Lol Kagura is back. She still has that obsession with Kyo but the episode is somewhat more toned down than one of the earlier episodes.

Felt like a double date of sorts at the movies between Kyo, Kagura, Tohru, and Yuki. Kagura and Tohru's reactions the theater was gold LOL. I still do expect the pacing to pick up more.

Wondering what is Shigure's scheming and what is he using Tohru for? Is it really for Akito, now I'm really interested!

Kagura being back is such a fun roller coaster, damn! How strong is she to flick Kyo with just a finger! That Mogeta movie they watched seemed interesting, I would watch it XD! Too bad the date wasn't a focal point.

Sometimes Tohru is such an overprotective mother, who spoils her children too much.

Not sure I understand Shigure's motive here, what is he after? It wasn't really clear after this episode. Is he searching for something? Is he trying to recreate something? What did he witness and what is it that he holds upon a pedestal that he would be willing to goto any lengths to see his 'dream'(for lack of better work) to fruition?

Good episode though, Tohru is such a sweetie as always. :)
Was fun seeing Kagura again, always love a good Kuigimiya Rie character. xD

My video cut out at the part of Kagura (not that Kagura, this Kagura) abused Kyo. FeelsBadMan. What the fuck, Shigure. I really liked his character. I hope he isn't too evil. I don't want him to be the antagonist or something. The double date was funny. That movie was better than most actual animated films, so there was that.

This episode's pretty much the equivalent of the 2001 anime's 11th episode in that it covers chapters 15 and 16 of the manga. Nothing too big was changed or removed for this episode in adapting the manga's events. Here were changes I noticed...

-The beginning scene of the episode in the morning with Tohru and the Sohmas before school was added for the anime.
-A couple small bits of the scene where Tohru and her friends were musing over the chocolates in his locker were removed from the anime, one notable bit from Yuki being where he thought Arisa's manga cliche about Valentine chocolates wouldn't happen in real life.
-Instead of walking through the hallway and encountering Kyo as in the anime, Kyo encountered Yuki and the girls still at Yuki's locker in the manga. Plus instead of directing a punch inches from Yuki's face, Kyo punched a wall when he encountered him in the manga.
-Throughout the scenes inside the school, Yuki and the girls didn't have any extra clothes they wore in the manga.
-Some small bits of the following classroom scene also were removed from the anime. This includes Tohru thinking internally of preparing chocolates for Hatori, two girls in the classroom briefly chatting about one of them giving Kyo chocolates, the boys rooting for Kyo wanting to take bets on how many chocolates they will receive, and Shiraki-sensei teasing Kyo for receiving chocolates.
-Tohru's reaction to Kagura being outside the school was different in the manga where instead of calling out to her, Tohru immediately realized why Kyo was trying to flee the school.
-Tohru and the boys were not in their school clothes when they are at Shigure's house with Kagura in the manga. Also in this scene, there were some other small changes to it compared to the manga that include removing Yuki internally mocking Kyo for forgetting Valentine's Day was tomorrow, Kagura's eye glowing when she is intimidating Kyo into their date, and the manga visibly showing a defeated Kyo when he concedes to the double date.
-During Kyo's outburst toward Shigure, Tohru was not cleaning up the table in the manga as she was carrying clothes in one of the hallways.
-In the same scene, Shigure's face was not visible on panel when he retorted back to Kyo as the only shot shown was of his eye. Also, the flashback Kyo experiences after this has some changes in what is depicted compared to the manga.
-Some of Tohru's internal dialogue as she tries to find Kyo and then realizing something was wrong internally with him were removed from the anime. Also, her facial expression to the situation is visibly more downtrodden in the manga and Kyo's facial expressions were shown more on panel as well.
-The anime extended the small scene where Kyo lightly knocked Tohru on the head as an affectionate gesture.
-A small scene at the end of chapter 15 was removed from the anime showing Shigure teasing Kyo for doing something indecent to Tohru and Kyo getting annoyed as a result.
-Tohru and Yuki's coats weren't shown to be as heavy for the manga. Plus instead of about to get his shoes on, Kyo was watching TV as Shigure talked with Yuki and Tohru.
-Unlike the anime, Shigure seen Tohru and the boys leaving his house outside in the manga.
-Hatori and Shigure's meeting took place in a different room of the main Sohma house instead of Hatori's office in the manga. In addition, there was a housemaid tending to the two at the start of their scene in the manga and the two were shown smoking at one point during their conversation.
-The movie scene witnessed by Kyo, Yuki, Kagura, and Tohru at the theater was expanded for the anime.
-While returning home from their date, there is a small bit removed from the anime where Kagura comments that she'd like to stay for dinner and gets Kyo irritated. Also, Kyo immediately recovered from being hit in the forehead by Kagura in the manga and was being chased by Kagura again instead of being incapacitated.
-Mitsuru's reaction to Shigure avoiding his work was a little more exaggerated in the anime. Also, there were a couple removed bits of chapter 16's final scene from the anime that include Tohru showing concern for Mitsuru's well-being and Shigure saying to ignore her, as well as Haru and Momiji's reactions to receiving Tohru's chocolates.
-When Shigure seen Tohru leaving his room, she is shown to be with Kagura in the manga.
-The scenes showing Tohru hearing Mitsuru's outburst from the kitchen and Shigure recalling his childhood with his closing narration were added for the anime.

Awww - please don’t let Shigure be a bad guy - I like him! Makes me a bit worried that whatever it is will supposedly cause Yuki or Kyo to want to punch him? I’m hoping it’s not as bad as they’re making it sound - I can’t imagine Shigure doing something that would really hurt Tohru ... ?

That will be revealed in time later in the anime as saying so otherwise would be a major spoiler for now. But what I can say is that his character is quite different from the 2001 Fruits Basket anime where he was shown to be more light-hearted and caring for Tohru's well-being, even going against Akito at a couple points to protect her.

it's look like the drama is revealing it self, dark side of Shigure make it exiting don't know what he mean dirty hands but they keep serious scene and normal humor balance I don't like that in this anime

Did we really needed Kagura in this episode? This episode was about Shigure, he's after something, seems himself as someone dirty or won't hesitate to do whatever he has to, and I want to know what is he up to.
And yeah, the trash can full of valentine's chocolates was funny.

felt kinda uneventful, but also really informative. i didn't really suspect shigure to have a dark side, but i can see where it ties in to his character (him being a loyal dog and stuff). i'm excited to see where this goes.

gotta be honest, kagura kinda gets on my nerves. i get the purpose of her character and stuff, but i just don't really like her i guess.

I loved this episode so much! I think they did a great job adapting it from the manga, where as so much had been cut in the original anime. The double date was adorable, and the Shigure-Hatori conversation was as mysterious and intriguing as I hoped it would be.

Looking forward to next weeks episode being back at the regularly scheduled time. :-)

Great episode!

Shigure is not as easy-going as he seems, just like I predicted, but it seems as though there’s something bigger behind the scenes that he’s orchestrating. I wonder if they’re all really just for Akito and I’m really curious to know more about what he meant by “I’m the person that cares most about you after all, Akito”. I wonder if this is like some kind of a reference to him being a Dog, as in loyalty to Akito and whatnot. He’s been my favourite character among the male cast so far but I always knew something was off about him and well looks like I’m right on the mark. I’m especially curious as to how Yuki came to the same conclusion too.

That aside, it’s a pity that the double date didn’t get the optimal focus this episode but I suppose that’s fine. Kagura’s monstrous flick though and that assistant of Shigure’s xD.

Looking forward to next episode and the regular broadcasting (for subs to come earlier as such)!

Ahhh this episode perfectly summed up Fruits Basket. Mysterious, lighthearted, heartbreaking and so on.

I'm also glad that they're portraying Shigure like he's supposed to be this time around. Also, I can finally relax now that it's confirmed that this will run for 63 episodes.

FMA Brotherhood was 64 episodes
Fruits Basket Brotherhood is 63

Can you please tell me where I can read the confirmation how many episodes it will be? I don't think 63 episodes is a good thing, it means they will leave something out, because manga has 136 chapters, and if they did 2 chapters pro 1 episode, they would need 68 episodes, but sometimes they do only 1 chapter pro episode, so they would need more episodes. I was hoping for 3 seasons of 24-26 episodes, 72 episodes sounds much better than 63. I'm worried now. T__T

If Kagura could just disappear and never return, that would be great. I've seen a lot of annoying characters in anime over the years, but she's definitely up there with the most annoying of all. And what a surprise that Shigure, the guy who has seemed way too nice and friendly while also obviously being very close to Akito, is actually seemingly evil (or at least antagonistic to a degree).

Also, is there anyone in this show's main cast who doesn't have a dark past? And will any of these be revealed any time soon, or will we get another cour's worth of foreshadowing and shoujo hijinks before that goes anywhere?

The "cuckoo phenomenon" thing with Yuki's chocolates was pretty funny, I will admit.

Nope, they will transform into animals if they have physical contact with anyone except a member of the Souma family, and she's part of the Souma's.

At the stage that the anime industry is in, you should just be content with 63 episodes. This means that they won't have to rush too much. I was afraid that they we're gonna try to squeze it into 50 episodes but 63 is really good.

FMA is a 27 volume manga while Fruits Basket is at 23. 63 episodes will do it justice the way that bones did FMA Brotherhood justice.

Thanks for the link. I thought it was a more important person confirming how many episodes, not just a voice actor (and a dub VA, what's more). I'm gonna still hope for more episodes. :P I know that nowadays it's a big thing for an anime to have so many episodes, especially for a shoujo anime, but since Furuba is very popular, I was hoping for a faithful adaptation, especially since the mangaka is involved this time. And I heard FMA Brotherhood was cutting stuff from the manga, I don't want them to cut anything important from Furuba this time. :/

It seems that people here have a mixed opinion of Kagura in general. I don't blame them for that, but if you're hoping that she'll just up and disappear, then you should just stop that silly wishful thinking. She's annoying at times, but in this episode she was less annoying than the last time she appeared, so I guess that's a small improvement......maybe. ^^;

Aside from the valentine's double date with Kagura, Kyo, Yuki and Tohru, this episode also showed Shigure showing some of his true colours. I can't really say much more than that, otherwise it would be in the major spoiler territory, but he's still one of my favourite characters in Fruits Basket, so I'm sure the anime only viewers here will enjoy more of his backstory and character development in the future. =)

One thing that he does a lot, though, is to cause so much grief to his VERY unfortunate editor, Mitchan. The poor girl deserves a nice, big hug. =3

Overall, this was another great episode, and hearing that the reboot will be 63 episodes long in total is very reassuring to my ears. =)

Good episode, much better than the old anime where they left most of it out. I was happy to see Mayuko-sensei (although we saw her walking with Kana behind Hatori in ep 7). And Hatori's editor Mitsuru looks different in this anime, like Motoko-senpai too (hair and eye color), that's interesting. And this time Shigure called Momiji Momicchi, unlike in episode 8.

Also, like I thought, they didn't show Hatori and Shigure smoking, they were just drinking tee. That's 3rd time they removed cigaretes (Kyouko smoking in chapter 1, Shigure smoking in chapter 6, Hatori and Shigure smoking in chapter 16). But they did show the editor wanting to commit suicide with a scalpel and they showed ''scary'' knives 2 times before (ep 1 Hanajima and ep 4 Kagura), so go figure about this censorship stuff.

Shigure's actions and thoughts sure can make you wonder. There's something he wants so badly, most certainly something to do with Akito, that he doesn't mind using people and lying to them to get it. He doesn't care about getting hurt by 'reaping what he sowed' in the process either. This is worrying, since I don't know how far he is willing to go, but also somehow admirable and exciting. There would be no fun if none of them were "dirty", but even if he is up to using Tooru to further his aims, it still seems like she is getting to him with her purity. I also really liked the analogy between him and a water ripple.

Then there's the rift between Kyou and Yuki, which seemed to be getting smaller thanks to Tooru, but it seems that it isn't this easy to erase whatever happened between them in the past, probably because of who they are in the zodiac. I'm glad Tooru understood him, and said that it's "okay" to hate Yuki though. If they are going to become friends it needs to happen because both of them want to and are ready for it. Well, another really good episode.

I don't think the show is concerned about censoring "inappropriate" material - just smoking. Japan is doing a big push right now to get people to smoke less, especially with the upcoming Olympics and wanting to create a better public image. I attend a university in Japan and they are planning to completely ban smoking by the start of 2020. Since there is such a public push to discourage smoking right now the anime is probably falling in line with that in order to not create any backlash. Blood and suicide and trauma is fine though, lol. (& necessary to telling this story, while smoking is just a little detail you can leave out).

Was i the only one who was actually kinda heartbroken by Shigure's confession in this ep? I feel like he's a deeply sad character and i wanna know what it is he's planning. I don't want him to hurt Yuki, Kyo & Tohru but if he says he doesn't care about hurting them to get to his goal then there has to be a good reason.

This anime is so cute and light hearted by it really has some sad and painful undertones 😢

Well, considering Kagura’s obsession for Kyo and it being on Valentine’s Day, it would fit her character to want to go on a date with Kyo.

I thought this episode was fine. At least Kagura’s appearance gave a reason for the four of them to be out of the house for Shigure to (partially) reveal his scheme (or rather is scheming).

Very interesting episode. We still know very little about the Souma's and their "curse" or whatever, but we're getting more about the family members and the suspect actions they take because of it. It's like all the older members plus the head have seen some shit.

Kagura was a lot less annoying this ep, so I was pleasantly surprised by that.

Even as a fan of the original series, I've never been too fond of Kagura. I think her trope is very mid to late 90s, early 2000s. I appreciate her as a character and what she offers to the table but she's always been over the top for me. I can understand why others may dislike or even hate her.

Shigure's intentions will be revealed soon. I am already excited for the next episode, I am always excited for Fruits Basket since I know this is only the first season and there will be more.

like the episode... showing a little more about Shigure true colors (without revealing anything, XD) ... and the first half have that interesting scene with Kyo

more scene with the teacher and first apparition of Mitchan (really like those two, despite being minor characters ^^' )

By the way, I may have missed something but shouldn't Kyo have transformed in this scene ?

Nope, they will transform into animals if they have physical contact with anyone except a member of the Souma family, and she's part of the Souma's.

actually, the transformation don't occur only between two members of the zodiac...

of course, all the members are Souma ^^' but there's plenty of Soumas that aren't part of the zodiac, and they can "active" the transformation...

Kana, the girl that Hattori was in love in the past, was a member of Souma family and he transformed when she hugged him

No surprise that Valentines day is a scary day for the Soumas. Kyo really seems to not like Valentines day.

That teacher rocks though, I like her.

Honestly loving the interactions between the Soumas. Tohru seemed so happy to go on a (double) date.

Shigure shows a bit more of his true self, I wonder what he is planning to use Tohru for and what his dream is truly about. Definitely an interesting development for the story.

Nice episode ^^ but how come she have a pink uniform? It's cute but, is the school supposed to have two uniforms? I'm confused.

The school has 2 uniforms, summer uniform (white shirt with blue skirt/pants) and winter uniform (blue shirt with blue skirt/pants). Tooru is wearing a pink sweater over her uniform, because she's probably cold with only the uniform. Yuki is wearing a gray sweater and Hanajima a black thing similar to a sweater. It's seen in a lot of anime that people wear sweaters over their uniform when it's cold.
