It's one of the better Ghibli films. Is the score high? A bit. It's still a pretty good movie though.

There are multiple reasons why that can happen, for instance the use of visual language, the aesthetics and the thorough detail put in any aspect of its presentation which directly correlates to its themes -like how the character growth of Chihiro is evident if you pay attention to her body language throughout the movie- but this is built under the false premise that the script and character development are low when they are actually pretty fucking amazing.

When I was a kid I watched many Ghibli-movies on TV.I enjoyed many of them, but Spirited away was my favorite. To me it was, atleast as a kid,a truly a magical expercience whenever I watched it.Need to rewatch it though, maybe I´m just fooled by nostalgia.

Broke: This highly rated movie is highly rated because most people enjoyed watching it and consider it to be a solid work of cinema.

Woke: This highly rated movie is overrated because I didn't like it.

Criticism is cheap. There are flaws in everything. No work of art will be loved by everyone. Now can everyone just chill?

I went into this without any expectations, but this is a movie that is based on the emotions that are presented. Just look at the train scene later on in the story, they are going to a place they've never been to with no ticket to get back. It's a silent scene but it gives so many emotions without saying a word. Obviously you have to enjoy movies like this. I feel like its the same with Mononoke Hime, both are telling a story with a deep reasoning behind them and yet they dont answer many questions while saying so much without saying anything.

It's a fun and cool movie, but that's about it. Reading most of the arguments here defending the movie to be a masterpiece only made me confirmed it's not that big of a deal. Also, no one is saying the movie had to be a masterpiece. The movie is fine as it is. But there is no doubt it is extremely overrated

It's a Ghibli movie.

So yeah, 10, 20 or 30 years later, the animation will still be top notch and might never get old, that's how incredible the animation is.

The OST is incredible too, as always with ghibli you'll say.

The world ghibli manages to create everytime is magic and really creative.

And that's exactly what the target audience want.

If you know a bit of anime, if you start writing review (well, basically, you're not a casual watcher/normie) you'll notice the story is a mess, characters have no logic, etc.
In that case, just switch off your brain and enjoy what makes Ghibli famous : the art, the OST and the world building.

I still give a 8/10 because It was entertaining.

The movie was likely high rated because of the over abundance of Gen Z/ millennials born in the mid to late 90s onward that kept having this shoved down their collective throats on tv and by Ghibli.

Personally, the animation got worse than it used to be in the ghibli films, not better, and the story is not original, or captivating. ITs a 6/10 at best. THe best Ghibli Films will always be Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, ANd the totoro era of films. Nausica was okay, but too short. THe manga was waaaay btter and hardcore. BUt we live in an age when a second frozen flick was made, and people still believe in religion, so...Just gotta laugh and shake ones head at the rest of the human sheeple.

Wrong. The oscars are a vapid excuse for ego inflation that mean little to nothing. The mere fact that it has to happen every year, let alone that Oscars are meaningless is plain for anyone with half a brain to see.
Ricky Gervais didnt even needto host to know that all awards are folly. He stopped at the award show he did cause he needed the cash, but has always told it like it was, while enjoying a stiff drink on stage. *shrugs *
And yah, just because something is " popular" doesnt make it smart, good, or worthy of time or money spent. Welcome to the world.

You said the movie is highly rated because of nostalgia among millennials. This is obviously wrong, and the movie's Adacemy Award is an example of why.

I never said nostalgia at all. You simply did not understand what I wrote. which is sadly typical of most humans these days.
What I said was that the movie was being shoved down peoples throats, and that the majority of the people targeted, were those born in the specific age group born in the 1990s and onwards that the mainstream media erroneously labels as millennials. Now of course anyone of any age can watch something, but without Ghibli pushing the envelope and taking risks, like they used to, the movie in question marked the beginning of the decline of the studio. Hence one of the reasons why MIyazaki stepped away after even more years of let downs afterwards. Spirited away marked the beginning of the end. Finally, after seeing how much worse things had gotten, he came back because he was both bored and knew he had to try to save his company.
You see something ALWAYS has to win at shows like the Oscars, and thats why it doesnt mean anything when a film wins. Ricky Gervais has been taking about this for years, and even Jim Carrey has pointed out how stupid and pointless all the awards are. George Carlin knew it, and so did Richard Pryor and TONS of people in hollywood. I even figured it out when I wasa child. Its all just nonsense and grandstanding.
Just like the lesser award shows like the Tony awards, or Golden Globes, or Emmys also dont mean anything. Somebody HAS to win. Like the olympics. If ever there was a time when a category didnt have a winner, then it might be more meaningful. But the entertianment "lords" force a winner for every category, and often, its not the most worthy.
But if you like sprited away, thats your deal. Its like how people still like twilight even though it was cringe fest for everyone else back in the day. Or how the Frozen movies have rotted the brains of little girls born in gen z. Or how Cannibal holocaust was clearly fake, yet because of how simple and conservative people were, the FBI arrested the iflm makers long before realizing the film was a sham. Or even how popular harry potter was, and though the movies were fine, it was low fantasy at best. Hell even the lord of the rings, mainly due to its franchise paving the way for modern fantasy, was not truly high fantasy by todays standards as it was set during the waning years of the elves and the dwindling of magic in the world. Like in shakespeares Midsummer Nights Dream when the faerie folk decided to leave earth and go back to the feywild, taking magic and wonder with them; there is a high water mark and even a low watermark, and Spirited away was just average, between 5-6 out of 10 at best. Most films tv shows fall into that same score area, its just sadly the way it is. Ciao

No I simply said that often people will en masse gravitate toward something, but that doesnt make it worthwhile.
Its not even one of the top 3 best ghibli films, and since even now, most people still dont watch anime the world over, its not saying much that psirited away is considred so "great". Mob mentality is worthless. Plus I am obviously not the only one that thinks so, and even if in the minority, that just makes our sentiment all the more right. As I said, you wwill believe whatever you are fated to. As for me, I wont waste more time with this topic. Later lol

Wanna see something overrated? Just go for tenki no ko, in series we have nanatsu no taizai(too much plot seriously, 1 or 2 plot its amazing but this series have like 10 plot and its make me bored)0

Ghibli is always like this, its basically like a grandfather who tell a story for his grandson before he sleep, like fairy tale yeah its basically a fairy tale and I love it. Kids nowdays dont have a grandfather who tell a story for their, because they watch it from their smartphone, but i cant blame them about it. IMO, why SP win oscar? Because it was unique. Hollywood movie have a lot story like exchange soul and fall in love. So basically SP was unique. Oscar always like this, like the godfather or shawshanks redemption its slow but it was unique af.

Spirited Away was pretty disappointing. It just felt like a letdown in comparison to nearly every other Ghibli movie I've seen, especially considering that it's the most acclaimed out of all of them. I think the thing about Spirited Away that really dazzled people, and the reason it was such a hit, is that it just has an extremely imaginative setting; a vibrant fantasy world which seems to have captured the hearts of moviegoers both young and old. However, as an avid anime fan in my twenties, the movie is simply not made for people like me. It's a visual spectacle, but not much else. The story and characters are both quite simple and underdeveloped. (When I got to the end of the movie, my first thought was, "That's it?") I'm neither a child whose imagination will soar away into this wondrous environment, nor a more casual adult watcher who can simply sit back and appreciate the escapist fantasy.

With the other Ghibli movies that I've seen, where the plot was held together with a bit more than spit and enthusiasm, I was able to get invested and be transported more into the unique settings. But with Spirited Away, the movie is simply too shallow for viewers with much in the way of expectations.
