I always wanted to learn how to draw, but I'm just tracing some stuff...

They are ugly, but I want to hear your opinions on them.

These are the one that I consider to be better. Yet, I'm always aiming to improve, got any tip for that?

It's not bad. I like the sense of style you've got going on there. You might want to think a bit more about proportions though. For Mio, her left bicep looks gigantic when, from the look of it, she's meant to be quite slim. The right leg too looks a bit on the thin side.

Thanks! I'm glad that you think it's not that bad..

Yes, but I'm still a beginner, so this might improve with a bit of practice, another thing did not like is the face, especially in the Shichimiya drawing, it also look a bit off...

Shichimiya's face is incredibly broad, and Mio has that alpha male chin. But really, they're not bad. Your aptness for anatomy feels unpolished though, if you get around that I think your drawings can get really good, especially so since you said you're a beginner.

Yes, drawing faces are kind of a pain for me right now, I just can't get the proportions right, but yes, I just need to practice more, since not all artists started out as pros.

Now, I'm not an artist so take these opinions with a grain of salt

Mio:
- The shoe sits weird on her right foot. Her ankle should be thinner and thigh thicker. The posture of her leg on the ground also seems unnatural.
- Her left knee seems sharper than it should and from what I can see her foot is pointing inwards to her right thigh whereas it should sit parallel.
- The hands are too small but her left arm is too large and the fabric could use some work
- She has pointy cheeks and I think you should avoid those arcs and diagonal lines in her hair

Satone:
- The expression itself is fine but the head-shape is off
- getting fabric and hair right is hard but it can be practiced

Understand how real anatomy, fabric, hair and light works and it'll become way easier to work around with a style.
Although, you don't have to worry about fabric and hair if you only want to draw anime characters.

(oh, I noticed that you've provided some reference pics.)

Yes, if somebody references something than the person also should credit the references, it's fair only that way.

It's important to observe real things and people, I'm actually doing that. Everything starts from the real world after all...

(Actually, I want to learn more serious styles, but I started off with some moe, because it's easier (and I'm a huge KyoAni fanboy..))

Besides what all has been said, the shading (on Mio) could use some work. Note how on the original artwork—the shoulders, skirt, and legs (mainly the leg underneath the arm) have certain parts shaded alongside highlights to give the image depth. In your drawing, however, these areas are all shaded in, making them feel flat and boring. Try to only shade parts that should be shaded (aka, void of light or highlights). Besides the proportion issues which have already been mentioned, improving on shading should help the overall neatness and quality of your art.

Also, small tip, clothing likes to pop-out rather than cave-in. Unless if the position or type of clothing makes it so heavy where it falls on-top of itself, drawing clothing where grooves, wrinkles, or other indents fold on the clothing mainly equates to drawing the clothing to where indents pop out, then form back into the shape of the figure.

Besides the complaints listed, plus those above, the artwork is not bad if you are just beginning to draw; nicely done ( ̄▽ ̄ )

Thanks for the advice! I think the main problem was that I traced it from a low-quality image at school, during a recess, and that's why I messed up those parts...

- Try to stop tracing because despite popular belief it does not help you learn to draw and in fact makes it take longer (looking at references is okay but not direct tracing)
- Practice proportions in the face to stop the faces looking wonky
- Practice folds on clothing
- Practice shading
- Practice drawing simple backgrounds, this will make your drawings more interesting to look at and less flat
- Draw male characters, not just female so you are used to the male body proportions. You might not be interested in male characters but it will pay off. o
Otherwise you will end up being able to draw females really good but malesnot good which will become frustrating.
- Good job on drawing the characters in different and dynamic positions, rather than the same position over and over again

Dont give up!

Well, I have some faith in tracing, Naoko Yamada (animator, director at Kyoto Animation) also started with tracing stuff form Dragon Ball and Patlabor and look where she is now..

But aside form this, thanks for the advices!

Yeah, if I could find one, I'm broke atm, so that's for later.

But I still can achieve something, if I'll stay self-taught (like Toyotaro, the current illustrator of the Dragon Ball Super manga, he also did not learned art officially, but see, he's currently drawing the most-well known manga's sequel, which is definitely something!).

If you trust yourself, why not, you can learn on your own.

You've got a really good innate sense of anatomy for someone who's never studied it. Check out this wonderful website http://www.posemaniacs.com/ perfect for learning more about anatomy. I think you've got a lot of natural talent, if you just put the time in you could be really good.

@Insane-Zoro: One suggestion: Try not to use lined/square-printed paper. ;-)

P. S.: I know, I know. I did the same thing when I was younger.

*LOL* Funny... I can only do faces and the rest just won't look right. Maybe we should team up*; I do the heads and you do everything else? :-D

Hey It's wild how good you're getting in so little time
You have some talent and a good eye. I read you can't use square paper which is okay.

The other alternative is drawing gridlines on top of the original picture (there are apps for it if you're using your phone or you can use Gagnon studio online http://www.timgagnon.com/grid/) and pick the area/rectangle to draw. It's helpful when you have a lot of limbs and details in the picture. At some point you won't even need it. Like this:

Have you just started drawing or been doing ir for years?

Either way, its a pretty decent fanart. Do you have some original characters of your own though? That would be interesting to see if you did.

You're doing pretty good. One of the biggest improvements as I went down this post is that you're using a pencil now lmao. Your drawings are pretty close to the original. It's all about practice and drawing more often.

You gotta work on your shading. Your shadows look messy and unconfident now. I can't tell you how to do it like this, but maybe you can watch some yt vids about how to shade. One of the most important techniques in sketching is how you draw your lines when shading. If you have the chance, I recommend taking lessons if you're serious about drawing. It rly makes a huge difference. You have to get that feeling. Cause some of those drawing "rules" can sometimes be overlooked, but you rly need to feel when to overlook it etc. There are honestly no rules to drawing, it's all about feeling, but the basics are necesarry. But then again, there are lots of pro's who are self-taught (or at least that's what they say). I'm just telling you the easy way.

The next step on your shadowing is to shadow other parts of the character, like the hair and clothes. You have to remember that what your model is a coloured image, but what you're doing is sketching.

Keep it up, you're doing a good job rn!
⛥Something wicked this way comes.⛥

Practice your basic shapes if nothing else ...circles , squares , line- horizontal, vertical, cubes and cylinders; fill entire books with these and make it a daily habit; Do that and try observing and finding them in everyday life and in anatomy. I wouldnt wanna rob you of your way of drawing things but you should check Michael hamptons - figure drawing for all its worth , just to get sense for proportions for your figures. Though going outside and drawing live things beats everything. Have fun :)

I don't know for how long you've been drawing, but if it's for a short period of time these look great! Most artists start with tracing, so there's nothing wrong with it. When I was a beginner years back i also used that method, it actually helps a lot with understanding proportions. Now I look at multiple pictures for references, and after you think you've improved enough to stop with tracing, you can start using those. But, the advice I give to everyone which helped me improve the most is- just draw as often as you can, anything is fine.

Since it seams like you've got a better sketch book since drawin gon line paper just urks my nerves, the next step in terms of materials is to get a wider range of pencils (such as 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, and HB), some paper stumps to assist in shading, different erasers, and some micron pens.
