Do you prefer pirating anime? or watch legal sites (Crunchyroll, Funmedia, etc)? Which is better and why?

Crunchyroll works alright. FunimationNow is a trash heap with a record-breakingly bad video player.

legal
- limited selection
- show your "emotional support" to the content creators
- no need to worry about viruses, although those are increadibly rare
- some series are available for free with no ads and provided by the anime companies themselves

illegal
- an almost unlimited selection
- at best, you are not showing an "emotional support" through anime - although you may show support through other means. at worse, you are rewarding people who steal from the anime industry.
- this is rare and common sense + precaution should be enough to avoid most cases of infection, but it is still possible to get infected by going to illegal sites.
- please, for the sake of everything anime. if you absolutely must pirate, dont use kiss. that site and service is garbage.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

At the very least you still get a decent selection for free with Crunchyroll, Funimations console app is complete garbage though. If my computer wasn't a dinosaur I'd pirate more honestly.

nah Legal sites aren't worth shit

watch what you want illegally and buy what you love be it DVDs/Blurays/the source material or other merch of the series

and even if you buy something from the company hate on em anyway because they stupid little fucks.
Why does episode 14 commentary of Shakugan no Shana III have to be focused on Funimation saying that dubbing and subbing is hard work and you should pay for it yet subs are out of sync for whole episodes like episode 23 of SNS III, episode 12 or 13 of Hataraku Maou-sama and episode 1 of Shiki despite me paying for them

How could Sentai Filmworks fucked up so badly also when it came to my DVD copy of Zero no Tsukaima F where when you press the play Credit less ED it plays the visuals but the song is from the OP

Streaming in general is pretty awful, but for seasonals most of what you find illegally is rips from crunchyroll anyways so for those I don't mind tracking down a guest pass. Anything else, physical releases and torrents are the only way to go.

Nope, not at all. I leech CR off of a friend and their catalogue is veryyy limited, especially after the partnership with Funi ended

Sure watching it on "illegal" sites increases chances of adware and such, but in turn you get access to most (excluding very old ones) anime out there

That and it's free

Like there was a choice...
Real fansub is almost non-existent anymore. Once the official Internet broadcasters will close due to the lack of money, there will be nowhere to steal shows from. (on the other hand, we might be graced by a new wave of fast and non-expensive disc boxes releases, and THAT would be great)

this day... anime probably pirate will dominate because the legal site is limited...
pirate is unlimited...

here i give you the comparison (the basic one)

if you offered by something or someone a free = you must take the offer
the internet give you this option :

legal site = not free

pirated site = free

I'm sorry mate, it depends on witch country you'r are from.

In sweden Crunchyroll have the same worth as dirt, they got close no stuff uploaded.
I used Crunchyroll for years, beacuse I thought I was supporting the business but after alot of reviews and information have been leacked. Money that Crunchyroll earn goes into shity animes.

And Funimation is nothing we can use outside of the NA.
Well maybe with VPN or something, but why in hell shoud i use a VPN to watch anime. Why not just release it for the world, lol.

Only way I woud start to pay again for anime streaming service is if it they woud release a anime streaming site, that show us that the cash they made got to the studio that made the anime and if they got all of the 15k animes uploaded, movies, special, ovas everything.

Why pay for something and get scammed, crunchyroll got the same worth as dirt in alot of countries.

I used it for years and it was more waste then buying cheap figurens from china.

Pirate streaming sites seem to have better or equal services than them.
Crunchyroll censors anime. They censored the rape scene from SAO 3.
They also produced an SJW pandering "anime" called High Guardian Spice instead of improving their services so there's that.
If you want to support the shows that you like it's better to buy their merch and dvds.

Depends on where you life, their library in the US seems to be pretty decent, and the streams you find on pirate sites are often just taken from Crunchyroll or funimation, so you often get the same stuff.

Most pirate websites are using Crunchy/Funimation subs nowadays. Back in the day we had the fansubs with hella curse words and explanations on abilities and japanese jokes. Wouldn't waste my money with Crunchy or Funi, just buy merch or volumes if you don't want to pay them.

legal streaming sites only have limited stuff too so that’s kinda bad too. but like people in the anime industry work their asses off to produce anime and its just so damn unfair for them when you only pirate anime. buying source material doesnt get the animators money so you’d have to buy the blurays which cost a ton.

Legal, but for the convenience and not the actual legality. Downloading is a pain since takes up too much space, I have to remember when everything comes out, and some are actually tracked (and I don't feel like paying for a VPN anymore). Then you have streaming sites, which are worse than actual shit.

Having Crunchyroll isn't gonna alleviate all of that since not all series are available, but it can at least help. I'd rather pour a tiny bit of money per month and have that convenience, the amount of money a Crunchyroll and/or HiDive subscription costs isn't gonna make rent harder to pay off. Also while it's not great, the manga section is kinda neat. Not that many manga, but some that I liked that had Google translate levels of translation pre-Crunchyroll's release of their own translations.

Seriously though, those illegal streaming sites like KissAnime are ass. They're convenient, but the quality is terrible. Downloads are still the best all around if I wasn't so lazy.

I pirate. Apart for the obvious arguments for it, free, basically unlimited selection, etc. There's the point that many people have made in other topics like this. While sites like Crunchyroll say part of their profits go towards the studios, it comes down to barely anything, and if you really wanted to support the studios, buying official merch is a much better way.

Yeah, most of them are.

I mean Amazon is a bit shitty and Netflix has it's issues but most of the anime centric services are fine and way more convenient for me than pirating.

Nope, they didn't censor it. The version on Crunchyroll is just the version that aired on a different TV channel.

There's a chance there was a decision made to use the less bad version but it would have been Aniplex of America who made that decision, not Crunchyroll, since AOA are the ones who provided the raw. This is further proved by the fact that Funimation got the same version of the episode.

I really gotta say there is nothing that can compare to old fansubs. original Gintama and One Piece fansubs are just like the best things ever (translators and typesetters just sorta did what they want and also explained things i loved it). Legal streaming sites obviously don't have those. Anyways i only pirate if Hulu or Netflix don't have a series. Hulu has a good variety of popular stuff but i can only ever find niche movies and OVA's if i pirate them.

I have to use a mix of both. I watch quite a bit of airing anime and it doesn't all go to one place of course. I don't want to buy 3 different subscriptions so I come to a compromise. I like Crunchyroll a lot so I buy their services. Whatever Crunchyroll doesn't have, I go to KissAnime. KissAnime hasn't done me wrong and I trust their website. I have a pretty good protection software on my computer on top of that so I guess that helps too. I will always give priority to Crunchyroll though as I support them.

Mostly legal watch + buy dvd/bluray + legitimate merchendise for shows I love.
Even if all I watched was 1 episode a month, it is still cheaper to watch anime legally now then when I was a kid.

VRV is my current favorite service. Sucks it is USA only though.

personally, I think they are more worth it now that hidive is there. I have seen a significant amount of what funi had to offer .

Also, they added two more services for American cartoons, boomerang, Nicktoons-and my husband isn’t exactly into anime (he likes some, mostly yaoi and yuri) but he does like american cartoons better. So, it at least made the service more worthwhile for people who don’t like anime so people who do like anime can convince them it is worth it.

I used to have a CR subscription, but I had many issues with what I got for my money.

They never updated their subs and it was only better than nothing and couldn't lick the boots of the better fansub groups.
They never updated their content and stayed the half-baked and censored TV release even long after the BD was out.
I paid the same subscription fee than people in the US and got a fraction of the content. And some stuff didn't show up in their app, only in the browser.
Without subscription they were bloated with ads and it was a pain in the ass to binge watch series.

$30 in 2006: Gets you a DVD with ~4 episodes of a show that aired in approximately 2004.
$30 in 2019: Gets you a month's subscription to Crunchyroll, Funimation, HiDive, Netflix, maybe Hulu as well, with access to hundreds of shows and thousands of episodes, including dozens of new/seasonal shows as they air in Japan.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me...

When did CR publicly release its internal financial data for all the haters to peruse? Companies continue making licensing deals with CR et al because they see positive returns from them. I certainly haven't seen any breach-of-contract lawsuits filed over High Guardian Spice, to say the least.

For Evangelion: Coming Spring 2019 to Netflix.
Yes, legal sites' selection is limited because they have to live in a world of laws and limits, and they don't have infinite money to license everything. Paying for some and pirating others, like the compromise yoman21a mentions, is still better for the industry than just pirating everything. No need to let the perfect become the enemy of the good.

The unfairness is the fault of the freeloaders, not the legal sites. This is also why piracy isn't harmless, and the "they wouldn't have bought it anyway" talking point is bogus -- it creates a sort of ideological inertia, drawing paying customers to pirate (even without the acts of certain anti-industry saboteurs) or discouraging pirates from paying, all on the grounds of "Why should I pay when they're getting it for free?"

But you're apparently fine with letting other people's money control whether you can watch anime or not -- if not for other people spending money, you wouldn't have the option to watch it for free.

Not meeting impossible demands is not equivalent to "scamming" people.
---

For anyone making the "CR isn't worth as much in my country" statement: CR's selection in the US wasn't that big when they first went legal, either. They were able to expand it because people bought in and supported them, making it more viable to license more niche/risky titles and more titles in general. Other countries are just at an earlier point in the development timeline, like the US market was in 2009-10. CR's not going to spend a bunch of money out of the blue on licensing risks in unproven fringe markets. If there really are viable paying audiences in these places, maybe companies that're actually in those countries should pick up the licenses, instead of everyone relying on North American businesses to service the entire globe. "But there are no companies like that in my country"? Then maybe CR actually is the best legal option, meaning that supporting them, despite presently-existing US/local availability disparities, is best path to seeing expanded access to legal anime in your country.

Piracy and merch is the proper way to support anime in the west. These legal (digital) platforms have their own agenda, which is not pro-anime nor pro-fan. It's bad to give them financial support, which is unfortunate.
