Well, I've watched all the pre-war shorts I could find on the internet including those that are allegedly the oldest pieces of japanese animation still available, like Katsudou Shashin. So that should answer the question.

Kanashimi no Belladonna. More levels of reading in an infinite, extremely visionary mixture of styles, techniques and references even in the choice of splendid music. An amazing film that flies high and becomes art.

I recommend Cleopatra and Seny Ichiya Monogatari if you liked Belladonna. They were part of a 'trilogy' of sorts and they're all great pieces of art in my opinion.
I probably regret this post by now.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It's from 1988, but its music and artstyle haven't got old, IMO.

Ashita no Joe (1st season is from 1970), I scored it 8/10 and the second season was even better. I've also seen one more anime from 70s - Akage no Anne (1979), which also got an 8/10 from me. It had beautiful background art, I loved it. I'll also be watching Captain Herlock soon and there are also some 70s movies I want to watch, like Kanashimi no Belladonna or Chirin no Suzu.

@Skana https://myanimelist.net/anime/3038/Senya_Ichiya_Monogatari?q=Senya%20i

OT: Kanashimi no Belladonna for movies, Fist of the North Star for series.
Summertime days, passing gently
Sunlight, leading to an encounter;
Dreams that don't want to end
Continue onwards toward the next day
While she waits in the air.

I added Cleopatra on my PTW, but could you provide the link of the other? I can't find it, for some reason.

Sorry I made a typo and missed one letter. I see you already got the link, but for the record they are also in the 'related anime' section of each other :>

Imo 1001 Nights has the greatest artwork/visuals of the 3, Cleopatra has the best plot and references and Belladonna is in the middle.
I probably regret this post by now.

The original Gundam from '79. I liked the first episode but the longer it runs the more it sets into a formula that I don't really care for. I've also seen some Rose of Versailles from the same year.

Katsudou shashin. It is technically oldest anime in existance

Musekinin Kanchou Taylor (1993). Honestly I don't really enjoy old anime, indeed the only "old" anime I watched are that one, NGE, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and GTO. But they aren't that old.

I watched everything that is available online from Japanese animation until 1970. Took months. The oldest is simply the oldest that there is. There is nothing especially amazing about it, shit like Silly Symphonies from Disney are much older than the oldest classics and still survived the test of time.

Namakura Gatana (1917)

Someone may say it's not an anime, but I've also watched other Japanese animation from 1920s to 1960s, and I believe it's not really possible to pin down just at which year Japanese cartoon suddenly became the "anime" as we know it. There were only gradual changes.

My very oldest anime is Katsudou Shashin which is from some time before 1910, however it wasn't "published" until 2005 so Gatana might be the one that was released the longest ago.

As for TV series Kimba the White Lion from 1965 is the oldest one I've seen. Kimba was alright and has better animation than some newer anime, but the writing wasn't that great (why would a lion be vegetarian?) and it felt like it had way too much filler.

Mine's probably Dragon Ball (1986).

I still have fond memories of Dragon Ball and it's successors, but I'm a lot more cynical about them now-a-days. Mainly because I've come to realize a lot of the flaws I was too immature to notice at the time I completed Dragon Ball and Z. The shows are absolutely nostalgic, but far from masterpieces. Truly revolutionary, but far from the best this medium can offer.

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z imo can't be considered masterpieces because they have so many flaws, however there is no doubt that they are timeless classics. A big part of enjoying DB series is recognizing the flaws. I can still come back to DB/Z and enjoy it as much as I did the first time watching it.

Oldest anime that I have seen was Mogura no Adventure from 1958, though it's pretty short, so there is not much to say. But it was interesting to see how animation developed since then.

Oldest proper anime that I have seen is likely LoGH from 1988, and that's one of the best shows that I have seen, so it certainly held out well.

From what I remember, the oldest TV anime I've watched was Chou Denji Machine Voltes V, from 1977. This anime became popular in my country especially for people at my age.

But for oldest anime ever made, Katsudou Shashin was the oldest I've watched. It's over before it even started, so don't blink if you're going to check this out. :'D
