I'm seeing so many MAL profiles/accounts that just leave you no hope that they'd ever come back. People that didn't log in for 2,3,4,5 years now.. why is this happening? And, in most of the cases (as far as I know), there're lots of those left here, waiting for them to come back, still hoping, some might have moved on already, but some... Honestly, it is so heartbreaking, beats me...

I'd like to know if there's anyone else going through a similar situation (aka u get to know smb here, talk 24/7, share your most deep thoughts and feelings and one day before u even manage to ask for their discord, they leave for good and up until today, you know nothing about them…) OR (the other side) you were the one that did sth so cruel to smb? I'm curious why'd people treat others this way? Does it feel so good to let a human being in ignorance??? while knowing they care, knowing they're looking for you. How does it feel? Why aren't people more honest about their choices, even if it's online? (and not real life, as some might say).

Thanks in advance.

Waiting for sth that might just never happen, is painful. Just saying.

I'd say one reason is Discord has exploded in popularity.

When I see accounts with a large time away from MAL I get a little sad as well because I genuinely really like this site. I don't speak to that many people on this site so I have never experienced someone just getting up and leaving without notice.

I only recently joined MAL and started using the forums as well after the site went down and because someone added me on Discord looking for someone else during the downtime then we talked about MAL, and they were an active user of the forums. So that convinced me to start posting here as well because it seemed like fun, and I didn't like it all that much at the start but I find it quite fun now. So MAL is still getting new forum users, I have seen quite a few recently as well.

MAL is a different place for different people.
Though there are many who will use the site strictly for its list feature, a few lucky chosen ones will one day decide to post something on the forums. Be it a question about an anime, or a witty post. Fast Forward 1-2 years later they are either long gone or are now MAL forum regulars.

Those who "Leave" MAL are usually those who became regulars. Whether its in forum games, the clubs or the casual discussion forums.

There is a power struggle here of some kind. People want to leave their mark on the forums. Though in the last few years its a solo battle. Gone are the days when 4 or 5 users were associated with each other. Gone are the days when someone @ one of their fellow shitposters to contribute to a pointless thread.

When all the old users and new users are single handedly posting in isolation. It gets boring. They are alone despite posting among 100s of people.

Writing a diary entry would be more entertaining.

People would much rather do something related to their adult life, college life, or social life than post in the void which is MAL.

The younger generation of Anime fans who used to show up everytime an anime hit mainstream are now all on Apps, or other places.( Like Discord, or twitter, Anime Amino)

Why go on a forum club based on your favorite anime when you can make a discord for it!

mal lacks progressive improvement and forums are getting boring thesedays
another reason might be work or school
people get busier perhaps or they do not wish to spend time on an anime website
and rather on something productive or meaningful to reality
or
maybe they just forgot their passwords and too lazy to request password resets

That busy is one explanation and the rest also, even though I don't hope for some suggestions to happen, but there can be also two other possibilities:

1) a general loss in interest (not restricted to Anime and Manga) after having spent so much time with online communities

2) they get to know people more locally to them and/or move to a place where they can meet people who are close to them in their vicinity, thus not needing any online community or online-only contact for socializing

The second one may suck for the online friend or good online acquaintance, but from the position of the local friend or local good acquaintance, they would prefer to spend more time with that person, too, so people tend to make a cut-off point once they get so fulfilled with their local relationships

I know that feel bro. People you regularly talk to for so long and also the ones your care about, some major changes happened in their life, got tight schedules and have to struggle in their daily life that they can't interact with you like they used to anymore. They will even forget about your existence bro. It's all about changes in priorities and emotions. They are like dummies who cling to their basic priorities in the end. So, it would be Orokana of you to be sad over something like that. Just take care of yourself and also get busy with the stuffs that will improve you cuz it's just the way things in life are.

That's certainly a possibility, though Discord is a messenger and people who would have more contact with people they can meet face-to-face, would much rather use something like WhatsApp with their real names, instead. I can very well imagine that once people have found a satisfying social circle with people, with whom they can meet in person, they won't feel as much of a need to socialize with people whom they only know from a pseudonymous, interest-based, social site.

I personally doubt that a site like Facebook or Twitter will stay relevant in most people's lives who at one point created an account of either or both. Reddit might be good to look things up or to ask a question pseudonymously, but other than that, I can't see a majority switch to it, either.

deg said:

This is something I can agree with, though MAL has hold itself fairly well for so long, which could be because of the ease of socializing through profile comments.

This is the most morbid yet true post I've seen in this thread. I completely second this, especially the first half. The reason why people don't associate with MAL anymore is because MAL is a shell of its former self.

Yeah this. It feels like there's no new topics to talk about. You always see the same boring discussions and shitposts here on mal. There's no variety to keep the community here interesting enough to be apart of (tbh mal lacks a sense of community. Feels like it's every man for themselves). The database and user profiles are really nice, but apart from that this website feels stale. It didn't really hit me until mal went down and i found other websites to be on. After mal came back i realised how boring it actually is

If somebody you were really close with just disappear all of a sudden and don't give you an update in advance to let you know if they'll come back or not, it means either they died, OR, they didn't care about you in the first place as much as you thought, or maybe they didn't care about you at all, and only you were the one who actually cared about them. If I were to not log in here even for a few days *not talking about years*, I would tell all of my friends that I won't log in for a while, and let them know what my reason is. And if I won't tell all of my friends, I would at least tell that to the ones that I interact with the most and I'm more close with. It's not nice to vanish all of a sudden and leave all those people wondering where you went.

Huh, the forum isn't so welcoming, from my point of view, and many topics are hard to discuss, in the sense that they have no meaning. Plus people get cold. At least that's what I think. If people were to communicate more with each other on this site, the community would be much larger.

OT: After having checked a couple of profiles from reviews and other parts of the forum, I noticed that there are a number of people who became inactive after having graduated, which I assume based on what is indicated on their join date, last active date, and the description on their profile that says "I am majoring in x and will be graduating on x", or "I will be starting college next month", or something specific I remember from a user: "I have watched enough anime, and will now be focusing on studying Japanese" or something along those lines.

As for me, the only thing that will make me delete my account / leave is when someone I know in real life finds out about this account.
