Anime where you like the concept, but not the execution?

For me, it's sorta Dr.Stone and Kanata no Astra. They're both limited by their demographic (ESPECIALLY with Stone being in Shounen Jump of all things) and never really go as realistic/dark as they could to make it more thrilling. It's hard to be concerned when you know everyone will be more or less perfectly fine by the end of the arc.

Also, A Certain Index series. The world building and concepts? Yes. Touma and Index in particular? Nah.

Akanesasu Shoujo: I don't know to explain... but something there went a bit weird.
Babylon: Corruption is fine, but when they did... really?
Black Cat: The dramatic change after episode 7... was too much for me.
Butlers: Chitose Momotose Monogatari: When we found out they're all special, it became quite lame.
Naruto: It was fine at the beginning but then it was dragged like hell.
Yuri on Ice: a story about growth is nice, I don't mind much about shonen-ai... but that was lame. In both aspects (I know it's an unpopular opinion, bear with it)

Honestly SAO. It was promising but turned awful. I guess SDS as well. It had a story going on but it turned to be complete shit. Also I think the manga should have ended already. It had an ending which was good but oooooh no, Let's bring back Zeldris for the third time.

1.Akame ga kill - the concept is amazingly good, but the comedic relief moments are what buried the anime.

2.Kimetsu no Yaiba - the concept is as good as "Dororo", but while it has impact it lacks substance. The plot is generic, not powerful enough and doesn't make me feel sad for the victims.

3.Golden Kamuy - to many light hearted moments, I don't mind the adventure or cooking subplot. Just the characters (men) are a bit to comical for me to take seriously.

4.DanMachi - the concept of Gods descending to earth and creating familia is brilliant. Reminds me a little of the gods in "No game no life"

5.Maou-sama Retry - The guy comes from a Sci-Fi world filled with violence, conspiracies and action. And in this world its like he's so out of place.

6.Tsuujou Kougeki - the idea of your mother joining you is interesting, but making it a comedy is abbismal.

And many, many more others, but I'll just finish with, most recent Isekai series have a good concept, but the execution is bellow average.

Psycho-Pass, definitely.
The idea of a network system that controls the Society is awesome and could raise interesting philosophical questions. But it turns out it's so dumb.
I'll give a single example, very representative of the entire series: the gun. It's connected to a network (and the network analyses the target: if the person deserves to be shot, the gun shoots, otherwise it doesn't), but as a result it has all the flaws of a connected device: it's entirely dependant of the network, it's slow if the network is slow, and it doesn't even work if you're out of range.

But the worst is the fact that they mix up "insane" with "dangerous". In this series, the more insane, the more dangerous (and likewise: the more sane, the less dangerous). Obviously, it doesn't work this way. You can be very dangerous while being very sane in your head.

And the worst (or best, depending on how you see it) is the writers were well aware of these flaws. In fact, most of the issues in the 1st season are due to the fact that this system is so dumb. At some point, the MC must avoid an enemy before he can shoot, because the gun takes so damn long to connect.

Don't get me wrong though, I did enjoy the first season. The rest, however... jeez.

Also, there's SAO, of course. Excellent setting that raises societal questions, as the survivors all make different Life decisions: some are too afraid of Death so they accept their fate, others do everything to get out of this Death Game, and others simply enjoy it, and don't even believe people actually die in this game.
Sadly... it doesn't turn out very well. I was so fond of the idea of the Red Players, but the story barely does anything with that.
Everything changes. Even the happy and funny things eventually disappear. How can I still enjoy this place then?
- Furukawa Nagisa (Clannad)

You have to make a choice. Either you give up on your soul for the sake of science, or you give up on science to save your soul. In my case, the soul was already in pieces.
- Lloyd Asplund (Code Geass)

Do you understand the meaning behind Nunnaly's smile? She can't see or walk. So there are things in this world that she knows she can't do alone. Her smile... is her only way to show gratitude.
- Lelouch Vi Britannia (Code Geass)

Death is part of Life.

Death Parade I really liked the concept of judging people for their actions but they started exploring too much and putting a lot of questions in peoples minds in a single season. If they spread it in 1 or 2 more seasons it could have done a lot better

Shield Hero - I loved the idea of a classical revenge story isekai addition plus the addition of some romance. Unforuntaley it just turned out to be botched justice porn and a loli harem

Cross Ange - Had a badass female lead with ample amount of romance involved (something which you don't really see mixed together) yet it just kept throwing bs after bs

Grancrest Senki - In fairness I did like it tbh, but I felt like the supernatural monster stuff that happened at certain moments felt really out of place. The whole idea of a war story involving kingdoms ruled by crests and whatnot was cool though

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou - Really liked the idea of how hard work sometimes doesn't always pay off, but god was it ruined by an annoying female lead and a terrible romance

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Really interesting concepts, themes and allegories about the position and role of the human race on Earth, societal structures and so on, but the execution/style... yikes. The hectic approach and the general over-the-topness were so unbearable that to me it constitutes the best example of "it was good, but I didn't like it".

Evil or Live: had the potential to be an intense, prison-escape thriller, but instead just felt awkward.

Re: Zero: I love the concept of Re: Zero: the idea of an ordinary guy being thrust into a fantasy world, expecting to be its Kirito, yet having almost no powers, save for his ability to go back in time when he dies is the perfect setup for an intense psychological anime, that explores how constantly dying, constantly experiencing horrible pain, can drive someone insane gradually: how it can first make one cautious, afraid, but then full blown paranoid. But...any mental hurdles Subaru encounters, is fixed by the next episode. Which makes me question what the point of all the gore is? Not only that, but most of the characters are underdeveloped, which is a huge flaw in a story that banks itself on you caring about their lives being saved, Subaru is beyond annoying, has no backstory that justifies why he behaves the way they do, and I still don't entirely understand where this story is going.

Boogiepop Phantom - I love the concept of Boogiepop, but I just can't watch either version. The original is just grey and dark with nothing visually keeping my interest. The 2019 show is much nicer to look at but after the first three episodes, it starts showing the story in chronological order again and suddenly gets way less interesting as a result.
Ergo Proxy - A similar problem to the first Boogiepop show. I hate grey! Everything about Ergo Proxy is boring except for the concept of a cyberpunk mystery manhunt. Please, just give me something to keep me awake.
Mononoke - With Ergo Proxy it's not enough colour. With Mononoke, it's too much colour. Everything just melds into a rainbow much in front of my eyes, and some of the character designs in those first two episodes I stomached made me just stop and stare for a few minutes thinking "that's super racist, right?", which is a shame, because I think the premise sounds fun.
Soul Eater NOT - It's based in Soul Eater so that side of the concept is automatically cool, but the rest is the most sterile, benign, money-grubbing bullshit I've ever seen. If I hadn't seen Soul Eater before, I probably wouldn't think too much of this, but because I have it almost feels like a personal insult.

Mirai Nikki had a cool ass premise with the diaries and the battle royal but my god Yuno was the ONLY likable and decently written character in the entire thing, everyone else was just absolute garbage. Yuno wasn't even that great, she just wasn't as terribly written as the others.

Netsuzou TRap. I am a huge yuri buff, and I was super excited for the anime adaptation of this, but they completely butchered it. The ending was so rushed and kind of came out of nowhere. I think every problem with this anime could be fixed if they made the episodes 24 minutes long like normal instead of 9. Likable characters and interesting plot for a yuri/shoujo ai, but terribly executed.

Also Pupa. I've heard it is actually a pretty good manga, but was absolutely screwed over by its short runtime.

Coppelion, Terra Formars, Mirai Nikki are a few that come to mind.

In general I find a LOT of sci-fi to fall into this category for me these days, anime and live-action. Kanata no Astra was also one of them to some degree, although my issues had nothing to do with not being 'dark' enough. I think I just like sci-fi too much, I have seen and read too much over the years and I end up having too high hopes for any sci-fi-looking show or movie these days. I'm always inherently interested, especially if the show is space related, but it's been quite a long time since I last got fully hooked and fell in love with a show because unless it's top-tier execution or highly innovative it'll always feel like I've seen it a million times before, including at least a handful of times where it was done better. It's a shame, really.
I probably regret this post by now.

Definitely Re:Creators. The concept of various fictional characters being brought to the normal world seems really appealing and you'd thought the anime would be interesting because of that. But to me, the story was just plain boring. It had a good start and some awesome moments (especially the fights), but for most of the time I was just bored to death by the pointless dialogue and the dull main character. In the end I couldn't even watch it until the end. It's really a shame, because as I said, the concept seemed so interesting.

This one could have been a very funny unique isekai. The premise was something we rarely saw when it came to the isekai trend but everything just fell flat and by the end turned out to be just as bad as some of the other isekai shows.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni - The story is as unique as they come, the non-chronological storytelling isn't something I'm generally a fan of but I first came to appreciate how deftly it could be handled in its sister series, Higurashi, and it's an excellent device that doesn't detract from the main story but fuses as a central part of it in both series. It's been word on the street or internet for a while that the visual novel is one of the best in its medium.

Yet the characterization shown in the actual show is so impotent and threadbare compared to how either what I'm sure the actual VN is (don't know for sure; I don't read them myself) or what Higurashi is that you don't really feel connected to either the characters or events unfolding in front of you or feel immersed in even remotely the same way. It's just too fast/rushed/corners cut,, too watered down in too many places to the point where someone who hasn't even read its source material can easily detect it's butchered, and jumps around without real purpose constantly to the point it's a shame because it takes away so much of the enjoyment.

I'll probably finish it today or tomorrow, but it's telling and a sad sign when I would pretty much rather watch any random five minutes of Higurashi again than another new episode. I'll probably end up giving it a 6.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Fascinating stories with a lot of different parts going into them will probably be a common theme here since I don't start an anime in the first place if the plot doesn't interest me. This also has one.

I actually love the surface level plot and much of the internal psychological plot which becomes a large part of the show, but they were not balanced skillfully IMO and the latter wasn't handled as well as the former. It just becomes too obnoxious to listen to the same of Shinji's whines over and over again about the same stuff. I don't mind seeing anything imaginable portrayed once, but after that, unless I suppose you relate with it more in some way, it's just annoying and eye rolling. I still enjoyed a good 80% of the show, but the ending is absolutely critical, and like a lot of people, I wasn't a fan of the last two episodes, but unlike a lot of people, I wasn't a fan either of the End of Evangelion film.

Glad I watched it, but anything where repetition of the same self-loathing becomes the focus to the point of taking over everything else in the plot is not my cup of tea. Also got a 6 from me.

Shingeki no Kyojin - Mysterious giant humanoid monsters attacking a walled city in a post-apocalyptic dystopia that also has in many ways a similar aesthetic to historical places and lots of political themes? Sounds perfect for me.

Problem here is more simple, but it's a number of things. The characters, something that is make or break the anime for me, just are inferior and recycled archetypes without much of anything more going on (at least through Season 1 and midway through Season 2, where I dropped it). Very thin and flat.

There's a sustained effort to make you care more about the plight of the humans and worldbuilding through just showing Titan atrocities against some weakly developed random schmucks, and it's just not all that interesting, because no one in this world really is.

Also, the whole style of presentation/editing is too flashy and gimmicky as to be a turn-off. Constant false setups for cliffhangers like a 1960s superhero cartoon - "Tune in next week, kids!!!!" and then minutes-long recaps to pad out each episode.

Came for the substance, but just got mostly all style. Also rated 6. There's a pattern afoot.

Aki-Sora

I came because of the premise, knowing that even though it was a partially Ecchi title, that didn't have to mean it would basically be pure hentai (all porn) with window dressing for plot and character development. Got all porn. Not entirely displeased as it was pleasant and drawn well, especially as I do have an interest in the fetish it caters to, but it's just a lot cheaper and emptier feeling than I expected. It's like really obvious junk food that sometimes tastes good, but tastes mostly overly cheap and processed and occasionally artificial. For once I'd like a more serious and heartfelt take on the subject it covers (which so far I've only gotten literally once), but it seems my thousand-year search will be in vain. 5-tier.

Spice and Wolf Season 2

This one might be the one which pisses me off the most, since although the first season was not without its faults and limitations, I did like it overall, and this premise has so much promise that you could make five, six, countless seasons worth of alternately equal parts gripping and heartwarming, novel content with. The second season seemed to mainly be an inferior retread of the first with even less plot advanced, less inter-character dynamics advanced with rehashing a lot of the same emotional beats and dialogue without improving upon them in any way, a bunch of quasi-episodic mini arcs that go nowhere and take focus off the better side of Holo and Lawrence to focus on a handful of bland characters that aren't interesting and are gone from the story 2-3 episodes later, and an unfinished cliffhanger ending. A 4 rating (whereas I had the first season at 7).

I enjoyed the bird deity,
, the shepherdess, and some nice SoL scenes of just eating and calmly navigating the medieval marketplaces and town squares, but this series seems like it could be so so much more overall and needs a lot more. Ditch the mini arcs, pointless add-on characters, and properly finish it.

Death Parade - I liked this for the most part, and it has the highest rating from me compared to anything else listed above (a 7), but it was just too episodic. I want to say it was too short to properly capitalize on and flesh out its weightier themes and topics, but there are 11, 12, 13 episode anime that can do so much more and reach amazing heights. So why introduce a bunch of things that don't receive adequate development and don't lead anywhere and keep it so constrained in an episodic format? Don't know, but it definitely took away.

There are others, but I'll leave it there for now.

Sword Art Online, definitely. Make the first arc a 24-episode season. Adjust the game mechanics so that it's more like a real MMO. Completely rework Kirito. Make him a team player, which would explain his high expertise and level. Remove his cheating and harem. Or heck, just replace him with Asuna. Focus the story on the main plot, and don't go messing around with side stories.

Re: Zero. Explain why Subaru is there. Give the show a solid plot, and resolve it at the end. Same for Overlord, with a new plot each season. Fantasy adventure shows that just ramble aimlessly get on my nerves.

There's kind of a lot but I think my biggest one is Zankyou no Terror

The concept of telling a terrorists vs police force thriller but from the terrorists' perspective was super cool. Going into it I was so excited but it kind of sucked. It bothered me because it would have been so cool if they handled it right but they didn't.
The characters got zero development and the motives behind the terrorists were presented in a way that made them boring and unimportant.
They also had a completely useless character in there for no reason. Lisa did nothing, her whole character was pointless. You could completely remove her from the story and nothing would change.

Akira.
The main plot idea was great, especially because there’s no thing as a “hero” or “villain”, just things happening from different perspectives. But maybe was the art style, and the amount of information they tried to cover that made it overwhelming and too bizarre to watch, more and more as you reach the end.
Plz don’t kill me for my opinion.

7 Seeds
When I first saw what it was about I totally loved it, post apocalyptic world with people surviving in it? And we also have a valid scientific reason for what’s happening? I’ll take it. But as I went through the episodes my disappointment grew and grew.

First thread where I can agree to almost everyone? I dislike that they skipped the tower dungeon exploring in Sword Art Online. They underestimate gamers especially mmo players who put thousand of hours to grow their characters to maximum potential.

I watched kanata no astra because I thought I can see some crazy alien stuff like Gantz.

A certain index series is just hard for me because the main male character is so annoying. Like how many season would it take to get a bit of Kazuma or Subaru's personality (character development). I hope I'm wrong because I did not continue watching after first season due to negative reception on it's continuation.

dude if Reki would have basically done Progressive in the OG story, it would have been top 5 all time, the character development and journey would have been amazing. But, one thing I should add to be fair, the original story that SAO is based on was submitted by Reki to a writing contest and there was a page count limit, which is why he skipped most of AIncrad.

@RMikami The point with Kirito cheating and skipping stuff is completely on the studio. All of that is explained in the source material. Which is annoying because people shouldn't have to go to the source material to get the plot and development. Same with Overlord and most other isekai LN's.

@WatchTillTandava what type of stuff do you like? Because you rated some of the objectively best anime of all time as mediocre. I'm curious.

@Superns18 yeah,sure.

Fate: Feels more like a hate child to me. I frikin love Type-Moon, but for Tsukihime and Kara no Kyoukai. Fate for me feels like a great idea executed poorly in every single route that has been animated. The only ones that I can say are good without me being a fanboy are Zero and Heavens Feels. Everything else have some terrible plot conveniences, or require such a deep knowledge of the verse itself that most of the time will look just like BS. So basically the idea is cool but not so much else

Vinland: It does not have a "north" for me. I don't read the manga, but I feel the series does not know where it goes or how is it going. Sure, Thorfinn is an edgelord and Askeladd feels like a more complex character (I also know Thorfinn will grow eventually), but the series feels like you are watching some pirates going nowhere, and turns out Thorfinn can't kill Askeladd unless he does it under some very weird morals (considering he is fine killing and watching women getting raped, he is somehow honorable to kill the killer of his dad). Besides that I don't feel any investment in any character besides Askeladd and Thorkell (because he feels like the embodiment of chaos). So for me (kinda the same with Fate) it is good but could be way better if the series feel more "planned". Also, Vinland was mentioned the first 4 episodes and it doesn't feel like Thorfinn have any clue or desire to go there really.

Madoka for me is pure disappointment. The impact of the series was held because a loli was decapitated. The episodes felt pointless unless at the last 3 minutes something important was revealed, and the end is just The end of evangelion (which is like the fourth anime I have seen going for the same). So yeah, lolibait with edge and "important symbolism" that ended up with one of the girls being lesbian for the other (which is very useless until the end) and then boom, goddesses of multiverses and shit.

The hectic approach and the general over-the-topness were so unbearable that to me it constitutes the best example of "it was good, but I didn't like it".
Same I really like the concept of Gurren lagaan but execution and logic of this anime is too stupid but I still enjoyed it becuz of good characters but it is far from masterpiece

@WatchTillTandava what type of stuff do you like? Because you rated some of the objectively best anime of all time as mediocre. I'm curious.

Well, first, with respect, I have to state that I wouldn't agree with and don't share the notion that any anime or any other show, film, book, video game, or any conceivable piece of art can ever be "objectively best". Everyone looks for different things in their art and entertainment.

I would say I watch a varied amount of almost everything. The only genres I'm not particularly keen on are Comedy, Sports, and Ecchi/Harem/Hentai.

There's a lot I like from a wide swathe of genres. My top five are Inuyasha, Koi Kaze, Haibane Renmei, Higurashi, and ('97) Berserk. And I've filled out another 15 favorites from 6-20 in my profile page. I think those are representative of a fair number of different genres and are among my favorite works of storytelling across all mediums.

Charlotte. The first half was alright. It had an interesting concept and a decent, slow pace that made it feel like it had so many stories to tell. It picked up the pace by the second half, which would've been okay if it didn't feel so rushed. There were parts that felt like they could've been their own story arcs or seasons but got compressed to a couple of episodes. While it wasn't awful, it really was much less than I expected and I felt like it had so much more potential.

well regardless of how low you rated Eva and Madoka, you have Inuyasha in your top 5 so you're good with me.

I'm gonna watch that this week, thanks for reminding me, was it anime original? Sometimes you have those issues unfortunately with those types.

I think Angel Beats is one of those anime with a great base story but a shitty development, I really like the concept but... you know what I mean

Even thought the comedy was good, that doesn't make an anime good.

I have to agree, it still got a 10 for me because I don't do critical evals like that, but it def lacked in terms of character development especially at the end, I really felt it as it relates to a few of the later characters who I felt we were supposed to care about, but honestly I didn't connect with them at all.

Multiple, but the most recent one has to be TPN.

I've been reading the manga since the second arc started and honestly nothing that came after could compare to the first one, the story really went downhill.

As more seasons of the anime come out i'm certain a lot of people will have the same opinion.

That's pretty much the general consensus, the type of story is completely different from where it is now, that said, I am still really excited to see it.

Domestic no Kanojo. It seemed interesting at first, but the story declined in quality after episode four.

When I watched it first a few weeks ago, I couldn't understand why people were hating on it so bad, then I read the manga and I see that it was fucking butchered, interesting topic, but poor execution for sure.

@Pakumen-So, based on your profile tho, I'm assuming you still like the VN, but just found the anime to be disappointing?

Oh yes, top one, in fact. It's effectively my favorite story in anything. Such a journey. I'm always encouraged by encountering fellow fans.

On the others though, I can understand Eva, but I thought I rated Madoka pretty high at an 8. I liked the series a whole lot. Even several entries in my own top 20 though have an 8 rating.

I was never a very harsh critic compared to some and since I usually like most of everything I watch at least to some extent due to discerning judgment about my own tastes when selecting new stuff to watch, before I got into more anime and started utilizing the rating system on MAL I would have been content in the past to just rate most of everything I watched a 9 or a 10. But since I want some differentiation in the scores and for the scores to mean something more individually in comparison to one another, I'm trying to be a little more strict about it lately and only giving the highest of high ratings to things I truly love.

I believe it adapted from a manga. I haven't read it yet. I might, now that I think about it.

To Aru Majutsu no Index (lolis, harem, unnecesary gods)
Bleach (even though, the subverted narrative is really good)
Saint Seiya (someone, please spare Next Dimension already)
Anime was a mistake. Heil Manga.

Somebody who doesn't finishes a anime doesn't haves rights to talk about it like it already ended, lol.

@WatchTillTandava That's so cool man, most kids today only know about the mainstream shonen shit from the past few years like Mob, Boku, etc. Inuyasha was my childhood, and in my opinion Naruku was the best villain of all time.
