| Can someone tell me the main steps to begin torrenting. I've never done it before and want to start, I know I need a VPN but kind of lost on which one would be best to get. (I live in the US) Also what are the average file sizes when torrenting say for one episode of 1080p anime? Thank you for anyone that is able to help! |
| You don't need a VPN, but you need a client that can download the files. I've been using BitTorrent for years now, so I could recommend that one. Second, you need to download the torrent file after you installed the client program. Horriblesubs is pretty good and has a lot of anime. Filesize can differ a lot, depending on what version of an anime you're downloading. Like, dual-audio BD-rip is much larger than a webrip, even if they're both in 1080p. But they're usually at least several hundred mb per episode in size, with some going over 1gb in size, so get some good storage if you plan on downloading a lot at once. Also, with torrents, make sure you keep torents up for others to upload until you've got a positive ratio. If your share ratio sucks, you might eventually end up having trouble downloading from some places. |
| afaik USA is ok with downloading pirated anime but not hollywood movies so you do not need a VPN if you will only torrent pirated anime try qBittorrent for software here https://www.qbittorrent.org/ |

Although, these things aren't free, and if they are, you're the product. File sizes for animated video are as Milennin says. Highly variable. Anywhere from 300mb-1.5gb per 25min episode. Many factors influence file size, such as file format, number of audio tracks (as in, sound, not the subtitles), and bitrate of both the video and audio. |
| Get6 Qtorrent, change the ip sent ot another address. Get peerblock and run that 24/7. Instal the filters on peerblock, you can even install country filters if you want. I have never had a warning/letter and there's a site where you can check to see what they know about your downloads and mine is blank. I can only assume they check the ip sent rather than the actual ip the data is sent to. |

Seconding this, qbittorrent is the best client, everything else is either harder to set up or, in the case of utorrent, has security issues. Also, you don't *need* a vpn but if you feel like getting one anyway, never get a free one. All of the information your computer sends and receives goes through a vpn, ill let you figure out why theyre profitable even if they are free. |

| You're literally 10 years too late. All the P2P giants got wiped off the grid and it's just the necros that are left. If you live in the USA where they actually enforce copyright law, then use a VPN. If you live in some other place, you're probably safe with a vanilla client like uTorrent. |

| Honestly, just find a good stream site or whatever. I've gotten so lazy that I just use certain stream sites. Also, I've never once been flagged for torrenting anime. You should be fine if you do. |

Mostly harmless unless you either reach out and end up dragging it further, or if you constantly do it in rapid succession. Even so, it's mostly for games and sometimes movies cause for whatever reason publishers are able to tell if you are pirating their thing or not (or something like that). Anime though, nobody gives a shit if you're pirating it so I think OP should be fine lol |

| qbitorrent is a good client to use. As people have said a VPN is not not needed if you are only downloading anime. I've been flagged several times but only for US movies and TV and never for anime. If they do start flagging anime ISPs give you several warnings so you can always start using a VPN after you get one. If you want something that will watch for and download your anime for you Sonarr is very easy to use. | I once torrented some movie, a month later I received a fine from some pissed of company. Told them they had the wrong IP-address. Lesson learned though. Don't torrent things. Use a VPN |
| I use utorrent and Taiga.moe paired with anilist.co and Nyaa until MAL's API is back up. so currently have to update MAL manually and I also use Radarr and Sonarr for Movies/TV Shows (IMDb,Rarbg,TPB,Yify) plus Betternet VPN so everything I watch is downloaded safely, renamed and moved automatically to my Plex Server. |

| Just a quick question about VPN security. Is it really more secure to use VPN than just directly using your ISP? Reading about VPN technology, every VPN provider states that your data is encrypted and your online activities are hidden from your ISP. So your ISP can't see what you are doing but that doesn't mean that VPN provider can't. Reading every free VPN provider privacy policy they clearly state that they collect your data and share with third parties. So how the hell is this secure if your data is being sold to unknown people? If paid VPN states that they don't collect your data that doesn't mean they don't do it. Call me paranoid. I have been torrenting movies, games, anime, you name it. Haven't received any letters from anyone about me illegally downloading stuff. I view pornography and some other nasty stuff on the internet. So what if my ISP sees that I am strangling my goose? As long my bank account is safe I honestly don't give a fuck what ISP sees about me. |
| Almost any torrent client have the option of require an encrypted connection. I use qbittorrent. Getting a torrent or magnet link can be done through TOR with obfs4. End points are visible to your ISP, but not any data passing through, so no basis for charges. The only problem is that it is possible done companies might seed the torrent, collecting the IPs is any leechers and other seeders. |
| @incognit yea, that is a bit paranoid, the data they sell to companies is mostly ad driven information like name, age, sex, address, phone number, sites you visit, keywords you use so that they can create a footprint for delivering the best ads to you or put you on some relevant email/caller lists, same as anytime you use any search engines and then start seeing ads of things you recently searched for. VPN's mainly protect against the big name music labels and hollywood movie companies that hire informants to download torrents and then save the ip numbers of other peers who are downloading/seeding it to report through your ISP's DMCA complaint forms in which your ISP especially in USA will warn you about and after several email notifications or attempts will shut off your service typically until you contact them. The VPN prevents this by encrypting data and spoofing your IP address so the informant can not report you based off of IP, but anime aside because Japan doesn't copyright complaint, Usenet is safer. |
