Lungs blacker than a coal miner.
Ridiculous premise, ridiculous world. Very little happened in the first episode.

Was expecting something darker in vibe.
Didn't really like it. The doll was cute but her clumsiness annoyed me. Wanted to give up halfway through. Will probably watch one more episode still cause I'm still curious about the others.

Was strangely less dark than I took from what looked that would be. The whole episode I thought "something horrible will happen".

Of course that this anime can be about kidnapping children to slave them. If my interpretation of the beginning is right.

so far this series is pretty weird and fun, nothing too crazy but it's okay.

i really hope there is a twist or something, like yeah shadows and dolls slice of life isn't that bad but give us evil like that girl before the ED, speaking of the ED tho i liked it a lot! maybe one of the best this season?

Hmmm a pretty surreal idea for a story. It seems pretty dark (pun aside) under the surface despite painting it as light hearted for the introduction.

It seems to me that those living dolls are not actually dolls but humans (if hunger is anything to go by), and the stuff they drank at the beginning seemed suspicious as well.

Not to mention there was a scene where it seemed like someone turned into a shadowy figure.

Definitely will be keeping an eye on this.

Off to a very good start!
I wasn't expecting the intro to show that many shadows, I wonder if there are already plans for a second cour.

This was pretty awesome! I enjoyed the animation and OP/ED. Watching this was a friend was really enjoyable because there's some nice foreshadowing going on that added some nice touches if you know what's going to happen.

I'm curious to see how more anime-onlys are going to react to this. I feel like original stuff and the structuring of the opening would help ease things along if they continue at this pace.

Only things I personally disliked is Emilyko being called Emilico.

Really solid adaptation. They did a great job capturing the theme of the manga, with the ambiance and the atmosphere. However, the soundtrack is average.

I liked the lingering creepy, mysterious atmosphere the episode had despite how bubbly and obnoxious the doll was. It worked in making me intrigued to know more about the world, and how and if it'll get darker later. Though I don't want to trust Cloverworks so soon after last season's disappointments, I feel there's good potential here, but maybe I'm just being hyped up the crazy good OP and ED, which are both the top contenders for my favorite ones for spring season.

Is this Shadow family a coal supplier? Got a stupid impression from the frst scene and shoveling that their residue seems like coal and it's being used for trains lol

Excellent closing theme with ReoNa

It will be difficult to treat a child servant issue with the progressive vibe, but at least in Japan it is not as advanced as in the West

The quality is fine, it is almost at the level of Black Clover, let's see how this anime develops!

I loved the ed too, but the instrumental op isn't so bad either!

also what do you mean, evil, it's a precious cinammon roll! Look at this adorable face radiating kindness and warmth!

Aw sweet. The shadow Kate was not an angry master afterall, considering her va also the cute one. Now that was surely a nice attraction. Not gonna mentioned her living doll maid, called Emiliko. Even though Emiliko was clumsy af, but her cheerful and positive attitude really bring a better mood. So, i really think, They still can make such a good combination. I can see an adorable chemistry dynamic between them in these first episode.

But, well, this show really give me such a strange vibes, even from this premiere. Despite having a wholesome moment surrounding Emiliko cheerful first circle of lifes as Kate's maid. Idk if she was truly a living doll, or human, or another twist. One thing for sure, that there must be were quite a darkness, or a lot of mysteries, surrounding their whole world. Idk whats the exact matters surrounded them, more importantly that soots thing origination. But, yeah, the element of surprise mostly become my anticipation toward the series. So i hope its not backstab me, like the previous season anticipation one. Lets see how far this series goes.

Both pre OP sequence have rather lacking animation, part of it is unnaturally sped up to try to hide how choppy the animation is.
The first sequence show a large amount of spoilers regarding intrigue of the story, it's likely that all of this will be "revealed" again when the characters find out about it, tho the viewer will already know about it(2:08 if you want to skip).
The second sequence fit within the rest episode, but pacing and animation is not very good.
The main part of the episode doesn't have the noticeably choppy animation it had earlier on, the pacing issue are also fixed. Fully translating the early slice of life portion of the manga in a largely non-slice of life story into anime is probably impossible but I think they did a decent job at it.

Although I have my issues with the way they handled the first 3 or so minutes of the show, what's done is done, and I thought they handled the pacing well in the rest of the episode. I was concerned that it would rushed to where you see the next cast of side-characters, so I'm pleased they kept the pacing similar to the manga. ED song slapped and I really enjoyed the bizarre, yet fitting OP. Overall, I'm relieved that it's not rushing like I anticipated. Can't wait for EP 2!

An intriguing start, almost gave me The Promised Neverland feels (though it's not), not just because it's CloverWorks.

Shadows and Living Dolls, a fascinating master-servant relationship between the dark shadow Kate and clumsy-cum-wonky Emilyko.

From doing housework to making sure that Kate is satisfied with Emilyko's work, Kate is one fine master who doesn't get angry at Emilyko even for the seemingly trivial of works. And before you ask, this is NOT Yuri.

A pretty good adaptation of the manga, but I'm worried for pacing issues since the manga chapters are literally short romps.

the short romps are only for the first few chapters of the manga to tell you more about the world, but after the begin the debutante it becomes more like a serious manga like promise Neverland. I assure you it's worth the wait, one of the best series I've ever read in a long time!

Apparently this season Aniplex/Funimation bet on interesting anime; Bishounen Tandeidan, Shadow House and Vivy, the truth is satisfied with the result of these 3 anime. Having the first chapter does not say much, but I think it is a correct decision, seeing the shadow and the doll called 'Kate' interact is interesting, also in the OP it shows very well as the cast and their different personalities, I hope to see the next and make it equal to or better than the first episode!

Great first episode. I will admit, however, that it felt way more light hearted then I thought it would. Although, I get the feeling that this show may not stay this light hearted for long based off the vibes I got from the intro.

The ED was also incredible.

Looking forward to see where this show goes.

Now this is the most unique one of this season!

The artstyle is really creepy but really good that it fits perfectly on the atmosphere of the anime. And we got an new human-doll relationshio this time. Also that OP though. ReoNa rocking it with her perfectly deep and creepy voice. This gets my fav OP of this season. Now I'm really hype to see how will this roleplay the other's human-doll relationship :)

oh wow this episode was pretty amazing, this anime seems extremely interesting and i really love the uniqueness of it. character designs are super nice and digging this victorian style stuff a whole lot, artwork and animations are wonderful (as expected from cloverorks) and the soundtrack is quite decent as well. the story is very intriguing and can say the same about the characters as well. love the mysterious vibe this anime gives off very much, cant wait to find out more about the world and stuff next episode.

I have not read the manga, but I found in this anime a very strong reference to Carl Jung and his work on the unconscious. I see in Emilyco the personification of the ego and in Kate all the "negative" emotions (the shadow) that a person have (The intro and outro animation reinforce this). I think this could be my favorite anime of the season!

That was really good! It was really interesting and very unique, I like it. There's also a lot of mystery in here, like what are the shadows or how the dolls were made and all that. OP is pretty good but the ED was a straight up banger.

Definitely thought something bad was gonna happen somewhere in the episode, but it was just creepily wholesome... for now probably. Well this has a lot of potential, looking forward to the next episode.

I actually liked how they clumped the first few chapters together and added extra plot to it (like Emiliko's first day and her getting named by Kate). Pacing seems fine enough given the number of episodes we have and the arc at which this is most likely going to end. Excited for the rest of the crew to get introduced.

The OP/ED were both fantastic and I think for me were easily one of the best for this season.

I think they did a good job with this episode, but I do think they fucked up some things to be honest.

That part annoyed me too tbh but after reading a few comments on this forum, I think to the anime onlys it didn’t really matter much. I’m sure a lot won’t really join the two dots together during the later scenes and still feel surprised.

Every bit as brilliant as I expected it to be . Just loved the atmosphere . Nothing mind-blowing happened , but my god the dark underlying tones all the scenes gave away . I love it when they actually spent time me to give the characters a...... Life. And the ed song is just brilliant . The op was .... Nothing special to me . I dunno why , I was expecting a banger of an op for an anime like this.

probably because of anime's theme . Ending should have been opening, opening should have been ending. Actually I like this switch

Having read 3 volumes of the manga yet, it's an excellent episode as I had imagined! The chara-design is super neat, while resembling Yakusoku no Neverland, who himself recommended this manga/anime. No wonder from CloverWorks. The opening and the ending are INSANE!
