Why is this marked as a sequel to R2?

This shouldn't be a sequel to R2 since this is a sequel to the movie trilogy (which changed a lot of things). If anyone were to jump from R2 to this, they would be pretty damn confused. This movie is not in the same canon as R1 and R2 and should be marked under ''Alternative version'', ''Spin-off'' or ''Other''.

I think it's because Fukkatsu is considered an alternative version to R2. But since there aren't that many changes from the movies I don't think it really matters. You can understand Fukkatsu fine having watched either R2 or Handou.

Well Shirley is the main thing. Imagine someone watching R2, crying their eyes out at her death scene, then moving on to R3 and she is just there with no explanation at all. Retconing a major character death is enough of a reason to put the recap movies and this into their own separate continuity. Im just saying that it is weird that this is marked as a sequel to R2 while something like Steins;gate 0 is marked as a sequel to an Alternative version episode. Even though SG0 isn't an alternative version and literally happened inside the first season.

this movie can be treated as an alternative timeline where Lelouch is confirmed dead and Shirley is alive
the original timeline the end of the TV anime is left vague or it has more hints that Lelouch is alive there

Agreed, the anime and movie timelines should be considered as separate things.

yep MAL should put this movie and the latest movie trilogy related to this under alternative setting

This movie was never marketed as a sequel to R2, they made it clear many times that this was a sequel to the recap movies.

you got to wonder why there are 2 timelines of Code Geass now though, the first timeline which is the TV series and the second timeline which is this movie series, and those who watch both versions of code geass says there is no big difference so there should be no point on making another timeline in the first place

so i say they just want to make the TV series finale as vague as possible and left the fans wonder of those hints of Lelouch being alive while they made this movie series with a new timeline where Lelouch is totally confirmed dead

It's simple. They wanted to milk more money out of the Code Geass franchise. That's all.
