard at the Louvre his whole life. As children, Marcel and his sister would play at the museum; during their visits, she would tell him she could hear the voices of the paintings. But shortly after, his sister disappeared in a cloud of mystery and Marcel has been searching for her ever since.

Soon, these three lives are destined to collide in a way none of them would have ever imagined.

Taiyou Matsumoto's artistic craft crystallizes in high definition the expansive world of paintings mirroring a child's limitless imagination with consistency in quality, witnessed most evident during the stretch towards the end of the final volume. Cats of the Louvre's art style mixes the sharpness of felines with the texture and feel of the lines; the grip of a child's developing hands seen in the depiction of statures in every page and the wiggliness of the edges of the panel; all embraced by the care of visual arts. Although this is my first Matsumoto manga to date, I find his way with the pen quite charming ...

Where do we draw the line between realities - our own, those around us and, eventually, the reality of the world as a whole? Can they ever be really separated or are they all connected by some intangible threads, each pulling the other one as it moves?

Story:

This is an extraordinarily deep story found in the most unlikely of places. Despite it's length, nothing is ever rushed or not explained enough. The narrative seems divided into stories, each relating to a certain character and/or event, through which we are given the backstories and flashbacks that gradually come together neatly. The progression is fluid enough, it peaks ...

Mixed Feelings
From the creator of Tekkonkrinkreet, this manga is filled with the author's unique character designs. Something I found interesting is that there is a clear improvement in art as the manga progresses. To be honest, I wasn't too big a fan of some of the faces and how inconsistent they could be in the beginning, but this isn't too big of an issue later on.

In my opinion, some of the artwork especially towards the middle and end is especially breathtaking and surreal. My two favorite (and in my opinion most interesting) designs are the cats Snowbebe and Sawtooth. Some of my favorite art in the ...
