Not a emptiness but more like an afterburn. Some good drama like Clannad After Story and the other did left me with that feeling. If I have to say something that left me empty for quite some time is HakoMari. Not an anime though but a novel. Maybe a void left by a series means that series is so good and its difficult to say goodbye.

Shinsekai Yori surely is good. But if I have to say, it's an absurd mind-fucking anime. "Prepare your mind" before watching it would be too gentle of a warning.

I know exactly what you mean. Honestly the one that stuck with me for a while was Your Name. I love that anime. I'm going to check out HakoMari though.

For me, there are 3 that come to mind. If I were to rank them in order it would be: Berserk, Devilman Crybaby, and Domestic Girlfriend.

Honorable Mention: Your Name.
but it had a "good" ending.

Let's Discuss.

If you read the Manga Domestic Girlfriend will no longer be on the list. The whole thing turns into a shit show because the Mangaka has been trying to draw out the manga and put the most ridiculous garbage in there.

And while no anime has ever "Ripped My Soul out" or even made me cry yet, Episode 10 of Violet Evergarden is easily the closest I have EVER been. Absolutely brutal.

I agree with all the suggestions here (at least the ones I've watched out of them)

For me, that anime was Shinsekai Yori. That show had me on edge the entire time I was watching it. Even though it's been 2+ years since I've watched it and I still end up thinking about some of the stuff that happened.

Ooo I was thinking about watching that before I made this post.
Its that good though?

I really liked Shinsekai Yori because of the world-building and storytelling. It's a really good psychological horror show as well; that's probably the reason it stuck to me so well.

I know that some people didn't enjoy it because of the pace and content, so your experience might be different from mine. I don't want to say too much to avoid spoiling anything. I recommend it though!

Tbh, Darling in the franxx’s ending was so bittersweet and I didn’t know how to feel when it ended. Am I supposed to feel happy that they could finally live freely, or sad because they had to sacrifice themselves and not have the chance to live that luxurious life.

And of course, Clannad Afterstory and Angel Beats was so gut wrenching to me. I got so emotional and felt so bad for the characters like I was left thinking, what if ‘that’ didn’t happen.

Violet Evergarden and Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Wolf Children. Violet Evergarden is probably the most moving experience I’ve had with an anime. It is no exaggeration to say that every single episode I watched made me cry at some point. Utena... Utena left me a different person, I think. It ripped a portion of my soul out and put something new in it’s place. And Wolf Children gets me sad and even angry even now.

For me, Sakurasou and Toradora left me with that empty feeling that lingered for a week. I think it might’ve mostly been that they were the first 2 anime that truly resonated with me so not sure if you’d feel the same way.

I can say Clannad for sure fits the bill. Sometimes you just hit that point where you cried so much you don’t got any more tears left.

Do-do-donuts, let’s go nuts!

Violet evergarden has been mentioned by almost everybody in this thread, but it deserves it.
Even though it is manga and not an anime, Oyasumi Punpun was the saddest story that I have ever read. I am curious whether I will ever find something that will shock me more than this masterpiece.(If you have any suggestions, feel free to share them with me ^^)

grave of the fireflies. the movie RUINED me. I'm surprised with how many people said your lie in april cause that anime really didn't make me cry... but I knew the ending going into it so maybe that's why.

She said in an interview that he will eventually finish it but we dont know when, she was hospitalized for a while and only thing she put out since the hiatus was a Nana spinoff that only had few pages

I think I watched Nana a good 10 years ago and I still think about it sometimes. That show really punched a hole in me.

Similarly Violet Evergarden is probably one of the most beautiful and simultaneously painful shows from start to finish. I was genuinely deeply moved every single episode and I cried like a baby in at least half the episodes.

Another couple that haven't been mentioned.

Sunday Without God - it's a mess of a show but it doesn't pull any punches.

TegamiBachi - Another one that really hurt. The overall story is really painful at times but honestly some of the side stories just cut the legs out from under you.

She And Her Cat: Everything Flows, Death Parade, Devilman: Crybaby, Anohana all put me out of commission for a day or two. I couldn't even start another anime for few days because I was still reeling from the depression. And honestly, while not the anime as a whole, there was some soul crushing moments in Mo Dao Zu Shi as well.
