I'm gonna have to go with anime considering how many anime avatars I see around the internet.

definitely cartoons. compare any subreddit members of any anime ever to something like south park. It's not even a debate. Anime is and will always be a very niche thing.

That must be because the main audience of anime shows are not in reddit.

I could say the same in return, who says all the people who watch cartoons even bother about joining the subreddit. It's a bit of a pointless argument on my side to be honest.

Cartoons are just this everyday thing for way more people. It's just that anime fans from my general impression are way more passionate about it. Ask 10.000 random people on the street about Spongebob, and then ask them about Death Note or Naruto. The results should speak for themselves.

Fair point but why don't we ask them about pokemon instead? And according to google trends naruto dwarfs south park.

nah ask 10.000 random people about dbz or pokemon lol I think both of those aired on the same tv channels that showed cartoons so I think anime and cartoons are equally well known it's just that there are way more popular cartoons than anime in the west

Cartoons, cause they are for everyone, and even Japan prefers them. Anime is a niche. Unless you speak of only shonens, that is what most people watch anyway.

It clearly shows what people talk about more on the internet for sure. But that doesn't automatically mean that it resembles actual popularity in the world. If anything this proofs that anime fans are more likely to be active and posting on the internet in comparison to western cartoon related content. It was also kind of obvious that naruto has crazy results because it was one of the most popular shounen series for a good while not only in japan and still is. There is no doubt it's very popular, but that isn't actually saying much for the big picture.

I'm very doubtful that google trends is a good source for an actual comparison. Different age groups play an important role and their general behaviour to consume the media as well. I'm having trouble to find actual viewing figures for different series right now, so if you find a source or good website for that do let me know.

@Esquirtit Those are considered anime by definition, but how many people watch pokemon/dbz and bother watching other anime? I would like to get an accurate percentage of that. It's not very fair to say anime is equally popular based on two series that are more or less westernized. To me they are an awkward hybrid in this discussion if that makes sense.

You're quite annoying, you know. You make a claim saying that cartoons are more popular and when that claim is falsified, you immediately change your route, both with the Reddit one and the later one. Moreover who cares if people consider Pokemon as an anime or a cartoon, as long it is an anime and if it tends to be the more popular one, anime is prevailing in this case.
Anyway, I don't see the point of this thread at all considering how different these 2 things are and how their exposure to the world is so much different

The claim has not been falsified and I'm just genuinely curious, because I've seen this topic a few times but I've never seen solidified proof of either side. The world does not only consist of internet results, you digital dummy.

You call me a digital dummy while you were the first one to actually bring up Reddit, talk about hypocrisy. Anyway, I don't really care about having a fight. So, back to the topic, as I said earlier, the exposure of cartoon and anime is totally different and as much as I love anime, it is obvious that cartoons are more popular. Now again, popular as in the literal meaning and nothing else. It's kinda pointless that we even have this thread tho, since it is beyond all obviousness that cartoons are more popular than anime. It's like more than asking yourself how many people know anime, ask yourself on how many people know cartoons...pretty much it

@Viltas No I understand what you mean and it makes sense, that's why I said there are more popular cartoons than anime so I guess you can say cartoons are indeed more popular.I just think the most popular anime is just as popular as the most popular cartoon

You are ignoring asia but google trends includes it as well. For example doraemon is huge in asia everyone knows what it is but in the west it is nonexistent. Same applies for a lot of other shows. And I doubt outside of US many people watch big 3 cartoons (south park, family guy, simpsons).

Reddit is the most blunt example for traffic to me. It's easily in the top 10 of most used websites on the internet. That is a fact. Whether we like Reddit or not is out of the debate here. So there goes that.

Second of all, you were the first one to point out your emotions in the first place, while I was here having a chat about things civilly. Maybe consider your attitude next time before you just expect someone to treat you with kid gloves? You can certainly talk like an adult, so act like one and give constructive replies when you want to have a constructive discussion.

I really don't mind going back and forth but I was just irritated at your hypocrisy and I shall also admit that I was at the wrong but why not just let it end here

Considering that most people dont really make a distinction between anime and cartoons, its gotta be cartoons. I mean, hell most of the MAL users came to watch anime when they were younger thinking they were watching cartoons at the time.
(which technically isnt wron as RunBunnyRun pointed out) and Western Cartoons are much more known around here. Granted it might be similar for the Asian region, I'm not too familiar with their watching habits :D
rip.

Definitely anime (Japanese cartoons).

Why? Two third of world's population is in Asia. And everyone watches Japanese cartoons in Asia, including the most populous countries like China and India where western cartoons have long depleted from tv channels since the late 2000s.

Heck, most of the kids (including the west) don't even know that pokemon, doraemon, dbz, transformers etc. are japanese cartoons.

Western cartoons are still way more popular in the west though.

That's a fair point. Globally speaking you might be right then and the numbers could indeed be higher. Still, actual TV numbers might give a more insightful impression.
@abaza123 oh and to add to that, actually the cartoons you mentioned are widely pretty popular in a lot of european countries!

I was talking about fanbase. In terms of fanbase south park is small compared to a lot of other anime. And if we're talking about people who actually watched it it's still small. Gundam, dragon ball pokemon one piece(it's pretty huge in China and Japan)
must have more watchers. Everybody in southeast asia watched voltes v a mecha show no one in the west knows. It's still being broadcasted I believe. There are asian countries too! -a westerner.

Something like the simpsons is way more popular, even after all these years, than pretty much all anime.

Not all anime but most. Looney tunes is probably more popular than everything though.

I'd say both anime and cartoons have like a dozen or so variations of shows that have huge international popularity. But as a whole anime generally has a broader more dedicated fanbase.
