This movie is ridiculous... and not really in a good way.

Other than the obvious Gurren Lagann comparison, territory this seems to want to revisit without understanding why it worked there, the traditional Japanese firefighting references and oddly placed mecha brought to mind Batman Ninja of all things.

If you're dead-set on watching it though (some of the action scenes are fantastic after all), I'd have to suggest skipping the prequels since they don't mesh well with how events play out here.

With how hard people hyped this one up, I actually feel really disappointed... that story was a mishmash of things I felt I have seen before, and not in a good way. It tried to tackle racism in a super cliche way and the villain character was way too obvious from the very beginning while not being intriguing in the slightest. There was also a lotttttt more CGI than I expected and while the CGI was "good" by anime standards, I felt like I was watching a video game. I really liked the character designs, they were all-super distinct and looked like they would have a lot of personality/backstory to them, but we barely get to know the characters so I didn't find myself getting attached to any or have a favorite. With how many odd ideas were being thrown around and the size of the cast, I can't help but think this one would have been better as a 12-episode anime to flesh things out more.

This movie only got popular with fujoshi because of that "kiss" scene, meh...

The visuals are really cool but the plot is really nonsense.
And not the good rule of cool nonsense.

Just bad writing and plotholes wherever you look.
Such a shame really.
Many things are easily fixable as well

I finally got around to watching this! The animation and visuals were amazing! <33 The story was a little confusing at times, but it was still good. I would've loved to see more of the side characters too. (Also, this reminded me a little of fire force)

I can see why many people were complaining about this being a Fire Force rip off lol but that's so not the case. While it's true the start was same as Fire Force everything else were entirely different.

Galo is very similar to Kamina and I like the guy. Lio was a great guy too. The characters on the good side were pretty well written but sadly the villain is one of most overused type. Destroy the world to save a few and become a hero lol. The plot twist about him being a Burnish was predictable too.

The soundtracks were lit af and they synargized with the fights really well.

Pretty great movie overall, some of the plot twist like the flame being aliens was great and a happy ending is always welcomed. Liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would.

I think that this title would work better as TV series not a movie. Oh well, still solid anime.

I just watched this movie, and I nutted over the soundtrack. Tbh, I wasn't at all surprised by the absurdity of it all. They just went the farthest with everything. I hope the studio had so much fun putting this together. The 3D artistry was really gorgeous as well.....now I have to return to my sad quarantine life...

I didn't give a shit about the actual core of the story really but the style of the narrative AND the characters was perfectly in tone with the rest of the movie. It unabashedly played into itself and every trope it could hamfist into there.

in short this movie was fuckin' rad. Having watched a shit ton of arthouse cinema lately where much of the movie is sacrificed for symbolism, messages, or, social critique, something just straight up fun like this was super refreshing.

Still love the movie, but I'm rather very confused why Lio Fotia has far more Member Favorites than Galo Thymos. Lio just reached 1,011 while Galo is stuck far behind at 256. Same thing on PDB, AnimePlanet, and on AniList. On PDB, Lio currently has 41 hearts and Galo's far behind with 16 hearts. On AnimePlanet, Galo has 224 hearts and 4 broken hearts AND Lio has 301 hearts and JUST ONE broken heart. And on AniList, Galo 238 hearts and Lio has 622 hearts!

I'm guessing it has to do with Lio being the flashiest character in the movie thanks to his Burnish powers and that Galo's just a dumb bootleg Kamina with zero Burnish powers. Amirite?

Well, even though I loved TTGL and KLK, it seems that I'm not into Trigger anime anymore, because since KLK ended I only enjoyed Space Patrol Luluco a little bit and nothing more.

Promare has a cool animation, cool soundtrack, Sawano a genius as always, but the "Trigger style" is not for me anymore.

Predictable start, easy to tell who the real bad guys are but the alternate universe was a nice twist.
Ofcourse the weapon created is called "Deus X Machina"
The fight scenes were amazing, that's something Trigger's been good at, by using the art they do they allow themselves to get some crazy animated scenes.
OST always makes it sound bigger than life itself, same with Kill La Kill, it just pumps up the scenes even more.

9/10, just a fun insane enjoyable movie ^^

This anime is the typical style-over-substance movie.
It was above average.

I was enjoying it so much in the first hour, I loved the colors and seeing the twist that Burnish were the victims instead of the villains.
The animation was pretty good, the CGI wasn't the best but the 2D animation was stellar. *chef's kiss*

Too bad the other hour was just mecha fights. I'm not a fan of mecha but I can tolerate it if the fights are not on screen all the time. There were too many explosions.

Also Deus X Machina? Seriously??

I thought I'd give it a 8/10 but it was too drawn out so I rate 7/10.

It's nothing that hasn't been seen before, the ending reminded me of Kill la Kill while the rest were references to TTGL and other Trigger anime. I'm not going to mention obvious things like the lack of screentime for secondary character because it's impossible with the length of the movie:

+Unlike BNA, the issue of coexistence between different races was better treated and was not given much attention.
+Burnish origins were obvious being Trigger but at least they didn't leave it unexplained.
+The animation, fights, choreography.
+The movie executed Fire Force's premise better than Fire Force lol. Even the designs.
+Galo, Lio and Aina are quite cool!

-The movie to some extent implied that Kray was genuinely trying to save humanity by sacrificing a lot of Burnish and I was even expecting a flashback as it was shown in the movie but one when he actually saved Galo from the flames that he caused, with this the character is not so exaggeratedly evil and at least he can have a genuine connection with Galo.
-Heris was a terrible character. Except for a scene where she feels compassion for Galo, her prominent trait is being Aina simp. Also this is for the duration of the movie more than anything else.
-Vulcan character is annoying and being a recurrent villain is worse.

Very generous 7/10 for the movie.

BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF
THE SALTY BORING WEEB CRITICS
BURNING THEM TO MIDDLE OF

this movie is SPECTACULAR.

Don't fool youRself, Trigger is a studio where staff gather thinking: "how can we make something the most EPIC and HYPE possible?"

PROMARE is the awnser, reuning all the bingo elements that Gainax/Trigger PROUDLY repeat as a brand:

- ROBOTS
- TITLES
- DRILLS
- ACTION
- COLORS
- KAMINA
- ALIENS
- RACE CONFLICT
- THAT SAME PLOT TWIST
- BANGER SOUNDTRACK

Now elevated to the state of art. And you are there bitching for a non-sexual gay kiss?

An easy 10/10.

And his Deus Ex Machina plot device Robot?

This had to be one of the dumbest things I've ever had the misfortune to watch. I was expecting to really enjoy this given this comes from the same place as TTTGL and Kill la Kill but it didn't work out that way. Perhaps something with as stupid a premise as Promare (fire is interdimensional aliens? wtf?) needs a series to flesh out the characters to help me overlook that. I mean Kill la Kill is just as absurd but I can actually care what happens after 24~ episodes as I come to enjoy the cast. With a 2hr film all I have is the stupidity and it made this fall flat for me. Generic characters led by a ripoff Kamina and the same kind of fights I've seen already from TTGL as well. 3/10.

Only reason I'm not giving this a worse rating is because the animation kept my eyes focused on the pretty colors but brain can't ignore the lack of substance. Disappointed to say the least.

"Ripoff Kamina" LOL. It can't be a ripoff if both characters were created from the same person.

I loved Gurren Lagann, but Kill La Kill was meh at best. None of the characters really clicked with me and I didn't like the story very much until near the end.

Quoting my earlier comment from previously. I pretty much found out why from multiple people.

1. ORIGINALITY. Lio is not a blatant reskin of a previous character from Gainax/Trigger. His character is inspired by works outside of Gainax/Trigger Galo is obviously because he looks and acts almost exactly like Kamina.

2. PERSONALITY. Galo is perceived to be "loud, annoying, and stupid" that he gets on a lot of people's nerves. Lio has a more cool, calm, collected personality that appeals to a lot of people and draws them to him.

3. DESIGN. Character design can make or break a character. Everyone clearly loves good-looking characters. Lio clearly has a great design that many people vibe with. Him being an androgynous, leather-wearing pretty boy with a slim figure draws people of all sorts to him. Galo looks like a dumb jock with a stupid hairstyle by comparison, not to mention his hourglass figure looks unrealistic and ugly(someone compared Galo to a "bag of Doritos in the worst way"). And again, he looks like Kamina but missing a lot of components that made him iconic in the first place.

4. STORY. Lio is the direct opposing force to the main villain in the story. So you can say Lio is the true hero. Galo...you can say he's just there. He happens to be caught in the war between the oppressed minorities and their oppressors. Unfortunately, Galo starts on the oppressors' side and makes some racist comments towards the Burnish at first which can be a major turn-off for minorities in real life. There are people who even go as far as to argue Galo "has no character development or arc" and that Lio does.

And that's all I have.

You can ripoff your own material, easier than creating anything new after all. Should try and do better than a straight copy/paste though.

The phrase "Over-the-top" took a look at this movie and decided to retire. It's not very original and not all of it is great but damn, if it isn't just entertaining as hell. Characters weren't that deep but they got the job done.

I think what serves this movie well is that it never takes itself seriously. If they had decided to dwell on morality or the consequences of what they were doing for very long, I think the movie's flaws would've been that much more highlighted. However, everyone involved in this wanted to make this a balls-to-the-walls action movie and they succeeded. 7/10.

I just saw a Tweet on Twitter with someone calling Galo a "knockoff Kamina" saying they almost turned off the movie just because they found him "annoying". And that they only stayed watching for Lio and found him a "great character."

Also on LetterBoxd, some Italian dude claimed that Lio was the character who was "characterized well" while the others are just one-note archetypes. He didn't say anything about Galo or Kray despite them being two of the three major characters, but they didn't respond to my question about them so I Blocked while leaving my comments in their stupid review.

This time they didn't even try to put something in there besides "style". And at this point with all these references it just feels like blatant recycling. The only thing to praise here is the visuals, although low fps 3DCG in some scenes still ruins it for me.

This may sound controversial but I honestly didn't care for Kill La Kill. It was a disappointment to be honest. The story and characters felt bland and barebones with not much substance. Ryuko, Senketsu, Mako, and Gamagori were the only characters I liked in the entire show. Satsuki is literally everything I hate in a character, I literally couldn't stand her every time she was on-screen acting like a fascist dictator. The Elite Four (except Gamagori) also felt flat and unlikable. I loved to hate Nui and Ragyo though, I enjoyed them as villains and how the narrative didn't shy away from how horrible they were. I wish Ryuko killed them though.

That was a surprisingly good movie. The first 10 minutes were pretty terrible, and both the animation and art took a bit of time getting used to, but it ended up being pretty good overall. Also, I'm not one to often talk about ships, but in this case, I just wish Lio and Galo ended up together.

Protagonist was pretty awesome. soundtracks and voice acting were really good. It was action packed, but not much logic. Also side characters are underdeveloped. Story is average. Movie format was clearly working against it. Not to mention the colors in animation were too distracting. Overall decent, nothing special.

Alright alright, what kind of insanity did I just witness ? That was completely crazy. My brain exploded. Twice.

Okay so, what can I say about this movie... I'm disappointed to be honest. There are two important qualities : animation and ost. Both were awesome.
But those are really the only two real qualities I can think of.
The first half was far from perfect, but it had a lot of potential. The story seemed pretty interesting, and Lio's character particularly promising.
But after Lio's "defeat", everything lost absolutely any substance (and it already didn't have much), and it just became hype, hype and hype again, hiding an intense amount of stupidity.

I understand the movie never intended to be deep or whatever and is just supposed to be exciting, but even with that, it had the potential to be so much more, that's so frustrating.
Lio particularly disappointed me, because as I said I found him very promising at first. Definitely not a truly great and wonderfully written character, but a very charismatic and compelling character nonetheless. I really was looking forward to more scenes with him. And then... And then what happened ? He lost everything that made him interesting in my eyes only to become... Fanservice ? That's really all he was ?

And I'm talking about him because he at least had the potential to be pretty great, but that's just to say that as expected from a movie that privileges style over substance, all the characters were ridiculously shallow. The villain was the very definition of ridiculous, and Galo was really annoying. Of course I'm not even gonna talk about the side characters who could have been literally anyone else and the result would have been the same (and I can't believe they really wasted a unique design such as Lucia's for that).
I think what really lost me was when, during the characters presentation in the ed, I saw this random lady and realised she was supposed to be taken as an actual character. I laughed.

So yeah, I'm really disappointed. And frustrated, because if you are so ambitious when it comes to style, you can also be ambitious when it comes to substance. It's a real shame we couldn't have both.
With all that said I still enjoyed this movie, and in the end it doesn't pretend to be more than pure fun, so I don't have the heart to give it less than a 5. But I also can't give it more than that, unfortunately.

The Gurren Lagann vibes were real lol wtf...

Felt a bit too forced, and I did not like the art style at all. PLus they could have gone a somehwat different route with the lot that would have felt more satisfying, even if only just slightly. The music felt out of place and just didnt do it for me either. BUt at least I got a kick out of the similarities from Lagann ( wether intentional or otherwise). 5.5/10

rewatched this last week, this anime is just what would happen if you let arc system works do anime lol, its really interesting to see cgi used like this.

Well, its trigger, they been using 3d gaphics on a substancial amount of their shows and people didn't even notice for how good it was 90% of the time.

This movie even tho really chaotic is just probably like a tech demo of what they can archive if they put all they have into a production. Also to show that doing arc sys style animation in an actual anime is something that can be done without dying in the process

2nd time watching this movie. Happened to be airing at anime society event so I was like why not. Got nothing better to do other than a shit ton of uni work fml :(((((

Great movie, absolutely wild and fun, you could tell the animators had a ton of fun making this. This movie is so wack that it doesn't even make sense at times are is really just an array of events waiting to have its moments explode. I mean a literal robot called "Deus X Machina", couldn't get any better than that with plot armour and other unrealistic bs that happens all the time.

Movie visuals slapped every single damn time, I kinda don't get why I put this so low on my list. It is really good stuff so it is cool I had time to rewatch this based Trigger movie.

Kinda like Fire Force but FF isn't even that based. The movie isn't even that similar, only on a superficial level which is like the beginning only.

Overall, time well spent, in terms of me rewatching and Trigger just making some mad hype. Mecha doesn't look so dry with Trigger around.

NON-STOP ACTION-PACKED!
So Incredible! Wholesome!
This is on a whole different level!

Near about 2 hours of movie full of burning passion, which offers everything within this short span. It doesn't give you any rest with the non-stop activity (burning) going on.

There's nothing useless, and everything is to the point.

SCI-FI story! Having watched a few similar shows (Darling in the Franxx + Kill la Kill + Tengen Toppa Guren Lagann), I assumed it is just your typical story, but it isn't ; except that the characters are passionate in both the cases. The story excited me when Deus Prometh explained the science of promare. Deus Prometh gave a brief explanation, although I couldn't keep up with his explanation, but hearing those names alone made me so excited!

The ANIMATION is just incredible. I'm so grateful for the dedicated work by the animators. The Animation was full of activity, and nothing was useless at all.

I've never seen a show like Promare ; something so concise, yet so beautiful, so full of activity, so full of passion,...

This is a masterpiece in true sense, something that excites you even if you don't like the genre.

Every time I see and hear someone praise Lio and ignore/insult protagonist Galo I have the strong urge to gouge my eyes out and cut off my ears. It still really ticks me off after a year I first watched this movie.

In a sense its classic Trigger. Atleast by the end, when it gets decent. The first half of the movie made me wonder if I accidentally watched whatever netflix wants to push as "anime". I really got bored during the first fight already, what was that, 10 minutes in?

The colour scheme was completely off putting for me. Felt like watching some kids cartoon. Some scenes looked good but by that time I already subsciously gave up on ever liking it.

What is it, 3D animation with panning shots and camera POV changes twice a second? And a lack of detail but washed out colours?
Both TTGL and KLK look more visually pleasing and they are shows, the former a decade older than this movie..

Im seriously worried about Trigger, after DitF I already thought that but now its confirmed. They either recycled half of their better productions, namely TTGL (Galo literally looks like Kamina, same with the mecha design), or they overdid the fanservice. You can certainly throw in callbacks to beloved classics but this is like ecchi in anime, half the content, when its done to hide the lack of plot.
You would think Trigger doing their one trick pony time and time again would refine it and ultimately result in their best possible one trick pony, but instead its like they are burned out. Sticking to the format, doing what you would expect of Trigger but without the passion and excitement which make you rewatch it over and over again.

I would rather rewatch TTGL or KLK for the dozenth time than watch this.

Oh and of course they managed to make it about aliens again. Its not even surprising anymore. The 2001 homage at the end was neat I guess.

6/10

edit - frack it this looks bad and is boring, a glorified tech demo but the tech looks bad 4/10. Git gut again Trigger, pls.

Not a great Mecha fan but this was OK.
The Pastel Colors were a bit different, but, not as sharp though.
Happy Ending, sort of??
