I'll be the first guy to recognize that there is no 'perfect' anime and that all anime are flawed in some way. But the more I traverse the wasteland that is MAL, the more I see people who's highest scores are 9s. I don't quite understand this way of thinking, Why wouldn't you at least rate your favorite show a 10/10? Frankly, this baffles me more then most anything else on this site.

I suppose that's somewhat plausible but even if that's the case, why not like.... just change it assuming they ever do find it?

This is pretty much what I did. Sometimes you just come across a series so good (or in my case, life-changing) that you adjust your entire scoring system. I only have one 10 right now, but that's because I just don't feel right putting anything next to that show, as it's clearly a cut about the rest in my eyes. I may give more 10s in the future, but they'd have to be able to live up to my current standard for the score.

See, this is way more understandable. I don't usually question it if I only see 1 10/10, because that makes perfect sense in my eyes. What I really have difficulty understanding is why people would just refuse to give 10s for whatever reason. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Yup, I agree with you. In my case, it was simply a matter of standards changing, but to never give 10s? Eh, to each their own I suppose.

I have two 10s (well technically 3, but one anime was two seasons), because the animes I gave 10s to really felt perfect and I had no complaints. My only complaint about Kingdom is that we don't have a season 3 and 4 yet lol. But otherwise, I really loved the series and I find it really impressive when a show is so good I have absolutely nothing that I think could've improved it. And my standards for historical TV shows are very high so the fact that Kingdom met my standards perfectly made me very happy.

Depend in what people mean with their 10/10.. If you define 10/10 as "Perfect" of course there is no perfection..
"Masterpiece" is different from "Perfect", even masterpieces are not perfect.. But also remember that "Masterpieces" and "Favorites" are different things too ...

I can't speak for others, but for me, I don't use 10 because it doesn't fit into my rating system.

My rating system is actually a five-point rating system (with in-betweens filled in if I really feel like it). It goes like this: 1 = hate, 3 = dislike, 5 = meh, 7 = like, 9 = love. The top score is 9. If I used a 10 I would have to decide on something to put there. My favorites don't quite fit actually because some of them I've rated 8 or 7 or even 6.

I could retool my list to go from 2-10 instead of 1-9. But then I would be missing a 1.

There's no such thing as a 10/10 masterpiece. But this is the wrong way to think about it. Even though there are only 10 ratings on MAL, there isn't just 10 levels of greatness in all anime. The rating system is a form of aliasing. You're taking an infinite number of levels and compressing it to 10. Therefore, the 10 rating doesn't just represent 10/10, but some number X_10/10, where X_1 < X_2 < X_3 < X_4 < X_5 < X_6 < X_7 < X_8 < X_9 < X_10 < 10, and X_n is the lowest score that satisfies a rating.

For me, the 10 rating is something like 9.3/10 to 10/10.

I have 30 (of 305) anime that I rated a 10. Those can all be considered my AllTimeFavorite for now. Some 9's can be on that list as well. To me, finding something HORRIBLE is harder than finding people with low mean score.

Like there are people able to recognize the greatness of a work without having "emotions" for it, there are others (or the same) who can be distant enough of something they like to understand it is in no way a "chef-d'oeuvre".

@Dinoceros What's an "ATF" if it's not an AT-field/Anti-terror field?

Hum, my favourites are not necessarily the best things I ever watched. Independently of what I think their value is, I have a special link (tenderness/fondness?) for them.
Indeed, Gunbuster is credited for the beginning of the bouncing breasts (maybe falsely, though?)

People just have extremely high standards I guess. Plus a lot of people compare their anime to others that they seen n be like "Well. If this is a 10 then whatever I watch must match up to that to be a 10"

I personally judge pretty much everything individually, except sequels and prequels.

I completely agree. It is very difficult to judge anime When comparing it to another. some animes are just better and other categories. for example I thoughly enjoyed both Stiens Gate and Gurren Lagann, However these 2 anime should never be compaired for ome to me is comedy gold, and the other is emotional growth

Why do some people give a lot of 10/10s?
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

Refusing to give 10/10 is certainly an odd choice. That said, I'm probably closer to that than the people who give 10/10 willy nilly to every 1 in 5 shows.

My rating tend to follow a pretty steep normal distribution, so at the very least I could say 9s still definitely are solid and 8s have somewhat general appeal or would cater to incredibly to people with similar tastes to mine. I don't necessarily have to give 10s to signify that I like the show a lot, given that the distribution speaks for itself.

Probably because they think that no anime can be perfect, and a 10/10 rating to them means that the score can only be given to an anime that is flawless, but since no anime can ever be perfect/flawless to them, they end up never giving a 10/10 to any anime.

The most common reason I've heard is "nothing can get full points".
Which I disagree with so hard.

The scale is useless if the highest point is unreachable. Then you are basically using the scale-1, which in turn means you shouldn't even use that, since scale max-1 is the highest you could give.

I rate my fav show just like how I rate the other shows, cutting some slack or giving them more than what they deserve just because they're my fav is being biased/unfair. unless you think they deserve 10s which is fine, depending on your standards.

Because for some reason, people believe that their OPINIONS must be objective and fair.

"10 means perfection and nothing is perfect". So even if someone enjoys something a lot, they still may low-ball it because of that voice telling them that "it's not perfect" or "somebody else may not like this show."

Personally I think it's unnecessary. We're human, and we hold biases and opinions. The people who never rate a 10 would be like those English teachers that never give an A. We already know nothing is perfect, but if you enjoy it, and you see a lot of effort, just give a 10.

Our opinions don't need to be fair or unbiased.

Only 8% of my shows are 10's and none of them are theoretically perfect. But, I connected with them to the point where they felt like 10s.

Another score-related thread. Why should people give 10s? Is it required to be an anime fan? If people don't feel like an anime is a 10 for them they won't give it. Simple as that.
