He was stabbed with the energy blade. In the manga he cut sliced on his fat belly. Either way the only damage he took was from the fall an is just a two stories mansion. You may break a bone but you will not die unless you land on your head.

What's got me more curious is the sense in those guards... It quite clearly showed three guards observing his fall and checking on him? I'd figured they'd have checked their lord's body for a pulse or some sign of life and all that before claiming death, but I guess they really just took one look at their lord-- who as you said, dropped just "two stories-- and said "yup he dead, let's abandon this place and retreat"...
I do not know what to say. In the manga most guards were either trying to stop the people at the gate or rushing to search for intruders. Maybe they were in panic. When shit hits the fan hired mercenaries do not check to see if you are dead. Also maybe they were glad the guy died. He was not that liked.

lol at the bad old geezer getting rekt'd by the bad CG he summoned, tbh Raph should have at least stabbed him once with her non-magic sword to at least give him a taste of the pain he inflicted on all those demi-humans. *sigh* guess our Racoon waifu works better as a pacifist...

She sliced his belly not stabbed. Also I agree with the absolut forgiveness thing but if they would not have done that some would have reed. Look at tge previous ep comments. And is not a bad compromise. She sliced him with the energy sword not because she wanted to spare him but because she was unabke to get to the physical one.

it bullshit on many level, first in manga naofumi asked others not to do anything and let raphtalia decide what to do bcuz she deserved it but here he goes asking not to kill him thats bullshit! again in manga raphtalia starts with stabbing his shoulder that is reasonable bcuz of those bad memories and anger while here she did nothing. and yet again even after the guy attacks her again she is not the one that pushes him out of windows.

edit: u know whats funny about the whole thing? ,im not a manga reader i usually read the manga after anime just to see the differences but after ep 14 i read the next chapter just to see if raphtalia hurts the guy or not and i was happy when i saw she actually tries to kill him in manga. and i thought ok next episode isn't gonna be a Naruto crap and im so disappointed right now.

I liked this anime's concept when it started but now it's becoming more and more typical shounen where nothing interesting happens and no one gets killed instead they are saved somehow, that's where I'm seeing it is heading.

So should someone tell him about Keel's gender then? It's not like some huge plot point in the story or anything like that.
oh ik about keel just saying no one mentioning about him at all in this discussion. "Is he joining the party?" But if anime intruduced him has a girl i bet we would see people yelling harem!

I still see most crits here are really full of crap, not all of them theres 3 or 4 who have given valid points here and there . Again i think anime wasnt adapted that well doesnt have the same impact i fell with the LN or even the manga who i started a few days ago. But i still think the anime is good and i love it just not perfect

I know what you mean but I do not think is so bad. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the music they put when they were in the cells. About Naruto it was bad on so many levels. I do not see why you compare that with this minor change.

Pretty emotional episode.

Raphtalia’s backstory was very painful to watch, those cunts were simply torturing these Demi-humans for fun and that’s absolutely outrageous. We’re seeing plenty of similar backstories especially as of late but this definitely was an instance where the emotional impact was there. Raphtalia trying to keep a smile of her face during harsh times and that instance where she asks herself how to smile was pretty darn depressing. Naofumi isn’t pleased to see such things in the slightest too, hopefully he will be able to change things eventually. About the royal (who’d unironically get crushed by his summoning) though, totally blown away how this fat lump made it out alive after falling from his mansion. Looks like we’ve got Round 2 v a CGI monster upcoming next week, looking forward to seeing how it goes especially more so given its title.

Such a strong and emotional episode, but WTF that it detracts from the experience. But that's possibly that even though I'm an anime-only, the other sources (manga, LN) feel close to home than this mostly original episode.

Sure, this episode revolves around Raphtalia, but it seems like the writers really try to concoct such a BS story, add to many who have commented about the writing, it only fuels emotions, not good writing. But due to this, finally got a closure on how Raphtalia started her journey the way she does, without a smile. *Oh God, no more Egao no Daika moments*

Idol is the result of the continuation of the corrupt Melromarc Kingdom, not evidenced by Melty, because why would someone want to let young children know how bad this situation was for years.

And that cliffhanger...not another T-Rex in CGI again. And Idol got crushed in poetry. How ironic.

Oh wait...that Swedish insert song. WOW now that adds up the emotions to an insane degree. Props to Kevin Penkin and the singer, did not expect that but with the clarifications, definitely warranted.

Was that A CG T-Rex?What, weird....

I'd divide the episode in 2 parts
The first part is dedicated to Raphtalia's decision and character, but everything seems a little pointless if, in the end, Idol dies because of the CG T-Rex, also the whole argument "I don't want to be like you" can work, but in this situation kind of feels out of place, i understand why she did that, but understanding it doesn't mean it's good

The second part is Raphtalia's backstory, and i noticed some really good directed parts here:The use of color, how it cut back to Raphtalia walking in the prison and to her past like she was afraid to face it. It wasn't overdone or anything, and it was genuinely hard to watch Rifana struggle to be alive and then dying because of starving, let's appreciate the voice actors for a minute, and the soundtrack too

I think my biggest problem is that this episode tried to tell 2 different stories that did not blend well together

They just threw all of Raphtalia's development out the window with Idol being alive at the end. The whole emotional scene, and speech from Naofumi, was rendered pointless. Unnecessarily forced drama. It was stupid of her to blame herself anyway, but then they make her "growth" all pointless anyway. This author has got no clue.

Poor Raphtalia. Her backstory showcasing how her village was torn apart from the catastrophe wave, then they were carted away to become slaves to the pig-headed Idol. Her will and resolve took a savage beating from it all that she forgot how to genuinely smile again.

This was the closure that she needed from her past. She and the rest of Naofumi's group were able to rescue all of the surviving demi-humans trapped underground, but sadly her best friend, Rifana, died quite a while back since it was just her skeleton remaining. This was also a great moment to see how caring and honest Naofumi was when he was consoling Raphtalia and he did a great job with that, too. =)

As for Idol, despite falling from the room during his desperate clash against Raphtalia, he somehow lived and to make matters worse, he was able to summon a beast, a CGI T-rex by the looks of it, and it proceeded to step on him and, HOPEFULLY, kill the scumbag this time. XD

I can't really blame certain users here about their dissatisfaction about Raphtalia choosing not to kill Idol when she could've done. Yes, it might be a trope that's been done plenty of times, but honestly, the trope makes more sense for her character. She doesn't want to drop to his level by killing him out of revenge and Naofumi shares that same opinion too.

Some people would go as far as killing another in order to avenge people that they've lost that were close to them, but others would choose the pacifist route to sparing them and letting them live on for the rest of their pathetic lives, trying to atone for their sins. Raphtalia choosing the easier option would be, in my opinion, very out of character for her, so choosing the more common choice of sparing Idol was the right thing for her to do.

If I was in her position for the same reasons as her, would I be able to slay Idol for what he did? No, I wouldn't and I assume the same goes for most users on this discussion thread, including the complainers themselves about the trope in question. Think about that more thoroughly before you complain about the trope in the future.

Rant aside, this was a great episode. I'm hoping that Naofumi's group doesn't take too long in taking down the T-Rex, though.

Poor Rifana-chan, I was wondering if she was still alive in the last episode and now I got my answer. At least Kill-kun is still alive, he might turn into a bishounen if he levels up.

Rifana-chan dying broke my heart. Didn't think it would but it did. The animation was meh as usual and the villain, Idol, doesn't look threatening since he's fat, ugly and looks like a discount background character. Him getting stomped on was not enough, he should've been mauled.

I have to shit on a few things such as Raph crying about killing someone, you killed (well almost) the person who enslaved all the demi-lolis in your village! Jesus Fucking Christ, he's the reason poor Rifana-chan turned into bones-chan. Sad attempt to make her seem pure and innocent. She's already lusting after Naofumi, making her vengeful and cold-blooded, especially when it comes to people like Idol, wouldn't hurt.

How did FUB survive being stabbed and falling out of a third floor window like that? Is he a demihuman of some sort too?

Probably the layers of fat protecting him. (Or plot) Im not medical person but seems like it could cushion you. I find it funny that even though he survived, the monster squashed him like a bug like it was nobody's business, so quick and effortlessly.

Katojana said:
extremely disappointed about the fat guy.
The manga version was 1000% better...
(FYI: In the manga raphtalia immediatelly stabs him in the shoulder, then they have the talk and ultimately raphtalia stabs him with the magic sword, actively pushing him out the window with naofumi rescuing her from falling)
The rest of the episode was great

Honestly that sounds a lot more satisfying. I hate the troupe of "I'm not going to kill you because that makes me just as bad as you." Like no, you are saving hundreds of demi humans but killing him. Just because you scared him a little doesn't mean he will stop completely/forever.

Aniteku said:
Damm what an episode. My only question is how best girl really dint grow to hate humans? She too pure for that world. If they treat demis this way here and in silvet they do the same to humans i wont be suprise if there a war between this countrys

Possibly due to the shield hero being human himself and that the noblemen who used to help or rule their land and was kind to them was also human. And i assume that she wasn't in captivity for long since she was only captured when the waves started and Naofumi saved her shortly after.
Cleckeroo said:
Great episode again! Love how the studio enhance the back story of Raphtalia but when it comes to the scene where Raphtalia is going to slice Idol is kinda cliche. I like those scenes tbh because they have a point, the "If you kill him right now, will it satisfy you?" type of line has a really strong message.

Melty realizing what's really happening in the country is really important because she can have a motivation to work hard if she become the Queen one day.

Completely forgot about that. I think it's important for her to see so she can report it back to the Queen and so she can do something about it when she is Queen too.

The backstory for Raph was p sad for me. She was best friends with this girl for a long time it seems and was the last of her family. I was pretty surprised that they showed her corpse and felt sad when I seen the tiny little flag. Someone mentioned that Raph was surprised when she seen the food with tiny little flags too. Maybe this is why. I think it was important that one of her friends survived to give her hope. I understand where she is coming from with her "killing" her friend and feel that even though she is now technically an adult, she is still pretty much a child and is still learning. I think it should be noted that the other girl was basically dead when Raph left. I think no matter what she would have died in like a week or month. She did still save some demi humans which i think is important for her to remember. It's a shame she couldn't save them all but that's what always happens. People will die regardless of how much you do.

I don't understand the whole child torture porn thing and the term that's been used beginning with i (now that im looking for it i cant find it) but if someone can explain the troupe and the phrase id be much appreciative. Im still quite new to anime so I dont understand/know all the troupes. I also didn't see the chains still on the corpse but wouldn't that make sense? Why wouldn't she not still have them on or are people more annoyed that it was shown, giving people more content to work with?

*Edit: Quotes got messed up*

Why the hell were there Swedish singing in between 18:00 and like 20:48 in a japanese anime?

Right?
At first I didn't notice, but then as time went by I was like, *Is that a Swedish word I just heard?*.
Very bizarre indeed. Why would they even have a random Swedish song in an Isekai set in a medieval parallel world? Maybe because it sounds... foreign? I have no idea. I want to find the lyrics though, because it sounded like a lovesong or something (from the words I could hear, since it wasn't that easy to hear). Well, well, at least Sweden is getting some recognition from Japan, that is always cool.

(If someone finds the song, I would be happy if you shared it, because I want to to hear how well/badly it fits with the moment in the anime).

Kevin Penkin makes music for other animes'as well, e.g Made on Abyss. Maybe he somehow found out about Maria Andersson and her extremely high pitched voice from somewhere (or maybe it was the other way around?), a d they decided to work together? Haven't found the song on YT yet, but if you search both their names you'll find other wondrous songs from them 😊

That was absolutely disgusting and disrespectful.
What does the director/writer get from robbing poor Raphtalia of her revenge? What's more, robbing her from basic emotions?
"I won't kill you because I'll be just like you" Is the most retarded line in anime.
So appearently the shield hero's curse is SAD instead of rage, and Raphtalia is unable to hurt somebody because she grew as a person.
EVERY time this anime deviates from the source it's messing with the basics of the main characters. Who let this happen?
I'd be fine with small changes (I'm sorta glad they cut the torture scene) but not the backstory or the roots of their behavior.
I don't even care about the shitty cgi dinosaur, just don't mess up what makes the characters what they are.
They won't let Naofumi tell the Queen to execute the King and Bitch now, won't they?

By far the worst episode of the show. It doesn't even make sense to begin with. The words Naofumi says to Raphtalia go 1000000% against his characters arc. It basically destroys what he has been doing for 14 episodes. Now the shows has nothing to grab on. The only reason he said this was just for them to go to the basement and for the T-Rex to be summoned at the end by the "evil" dude. And thanks to this Raphtalia's backstory didn't even hit me a little bit.
Also, you are telling me that a retarded fat dude can break a seal that was created by the heroes in the past to seal a monster? Nice plot device. It's time for another cg monster battle.

EDIT: Found this Reddit comment that basically summons up my thoughts: https://bit.ly/2KMlAsp

en bortglömd stad.
Som ingen minns,
förutom jag.
Helt utan våld,
Står (???).
Under natt och tak.
I varje träd,
är sången kvar.
Och jag kan känna,
hur skogen gråta.

(Rapthalia and Rifana talking. A few lines cannot be heard.)

En hand grep tag i min,
och där var du.
Nära (???) min (kropp?).

20:42-20:50 (Couldn't understand the last line.)

English
Another time,
when everything remained.
Your frivolous comfort,
it was all that was.
Am I stuck,
between the winds.

18:27-18:35 (Can't hear because naofumi is too loud)

Under your (???).
And I can hear,
the crickets playing.
The night (???).

18:49-19:05 (Keel too loud & Singer too quiet.)

Another life,
a forgotten city.
As nobody remembers,
except for me.
Completely without violence,
Stands (???).
Under night and roof.
In every tree,
the song remains.
And I can feel,
how the forest cry.

(Rapthalia and Rifana talking. A few lines cannot be heard.)

One hand grabbed mine,
and there you were.
Near (???) my (body?)

20:42-20:50 (Couldn't understand the last line.)

I'm pretty sure the song is about Raphtalia's life before, and after the wave arrived and destroyed her village, and up until Naofumi bought her off the slave trader. Beautiful song in my opinion.

A very emotional and sad episode, touched my heart. my eyes went full of tears. It is a great pity what happened to Rifana, Raphtalia's childhood friend 😞. Well, they are tragedies that make stories more interesting. It is a relief that they have been able to save these semi-humans and that among them is one of Raphtalia's childhood friends, Keel.
On the other hand, Idol, the fat bastard, died under the leg of the same monster that he released. That STUPID deserved it !.
Two good things about that, the first is that he died in the most pathetic way and second, that Raphtalia will no longer have to carry the burden of his death.
And regarding the end, ... WHAT? A DINOSAUR? It just did not cross my mind, what are you telling me? xD. Do not tell me that the Philolial Queen is that dinosaur 😯.

"If I had not met you I would have fled from this world without trusting anyone, I am here because you believed in me." Great Naofumi 👏.

"Smile when it costs you the most."
I love the character of Raphtalia.

crazy ep with getting a lot of back story on Raphtalia and the people she knew

that guy crazy how he survived the stab and also falling out a window but thankfully that dino finished him off that piece of shit

also i figured the one that got left behind when Raphtalia got taken would somehow be alive but of course the other one would be dead but i guess he just came a lot later

anyway looking forward to the next ep see how they fight against this dino should be interesting

A couple of quick points:

1. Raphtalia suffers from PTSD. No big leap here--she was imprisoned, tortured, and enslaved, all of which are sufficient trauma to induce the condition. Is her behaviour consistent with that? Pretty much. In a medieval world, most people don't travel very far from their village and she was taken to an entirely different lord's territory after capture, so it is possible that she has no idea where Idol's dungeon was, even if she knows roughly where her original village was. Criticism of Raphtalia for doing or not doing certain things fail to take these factors into account.

2. At some point, Naofumi is going to change--it's baked into the story. Edgy, angry, loner is not a role that's going to be sustained over the entire story, at some point Naofumi will overcome his PTSD and will learn to trust again. Raphtalia is an important part of that process. That being said, there was a divergence from the LN/Manga in what Naofumi said to Raphtalia, and how the fight scene went. One of the commentators has given an example of how this might cause story complications in the future via a spoiler, and I think that might be a valid concern, on the other hand I don't think this is would rule out that future event happening.

3. Raphtalia only wounds Idol in LN/Manga--she doesn't kill him. In the end, the wounded Idol releases the T-Rex, just like he does in the anime. In both versions Raphtalia struggles with Idol: in LN/Manga she strikes him with real sword, in anime she strikes him with mana sword (as real one is out of reach). The major difference between the two treatments appears to be between Naofumi telling Raphtalia it's her decision (LN/Manga) and Naofumi telling Raphtalia that killing Idol won't accomplish anything (anime). This does not strike me as a pivotal point in plot development, more like an artistic choice in presenting the adaptation.

4. The more important points of plot development are probably the continuing indication that the Church is one of the major antagonists in the story and will have to be dealt with, and increased involvement with the demi-humans and the issue of discrimination. This is more likely to affect future story development than minor differences in dialogue or how the fight scene finishes.

5. The data shows what the data shows. The high score for this show reveals that a lot of people like it. The most obvious answer to the question "Why is this show rated so high?" is simply that. You may feel strongly that people are wrong, but in the end all it means is that they are looking for different things in their anime than you are.

How did we go from this

To what the anime did? they just had to make Raph and Nao some nice pair BS.
Naofumi never said anything like that because he himself is supposed to be bitter about the BS that happened to him, now I only wonder how they'll adapt "that" part later on when he himself is put in a similar situation.
I've beeen ok with the anime for 3-4 eps now despite the changes they did but this change is something I cannot tolerate.

Naofumi starts opening up more during the Carmira arc and especially the Spirit Turtle arc.

I agree that it was an artistic choice, but the choice will also lead to characterization inconsistencies. You can't have Naofumi be a practical, morally grey MC while also having him be a moral arbiter at the same time. The LN/manga is consistent at portraying Naofumi as a practical character and his practicality extends to Raphtalia in the case between her and Idol. She intended to kill him on the premise that there would be less victims like her with Idol out of the picture.

In addition, the Naofumi's claim that killing Idol will make Raphtalia no better than him is a false equivalence. One took pleasure in torturing demi-human children to death because of his racism (species-ism??) while the other intended to kill (in the LN/manga) a corrupt noble to prevent future victims.

My God, I've never been so annoyed at an episode, and I never post to anime discussions, but this episode alone will make Shield Hero go down a whole rank for me. How many times does it have to elicit pity repetitively over the same event? We got it the first time when she was dying. And what the hell is that, "I killed a person so I'm the same as him" crap that propelled the most obvious cliched plot device that was visible from a mile away, that he will somehow survive and summon a demon? This episode killed all characterizations of the Shield Hero and Raphtalia as rational human beings.

I could go further and say that when Raphtalia stood on the soap box and told everyone to rebuild the village, her village must be filled with such tools, like "omg you're right, I've never thought about that before! It took a little girl to bring me to my senses."

This whole episode was just scene after scene of third rate sob story melodrama like Naruto-Sasuke flashbacks.

"Killing Idol won't accomplish anything"... Uh, yes it will! It will prevent him from summoning a T-Rex. And it will also prevent him from torturing future demis.

"I'll let you live and repent." Yeah, that's exactly what he's going to do. Repent. Like Jesus fucking Christ. Is the entire party mentally 12?

I really enjoyed this episode, one of the best so far in my opinion. I'm not looking forward to them battling a cgi T-Rex next week though.

Hot take naru sasu was better. The manga starts nice and dark and the show should have interjected that back in. Something like you don’t deserve a clean death etc etc

Wonder here this season ends

There is so much wrong with this show on so many levels. This episode is epithomy of every stinking crap this anime barfed on us.

1. Cliches. "If I kill him, I'll be like him". Whaaat? Girl, you've killed hundreds of monsters and thousands of relatively innocent wildlife. Right here, right now you face the real monster in human form. He is in fact far worse than any lizard thingie or undead or slime ball because he could do better but he [i]has chosen[/] to be a slaver and a sadist. Killing an undead would save many lives and make the world a better place. Killing that fat garbage would do the same.
Here, we have a classical false morale dilemma.

2. Morale. It's not okay to treat demi humans so horribly, it's not okay to enslave them FOR ANYBODY ELSE BUT THE EDGELORD HERO. Apparently, it's okay to have agreements with some slaver guy and it's okay to keep a slave as long as you're a protagonist.

What's worse, Edgelord Hero still haven't released Raphtalia from slavery. This show is clearly slavery apologism because this story tells us that it's okay to let someone to be enslaved as long as you don't trust anybody, boohoo.

3. Storytelling. EVERYTHING is about Shiled Hero and his harem. They even put Shield Hero as some holy symbol of hope in the dreams of two little girls (why does it have to be Shield Hero, why everything has to be about this hero, not some other hero?) and they even turned this tragic story into goddamn harem ("i wanna be Great ShieldHero-sama's waifu", says little loli because reasons).

They tried to squeeze some tears out of me this whole episode but all I could do was screaming internally. This show is garbage.

This author has got no clue.
read the source material first then blame the author. the anime is fucking ruining the series

My bad. I just assumed the adaptation was accurate. Can you tell me the big differences that are ruining it?

Decent episode - Raphtalia's a great character so I had no problem delving deeper into her past. The ending though was pretty lame. The slave-torturing noble was still alive? Then he used the power of the church to unleash a beast that was just a dinosaur wearing armor? Really, the writer could have done much better than that.

The only way for demi humans is to grow by leveling up or do they grow by age like normal humans? Because Raphtalia looks way older than her childhood friend.
Other than that, the episode was good with.
I hope the CGI won't be too disappointingnext episode.

Well for one they didn't eat properly so their growth is severely diminished.

I wasn't prepared for this episode, without a doubt Raphtalia lived a hell thanks to the disgusting bastard of Idol.

Idol finally recognizes Raphtalia and the miserable one justifies why he bought all the children of the town and the worst thing is that the scumbag continues to beg for mercy to Raphtalia.
I could see that Raphtalia would cut off Idol's head, but Naofumi makes her come to her senses and finally Raphtalia does not kill him, so she does not feel like that miserable and cowardly scumbag slave of the church of the three bastards. Idol in a cowardly attempt attacks Raphtalia, but she stabs him with the magic sword and before being able to continue the ball of butter slips with his whip and falls through the window, a very pathetic way to be defeated, I do not think he has died, someone that fat can hold a fall like that (I think?).
The part where Raphtalia decides to enter the basement where she was beaten and enslaved by Idol was very hard to see, especially because of the flashbacks where we see Raphtalia after surviving the wave of the calamity that ended the life of her parents, the Little Raphtalia was strong and raised the morale of the survivors, but the hope don't last thanks to the scum of the soldiers of Melromark who took the children as prisoners and turned them slaves.
Naofumi looks disgusted at the thought of the atrocious and cruel events that happened in the basement where Raphtalia was, the worst is that after we see the flashback of how the coward of Idol punishes Raphtalia who gives no cry of pain, but then the damned bastard retaliated with Rifana and we see her suffer with the cruel punishment of the buttery Idol. Poor Raphtalia did everything she could to physically and mentally take care of Rifana until the day came when Raphtalia was sold and separated from her friend.
In the basement there were still demihumans children alive and among them Keel a friend of Raphtalia was in there, but the boy does not recognize her and she mentions several events of when they lived in the village. Keel finally convinces himself that the beautiful girl in front of him is the Raphtalia he knew and Naofumi heals him, but Keel mentions Rifana, but we see his face very hurt and Raphtalia goes to the cell where her friend was, but When she arrives she finds Rifana's corpse, I swear that I cried when hearing Raphtalia's lament and we see how Melty feels repulsed to learn that these atrocities happen in Melromark. It hurt me to hear how weak and hurt Raphtalia felt, the helplessness of not having arrived on time and I still find it hard to believe that she regrets what happened with the scumbag of Idol, but Naofumi reminds her how important she is to him and that without her presence and help, he would not be what he is now.
The last meeting of Raphtalia with Rifana was very moving, obviously I could not help but cry, now Rifana can rest in peace after her life in the hell of Idol.
I knew that the scumbag of Idol had not died, his body fat cushioned his fall and now the bastard released an ancient dinosaur that was sealed by the heroes of the past, but no doubt he felt the harsh punishment he deserved, he was crushed as the insect that he always was (I could not help repeating several times the part in which Idol is crushed, it was satisfactory, now Mal-Bitch is next in line of punishment, I hope), definitely the followers of the church of the three scumbags always use cowardly methods to defeat their enemies.

Definately now Raphtalia needs to be protected at all costs, so that she does not cry again as she did in this episode, it still saddens me to remember her lament when she finds Rifana's corpse. The next episode is called "the kingdom of the Filolial", that gives me to understand that the imposing dinosaur will not be a match for Naofumi and the girls, but I'm curious to know what will be in this place where there will obviously be more specimens like Filo.
